KITAKYUSHU Vol.47 ‘Government with Character’ - Introducing KitaQ’s Mascot Characters Japan has always had a knack for the kawaii, and has had a “long-standing fixation with all things cute” (The Wall Street Journal, 2012). This trend is most prevalent in the weird and wonderful world of Japan’s mascot characters. Commonly referred to as yuru-kyara (short for yurui, or ‘nonchalant’ characters), in recent times, numerous life-size fluffy mascots have been created to represent local regions and organizations. These characters often take the form of a local specialty or a particular icon that has come to represent the respective region and each has a unique backstory of how it came to be. Their names are usually plays on words that depict what they aim to represent - giving them a greater sense of familiarity to the local people. Yuru-kyara appear at various events organized by the region for promotion purposes and to attract more visitors. Kitakyushu is home to over 50 yuru-kyara and other mascot characters; each with different attributes and missions assigned by the city. Below we introduce you to four of Kitakyushu’s most adored mascot characters and a city employee dressed to impress and promote Kitakyushu’s tourism. -

Most of whatever intellectual growth I was able to achieve during my graduate study was as a direct result of preparing for and participating in his rigorous class sessions. Professor Esperanza Ramirez-Christensen consistently shared with us the heart of a poet and the probing mind of an intellectual of the first order.
