Otsmann1 1Estonian Marine Institute, University of Tartu, Estonia 2Instititute of Ecology, Tallinn Pedagogical University, Estonia 3Merin Ltd., Estonia Abstract The aim of the paper is to analyze relationships between hydrodynamic and geomorphic processes in a small bay in the West-Estonian Archipelago. The area consists of a Silurian limestone cliff exposed to storm activity, and a dependent accumulative distal spit consisting of gravel and pebble. Changes in shoreline position have been investigated on the basis of large-scale maps, aerial photographs, topographic surveys and field measurements using GPS. Waves and currents were investigated using a Recording Doppler Current Profiler RDCP-600 deployed into Küdema Bay in June 2004 and the rough hydrodynamic situation was simulated using hydrodynamic and wave models. The main hydrodynamic patterns were revealed and their dependences on different meteorological scenarios were analyzed. It was found that due to exposure to prevailing winds (and waves induced by the longest possible fetch for the location), the spit elongates with an average rate of 14 m/year. Major changes take place during storms. Vitalization of shore processes is anticipated due to ongoing changes in the regional wind climate above the Baltic Sea. The deceptive Del Monte Golf Course — the oldest continuously operating course in the West — earns its place in the sun. T IS AN IMMACULATELY CONDITIONED, CLASSIC LAYOUT WHOSE TRADITION OF CHAMPIONSHIP GOLF PREDATES NEARBY PEBBLE BEACH GOLF LINKS BY MORE THAN TWO DECADES; I AND YET EL ONTE OLF OURSE RICH IN LORE AND D M G C — STEEPED IN HERITAGE — RECEIVES ONLY A FRACTION OF THE ATTENTION GIVEN ITS MORE CELEBRATED NEIGHBORS. But that happens when you reside in the same neighborhood as some of the greatest seaside layouts in the country, in a locale commonly referred to as the Golf Capital of the World. Del Monte is inconspicuous even in its own family, which includes its younger sister courses at Pebble Beach Resorts — Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill, and Spanish Bay — all within the guarded gates of Del Monte Forest, each a quick turn off the famous 17-Mile Drive. Del Monte sits alone a few miles away, hidden to those zooming by on Highway 1 a few hundred yards from the opening hole. Still, a close look at Del Monte reveals a timeless design that more than holds its own. Stands of tall Monterey pine and oak trees line the 6,357 yards of rolling fairways and smooth greens.And although it has nary a drop of water and only one forced carry on the course, well-placed bunkers (both fairway and greenside) and small, undulating putting surfaces make the layout more vexing than it looks on paper.

Yadon Curator Museum of Natural History Forest and Central Avenues Pacific Grove, California 93950 Dear Mr. Yadon: I was most pleased to learn by a copy of Dr. John Hussey's letter to you of August 1 that something is being done to interpret the Point Pinos lighthouse. From Dr. Hussey's letter, I gather that what you need primarily at present is some idea of source material on the lighthouse. The main source of information on lighthouses is the National Archives, for here are the records, letters, journals, reports, etc. that concern this country's aids to navigation. Because of a fire in the Commerce Department in the 1920's many lighthouse records were destroyed or badly damaged; consequently, it is impossible to say what exists without actually going into the records and seeing what is there. For some lighthouses there is a copious quantity of information, for others the information is skimpy. The first material one should examine in the lighthouse records in the Archives is the Site File and the Clipping File for the individual lighthouse in which one is interested. The information in these files is not extensive, but it is basic. It can be xeroxed easily and at a small cost. Sometimes drawings exist and these can be photostated. If you have not already written to the National Archives, let me suggest that you hold off.

We open with an article by JC Miller about Robert Royston’s final project, the Harris garden in Palm Springs, which he worked on personally and continues to develop with the owners. A forthcoming LALH book on Royston by Miller and Reuben M. Rainey, the fourth volume in our Masters of Modern Landscape Design series, will be released early next year at Modernism Week in Palm Springs. Both article and book feature new photographs by the stellar landscape photographer Millicent Harvey. Next up, Kenneth I. Helphand explores Lawrence Halprin’s extraordinary drawings and their role in his de- sign process. “I find that I think most effectively graphically,” Halprin explained, and Helphand’s look at Halprin’s prolific notebook sketches and drawings vividly illuminates the creative symbiosis that led to the built works. The California theme continues with an introduction to Paul Thiene, the German-born landscape architect who super- vised the landscape development of the 1915 Panama-California Exposition in San Diego and went on to establish a thriving practice in the Southland. Next, the renowned architect Marc Appleton writes about his own Santa Barbara garden, Villa Corbeau, inspired—as were so many of Thiene’s designs—by Italy. The influence of Italy was also major in the career of Lockwood de Forest Jr. Here, Ann de Forest remembers her grandparents and their Santa Barbara home as the family archives, recently donated by LALH, are moved to the Architecture & Design Collections at UC Santa Barbara.

The residential areas occupy the largest swath of the built-up portion of cities, and therefore catch the eye of the beholder above all else. Houses, houses, everywhere. Big houses, little houses, apartment houses; sterile new tract houses, picturesque Victorian houses, snug little stucco homes; gargantuan manor houses, houses tucked into leafy hillsides, and clusters of town houses. Such residential zones establish the basic tone of urban life in the metropolis. By looking at residential landscapes around the city, one can begin to capture the character of the place and its people. We can mark out five residential landscapes in the Bay Area. The oldest is the 19th century Victorian townhouse realm. The most extensive is the vast domain of single-family homes in the suburbia of the 20th century. The grandest is the carefully hidden ostentation of the rich in their estates and manor houses. The most telling for the cultural tone of the region is a middle class suburbia of a peculiar sort: the ecotopian middle landscape. The most vital, yet neglected, realms are the hotel and apartment districts, where life spills out on the streets. More than just an assemblage of buildings and styles, the character of these urban realms reflects the occupants and their class origins, the economics and organization of home- building, and larger social purposes and planning.
