KLEIN: These women, and what they do and what they have done, inspired so many others to succeed: to see things in ourselves, to encourage us to try, to let us know someone needs to be the first to open doors for all the others. In the words of our panelist Kelly Krauskopf, “Being first is all about earning it.” On September 20, 1973, I was in junior high school and everyone was talking about “women’s lib.” And everyone was talking about the big tennis match that was coming that night between our panelist, Billie Jean King, and Bobby Riggs.1 And the boys were teasing the girls—they were confident that Bobby Riggs was going to win.

I want to thank Selina Castro for her endless love and support through the many long and frustrating hours it took to get this project done. I want to finally thank all of the female basketball coaches in the world, defying the odds and inspiring others. iv Abstract This research aimed to clarify the state of women in coaching in the U.S. The findings point at the very low number of women in positions of coaching and leadership at the highest levels of basketball in the United States, which include NCAA Division 1, the NBA and the WNBA.
