The Editor was Doug Holmes, who continued in the role until No. 50, November 1994. To mark No. 100, Doug has written the Guest Editorial which is printed below. The Area Resources Officers receive, catalogue, record and file all incoming items. They provide advice on resources already held, and on desirable additions. In short, they fulfil a very important role within our activities. The current officers, Lucy Toohey and Helen Price, have indicated that they wish to move on to other tasks as from the November Meeting. Two things follow on from this decision ..... 1. we pass on our grateful than to Helen and Lucy for their very considerable contribution during their time in office - very well done & many, many thanks for your attention to the details. 2. we need to find new Resources Officers. Volunteers might contact the Area Administrator on 5562 0388. The next issue of The South ~ Genealogist Number 101, will appear in early February 2000, prior to our meeting on Thursday 10 February. Accordingly, your editor wishes all readers the compliments of the season. May everything work out the way that you would wish, as you enjoy time with family and friends. - Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year Ray Welsford GUEST EDITORIAL Celebrating the 100th Edition A Word from the Original Editor 1 attended my first meeting of the Warrnambool Area of the A.I.G.S. Inc. in October 1989. Six members were present including the Guest Speaker and the holdings of the Area, including the fiche readers, fitted into one steel cabinet. How things have changed. In November 1989 the Area Administrator, Noel Hallam, called a special crisis meeting at the Tourist Information Centre to discuss the future of the Area; do we close up shop or do we go on. Around 30 members turned up at this meeting and a fairly lively discussion took place with lots of suggestions put forward for discussion. Obviously it was decided to continue on as we are still here a decade later Having returned to Warrnambool after some 20 years away and most recently from Wodonga where I had been the foundation secretary of the Wodonga & District Family History Society 1 put forward two suggestions to the meeting 1. That a local membership fee of $ 10.00 per annum be introduced 2. That an Area Newsletter be established Both of these suggestions were adopted by the meeting and here we are with the 100th edition of The South West Genealogist which 1 feel is quite an achievement. Surprisingly there have only been four editors over this ten years, 1 did the first 50 editions followed by Lorraine who did the next 25. Ray Welsford took over and after a year took leave to perform Rotary duties before returning again this year. During Ray's absence Betty Beavis produced the newsletter. The newsletter has been successful due to two special people who over the life of it have kept producing material for inclusion edition after edition. Betty Beavis and Mane Boyce have produced the bulk of the articles and information published and without their support it would be quite difficult for the editors to keep coming up with material to publish. Thanks Betty & Marie: your contribution has been priceless. Over the years other members have also contributed articles and I would like to think them also for their support; without it we wouldn't have a newsletter. Finally on behalf of the Area I would like to thank Pat Baulch and Marjorie McLean who each month photocopy, assemble and mail out the newsletter. [Victoria Government Gazette No. G42 25 October 1989 p. 2741] Statement of Significance: St Albans Homestead at Whittington, a single storey 30-roomed brick mansion, was erected in 1873 for the noted race horse breeder and trainer James Wilson. The Melbourne architect James T Conlan designed the extensive homestead in the fashionable polychromatic mode with an elaborate cast iron verandah by Geelong foundry men Humble & Co. There were additions to the homestead in 1875 designed by Conlan and, in 1878, alterations and additions designed by Conlan and Salway. The homestead was identified as a significant building in the Geelong Regional Commission Study and has been recorded by the National Trust. The integrity of the property is high. St Albans has both historical and architectural significance for the following reasons: 1 (1) it is a most distinctive work of the architect JT Conlan. (2) it is of significance as one of the leading horse racing studs in Australia in the late 19th century. (3) many Melbourne cup runners were trained on the St Albans track. The legendary Phar Lap stayed briefly at St Albans stud in 1930 on the eve of his celebrated Melbourne Cup victory.

  • Aboriginal Stars of the Pigskin
Aboriginal stars of the pigskin John Maynard I wrote this article in early 1996 during my term as the Aboriginal History Stanner Fel low, Australian National University. I wanted to impress that although much had been written about the participation of Aboriginal sportsmen and women, particularly in boxing, football and athletics, there had been little researched or written regarding their involvement with horse-racing. This article is the result of research during that period. Sadly the depth of my research was restricted by the limit of my stay of only four months and that I was also researching the awakening Aboriginal political movement of the 1920s. In mid 1998 I received a grant from the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies to enable me to encompass a far more exhaustive study on the aspect of Aboriginal involvement with the 'Sport of Kings'. My present project has allowed me the financial time and freedom to explore all of the avenues of research I could not encompass during my time as the Stanner Fellow. The project, as with the original article, was conceived with the idea of publishing another important missing chapter of Australian Aboriginal history: detailing the instance of Aborigines' horsemanship since colonisation before exploring their subse quent introduction to horseracing. An important aspect of this present study will be the dispelling of long held myths and misconception that there has only been minimal Abo riginal involvement with horseracing. Many journalists, sports writers, historians and academics have in the past failed to observe significant and continued Aboriginal asso ciation with horseracing.
