Board of Education, community organizations in Chicago, Newark, and New Orleans, all members of the national Journey for Justice Alliance, file three complaints under Title IV and Title VI of the Civil Rights of 1964 with the Education Opportunities Section of the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division (“DOJ”) and the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (“OCR”). As we commemorate the landmark civil rights victory that struck down the “separate but equal” doctrine and the system of codified racism in our public schools, we respectfully request that you open an investigation of the racially discriminatory school closings that are the subject of these complaints. Journey for Justice is a coalition of grassroots organizations in twenty-one cities across the country. The coalition has come together because, across our communities, education “reformers” and privatizers are targeting neighborhood schools filled with children of color, and leaving behind devastation. By stealth, seizure, and sabotage, these corporate profiteers are closing and privatizing our schools, keeping public education for children of color, not only separate, not only unequal, but increasingly not public at all. -

Notable accomplishments have included introducing school-wide restorative practices to foster a more supportive school environment; collaborating with the deans to produce a comprehensive behavior education program that focuses on restorative, rather than punitive, responses; creating the district’s rst trauma-informed interventionist position; and collaborating on the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support plan for the 2021-2022 school year. She also launched the school’s Culture of Warmth (COW), a campaign to boost an environment of care throughout the building. Ms. Parker began her career as a math teacher at Kenwood Academy in Chicago Public Schools. Other work experience has included serving as a mentor teacher at Northwestern University, associate director of the Teaching Scholars Program at the Golden Apple Foundation, counseling department chair at Kenwood Academy, and assistant principal at Orr Academy High School and King College Prep High School. Chicago River Schools Network Through the CRSN, Friends of the Chicago River helps teachers use the Chicago River as a context for learning and a setting for service. By connecting the curriculum and students to a naturalc resource rightr in theirs backyard, nlearning takes on new relevance and students discover that their actions can make a difference. We support teachers by offering teacher workshops, one-on-one consultations, and equipment for loan, lessons and assistance on field trips. Through our Adopt A River School program, schools can choose to adopt a site along the Chicago River. What I want to get, as you all know, is conversation about music and the Movement. And what I'm going to do—I'm not giving elaborate introductions. I'm going to go around the table and name who's here for the record, for the recorded record. Beyond that, I will depend on each one of you in your first, in this first round of comments to introduce yourselves however you wish. To the extent that I feel it necessary, I will prod you if I feel you've left something out that I think is important, which is one of the prerogatives of the moderator. [Laughs] Other than that, it's pretty loose going around the table—and this will be the order in which we'll also speak—Chuck Neblett, Hollis Watkins, Worth Long, Candie Carawan, Bettie Mae Fikes. I could say things like, from Carbondale, Illinois and Mississippi and Worth Long: Atlanta. Cobb: Durham, North Carolina. Tennessee and Alabama, I'm not gonna do all of that. You all can give whatever geographical description of yourself within the context of discussing the music. What I do want in this first round is, since all of you are important voices in terms of music and culture in the Movement—to talk about how you made your way to the Freedom Singers and freedom singing. -

MLK DAY SYMPOSIUM 2018: RUN TOWARD FEAR SESSION 1 OFFERINGS (IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER) Asian Privilege? Think Again. “Don’t complain—you’re Asian, so you already have it better than others.” How do Asians experience racism in the United States? Are the stereotypes imposed on Asian people really “compliments”? In this workshop, we will analyze specific historical examples of racism towards Asian Americans in the United States, and how history has created a lasting impact on racism towards Asian Americans today. We will discuss how institutionalized racism and internalized racism have altered the lives of Asian Americans, and how the UHS community can address these seemingly small microaggressions and impromptu remarks that are so prevalent in everyday student life. NOTE: this session is open to all, and is not limited to self-identified Asians. Contextualizing the News Through AJ+. Since 2014, AJ+ –Al Jazeera’s primary digital channel– has worked to help viewers contextualize news and information, telling the stories of the powerless in our societies across the globe both in the U.S. and beyond. This workshop will explore how AJ+ tells these stories through the perspective of producer Omar Duwaji, who told the story of his own community in his series, Syrians in America. The session will also illuminate how AJ+ tackles other big stories related to themes of race, identity, xenophobia, and U.S. foreign policy. (Omar Duwaji, Journalist and Digital Media Producer for AJ+) Ending Anti-Muslim Bigotry—Breakout Session with Panelist Madihha Ahussain (Special Counsel for Anti-Muslim Bigotry, Muslim Advocates). This session explores the ways misinformation, media and public and foreign policy in post 9/11 America contribute to negative public perceptions of Muslims at home and abroad. -
The 2014-15 Chicago Area Schweitzer Fellows
The 2014-15 Chicago Area Schweitzer Fellows Harlean Ahuja, Midwestern University, College of Dental Medicine Harlean proposes to initiate "Right from the Start," an interdisciplinary health curriculum for low income elementary school students living in the western suburbs. She will provide interactive workshops to educate children on the importance of making and implementing healthy lifestyle choices and encourage them to actively begin developing healthy lifelong habits. Kelli Bosak, University of Chicago, School of Social Service Administration Kelli plans to work with women in the process of community re-entry or in residential programs affiliated with the Cook County Sheriff Women’s Justice Program. She will lead a weekly yoga and mindfulness group to aid them in their stress reduction, health education, and empowerment. Eddie D. Burks, Loyola University Chicago, Community Counseling Eddie will initiate psycho-education interventions and a support group to assist LGBTQ youth, primarily those who are Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) wards of the state. His program will provide literacy on legal rights pertaining to DCFS LGBT wards of the state, skills to help with positive development of self-esteem and acceptance of sexual orientation, and coping skills to deal with mental health related issues in relation to their sexual orientation. Autumn Burnes, Rush University, Rush Medical College Autumn proposes to teach adult English as a Second Language through the Lincoln United Methodist Church in Pilsen. The classes will emphasize health literacy on topics such as diabetes and hypertension and help connect participants to health resources in the community. Rebecca Charles, Chicago-Kent College of Law and University of Illinois at Chicago, School of Public Health Rebecca will partner with Heartland Health Center to educate immigrant populations on culturally appropriate nutrition interventions for better diabetes control. -
