- 38 - EQUINE WELFARE

A focus on the welfare of thoroughbreds before, during and after racing is a priority for the Victoria Racing Club and the Victorian racing industry.

The Club works closely with all sectors of the industry, as there is a clear need to continue the increased focus into horse safety and welfare.

The VRC is confident that those involved in racing at Flemington hold the welfare of horses as paramount and works closely with the racing industry body, Racing Victoria, to understand and address these areas.

Equine welfare is one of the Club’s main priorities and the VRC is currently looking at ways to optimise facilities on course for horses to train, race and recover.

Racing Victoria and the racing industry as a whole are committed to the welfare of horses and have a long term strategic plan which includes ongoing consultation with industry stakeholders and animal care and protection groups.

Equine Welfare Facts:

• The Victorian thoroughbred racing industry continues to lead the way in equine welfare with $350 million spent annually on the training, care and welfare of racehorses in Victoria. This equates to more than $40,000 per horse per annum. • Victoria’s raceday fatality rate is among the lowest in world racing with a safety record of 99.95%. • Around $11.25 million is spent by Racing Victoria on integrity and official veterinary services annually. This includes related veterinary services to support horses during racing via injury prevention and raceday assistance. • Racing Victoria’s Off The Track program promotes thoroughbred horses to the equestrian and pleasure industries, and helps facilitate their placement in post-racing careers. The Off The Track program has sponsored over 700 equestrian events featuring more than 15,000 retired racehorses. It also promotes a network of 50 retrainers to assist in the transition of a horse to a life after racing. • After racing, 90% of horses retiring enter equestrian, pleasure or breeding sectors. Cup-winning trainer (Rekindling) at 24 years of age. THE CUP JOCKEYS: Two jockeys – Bobby Lewis and Harry White share the riding record in the Cup. Both rode four winners of the race. Lewis won on The Victory (1902), Patrobas (1915), Artilleryman (1919) and Trivalve (1927). White’s winners were Think Big (1974-75), Arwon (1978) and Hyperno (1979). Remarkably, White rode his four winners within a five-year period, while there were 25 years between Lewis’s first winner and his last. Present day jockeys Glen Boss, thanks to his three consecutive victories on Makybe Diva (2003, 2004 & 2005), , with wins in 1995, 2002 and 2013, and Kerrin McEvoy with wins aboard (2000), Almandin (2016) and Cross Counter (2019) are hot on their heels.

FIRST FEMALE JOCKEY TO WIN MELBOURNE CUP: became the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup when she rode outside chance Prince of Penzance to victory in 2015. She was the fourth woman to ride in the race.

THE CUP OWNERS: In 2016, Lloyd Williams became the most successful owner of Melbourne Cup horses, after Almandin delivered him a record fifth Melbourne Cup win. He was again successful in 2017 with Rekindling securing him his sixth Cup.

- 48 - 2019 MYER FASHIONS ON THE FIELD AMBASSADOR

Seasoned racegoer Crystal Kimber is no stranger to Myer Fashions on the Field or the Melbourne Cup Carnival, having entered the competition since she was just 16 years old.

A VRC member, Crystal took home the National title in 2017 in a design recreated from her late grandmother’s vintage skirt.

The win was a dream come true for the Fashions on the Field devotee, who is well-known for creating and styling her own original frocks.

“I have always been passionate about fashion, styling and design and Myer Fashions on the Field has always been my favourite way to showcase this passion,” Crystal said.

“The fact that I get to represent the event as the official ambassador is a dream come true and I’m so honoured.”

As this year’s Myer Fashions on the Field ambassador, Crystal will style herself in Myer clothing, millinery and accessories, showcasing to prospective competitors and racegoers how to dress for this year’s Melbourne Cup Carnival.

“I’m so excited to be choosing my own looks from Myer’s collection. It’s a really unique experience, and bringing this role into a new space is a true privilege.

“Growing up, the Melbourne Cup Carnival was the biggest event on the social calendar. I’m so thrilled to be able to have this role with an event that’s always meant so much to me.”

Myer Fashions on the Field commences on AAMI Victoria Derby Day. For further information please visit Flemington.com.au/MyerFOTF

- 49 - ABOUT THE VRC & FLEMINGTON ABOUT THE VICTORIA RACING CLUB

The Victoria Racing Club (VRC) evolved from two earlier rival clubs, the Victoria Turf Club (1852) and Victoria Jockey Club (1857), which disbanded to create the new club in 1864.

Since its establishment in 1864, the VRC has been instrumental in the development of Australian and Victorian racing.

From 1864 until the end of 2001, the VRC acted as the principal authority responsible for the conduct of racing in Victoria (Racing Victoria Ltd now fulfills that role). In August 2006, the VRC was incorporated to become Victoria Racing Club Limited and is governed by a Board of Directors, elected by the Members of the Club.

The VRC boasts the largest member- based racing club in the world.

As the custodian of Flemington, home to the pinnacle of racing in Australia, the VRC stages world-class raceday experiences at Flemington Racecourse, including the Melbourne Cup Carnival, Australia’s pre-eminent sporting and In 2017, Amanda Elliott was elected the In 2017, first lady of racing Gai cultural event. first ever female Chairman of the VRC.
