    Local Government Boundary Commission for England – proposals for West Berkshire Council. Proposed Wards for Tilehurst, Pangbourne and Purley. This response to the Local Government Boundary Commission for England proposals for the restructuring of the wards of West Berkshire Council, is from the West Berkshire Council members for Pangbourne, Purley on Thames and Tilehurst Westwood wards. These are respectively, Pamela Bale, Tim Metcalfe, Rick Jones and Laszlo Zverko. The response is also supported by the members for Tilehurst Birch Copse and Tilehurst Calcot wards. This represents five current wards with 10 members, to be reduced to four wards and eight members in most proposals. The WBC submission to the Commission suggested that Tilehurst comprised three two‐member wards, and that Pangbourne and Purley were combined, also in a two‐member ward (including Sulham & Tidmarsh). The Commission’s own report stated that this arrangement had good electoral quality, but felt that the community boundaries were poor and somewhat arbitrary, even though they are the current Parish boundaries. As a result of this view, the most recent Commission report proposes a radically different division for Purley, Pangbourne, and the central and north areas of Tilehurst. This separates Purley and Pangbourne based upon little community connection, enlarges the central Tilehurst ward area, and because that makes the rest of Tilehurst too small, combines that with Purley. This results in four wards of 1, 3, 2, 2 members. A formal response from WBC most recently suggested that the proposed Tilehurst & Purley Ward be split, though we do not favour that, and commentary in the WBC response should indicate that the case is marginal at best.

When Elizabeth was born on the 21st April 1926 it was assumed that it would be her Uncle David and his family who would succeed to the throne after her grandfather King George V. But it did not work out like that. Her uncle, who became King Edward VIII, abdicated in 1936 before he was crowned and it was her father who was destined to carry on the line of succession. He became King George VI and saw us through the Second World War only to die an early death in 1952. At the time Elizabeth was in Kenya, enjoying a holiday with her husband, Prince Philip, whom she had married in 1948. Elizabeth was proclaimed Queen on February 6th 1952 and flew back to Engl- and. Her coronation took place on 2nd June 1953 and, for many people, it was their first view of television as they crowded around the available sets to watch the proceedings.

Her main claim to fame was as the correspondent for Purley to the local newspapers. She used to write a short piece every week, and someti- mes several times a week, for the Berkshire Mercury and Reading Chronicle. She was the unofficial postmistress and her house, where the Post Office was located, was the gossip centre of the village. So from 1966 to 1984 her reports have provided us with a unique diary of village life. She was born Lucy Honor Gertrude Pennick in Holloway in 1896 - her father Harry Pennick was most interestingly a London City Missionary. Honor used to come to Tilehurst in the early 1930s to visit the family of her then husband-to-be, Percival Baker, whose family were, according to her, well-known in Tilehurst. They often used to go rowing along the Thames and one day, as they rowed their hired boat towards Mapledurham Lock from the Scours Lane boathouse, they came across a huge signpost announcing 'plots of land for sale in Purley'.
