Comics Aren’t Just For Fun Anymore: The Practical Use of Comics by TESOL Professionals by David Recine A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in TESOL _________________________________________ Adviser Date _________________________________________ Graduate Committee Member Date _________________________________________ Graduate Committee Member Date University of Wisconsin-River Falls 2013 Comics, in the form of comic strips, comic books, and single panel cartoons are ubiquitous in classroom materials for teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). While comics material is widely accepted as a teaching aid in TESOL, there is relatively little research into why comics are popular as a teaching instrument and how the effectiveness of comics can be maximized in TESOL. This thesis is designed to bridge the gap between conventional wisdom on the use of comics in ESL/EFL instruction and research related to visual aids in learning and language acquisition. The hidden science behind comics use in TESOL is examined to reveal the nature of comics, the psychological impact of the medium on learners, the qualities that make some comics more educational than others, and the most empirically sound ways to use comics in education. The definition of the comics medium itself is explored; characterizations of comics created by TESOL professionals, comic scholars, and psychologists are indexed and analyzed. This definition is followed by a look at the current role of comics in society at large, the teaching community in general, and TESOL specifically. From there, this paper explores the psycholinguistic concepts of construction of meaning and the language faculty.

  • Graphic Novels: Enticing Teenagers Into the Library
School of Media, Culture and Creative Arts Department of Information Studies Graphic Novels: Enticing Teenagers into the Library Clare Snowball This thesis is presented for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy of Curtin University of Technology March 2011 Declaration To the best of my knowledge and belief this thesis contains no material previously published by any other person except where due acknowledgement has been made. This thesis contains no material which has been accepted for the award of any other degree or diploma in any university. Signature: _____________________________ Date: _________________________________ Page i Abstract This thesis investigates the inclusion of graphic novels in library collections and whether the format encourages teenagers to use libraries and read in their free time. Graphic novels are bound paperback or hardcover works in comic-book form and cover the full range of fiction genres, manga (Japanese comics), and also nonfiction. Teenagers are believed to read less in their free time than their younger counterparts. The importance of recreational reading necessitates methods to encourage teenagers to enjoy reading and undertake the pastime. Graphic novels have been discussed as a popular format among teenagers. As with reading, library use among teenagers declines as they age from childhood. The combination of graphic novel collections in school and public libraries may be a solution to both these dilemmas. Teenagers’ views were explored through focus groups to determine their attitudes toward reading, libraries and their use of libraries; their opinions on reading for school, including reading for English classes and gathering information for school assignments; and their liking for different reading materials, including graphic novels.

Golden Age Western Comics Western Golden Age he Wild West has been romanticized in American culture ever since the dime novels capturing the exploits of Jesse James were produced in the years directly Tfollowing the Civil War, and the Western genre continues to enthrall audiences to this day. The stories of frontiersmen, outlaws, cowboys, Indians, prospectors, and marksmen surviving the harshest of environments through wit, skill, and determination, or meeting their end by bullet, noose, or exposure speak to what it means to be American and play an essential part in how we define ourselves as a nation. These mythic stories have been captured and created in almost every popular mass medium of the past century and beyond from tabloids to novels, radio plays, television shows, and movies. Now, powerHouse Books is pleased to present a collection of these uniquely American stories as told through a uniquely American medium…the comic book! Golden Age Western Comics lovingly reproduces in full-color, restored, complete scans of over 40 of the best Western stories created between the years 1948 and 1956. These lavishly illustrated stories of guts and glory, violence and valor, intrigue, romance, and betrayal, on the range and in lawless frontier towns, were created by some of the best artists and writers of the era. The action flies off the page in stories such as “The Tragedy at Massacre Pass,” and “Breakout in Rondo Prison,” from the greatest earliest publishing houses, including: Fawcett, Charlton, Avon, Youthful, and more. • Di Laycock: Graphic Novels
Di Laycock: Graphic Novels GRAPHIC NOVELS: DIFFERENT TEXTS FOR DIFFERENT TIMES IBSC Conference workshop by Di Laycock Since my presentation slides have little text, I’m providing instead the notes to accompany my PowerPoint. In the interests of the environment and weight restrictions on luggage, there are no handouts for this session. Instead, I have a website where I’ve posted links to information and resources on graphic novels. They include articles on the educational value of graphic novels, instructional strategies for using graphic novels, and a Voicethread presentation of mine that is similar to this one. The site is a work in progress, so do come back and visit every now and then. http://sites.google.com/site/bcgraphicnovels/ I’d also recommend that anyone interested in using graphic novels in their classrooms should have a look at: Understanding comics: The invisible art by Scott McCloud (1993), Teaching graphic novels (2010) by Katie Monnin, and The secret origin of good readers by Robyn Hill (Ed). The last title is a free download from the Internet (details from the website above). INTRODUCTION The contemporary communication landscape is indisputably a visual one, and much has been written on the responsibility of educators to address the literacy needs of the young inhabitants of this landscape–those who might best be described as members of the Eye Generation; a generation born and raised on a diet of visual media. To this end, current curriculum documents for English/Language Arts1 in most schools mandate the viewing and representing of image-based texts as a means to develop multiliteracies in students.

  • Introduction to Manga for Librarians
PRESENTS AN INTRODUCTION TO MANGA FOR LIBRARIANS In cooperation with Hello, we’re We’re extremely excited to now have our entire digital book list available to libraries through OverDrive. Kodansha is one of the leading publishers in Japan, and one of the largest in the world. While we are a general publisher, we are also one of the major publishers of Japanese comics, or manga, with a long and distinguished history of releasing some the most popular titles in the world, including such classics as Sailor Moon, Akira, and most recently, Attack on Titan. This brief introduction covers manga titles available from our U.S.-based manga imprint, Kodansha Comics, which publishes selected manga from our broader Japanese list into the English-reading world. While the wide variety of genres (for all audiences) and long, complex storylines of manga can be bewildering for the uninitiated, we hope to break down some basic concepts here. In particular, we hope you take away from here a few key points about manga, and in particular digital manga, if you’re not familiar with them already: MANGA ARE THE KIND OF COMICS YOUNG WOMEN LIKE TO READ. Unlike most Western comics, manga is made for all categories, catering to all audiences, from young children to adults, girls and boys. In particular, manga has exposed the stereotype in North America that girls don’t like comics and are often the preferred type of comics young women like to read. MANGA SPEAKS TO TEENS. That said, teenagers are the core demographic of manga in the West.

In contrast to scholars who situate popular genres outside of political thinking, or conversely read the “messages” of popular and especially children’s literatures homogeneously as ideology, I argue that BD adventures, including Westerns, engaged openly and variously with contemporary geopolitical conflicts. Chapter 1 relates the early popularity of wilderness and desert stories in both the United States and France to shared histories and myths of territorial expansion, colonization, and settlement.
