E-mail: [email protected] Abstract: The north coast of the São Paulo State, Brazil, presents great bivalve diversity, but knowledge about these organisms, especially species living subtidally, remains scarce. Based on collections made between 2010 and 2012, the present work provides a species list of bivalves inhabiting the intertidal and subtidal zones of the São Sebastião Channel. Altogether, 388 living specimens were collected, belonging to 52 species of 34 genera, grouped in 18 families. -

SUMMARY: The sublittoral megabenthic assemblages of a northwestern Mediterranean coarse sandy beach exploited for the bivalve Callista chione were studied. The spatial and bathymetric variability of its distinctive faunal assemblages was characterised by quantitative sampling performed with a clam dredge. The taxa studied were Mollusca Bivalvia and Gastropoda, Crustacea Decapoda, Echinodermata and Pisces, which accounted for over 99% of the total biomass. Three well- differentiated species assemblages were identified: (1) assemblage MSS (Medium Sand Shallow) in medium sand (D50=0.37 mm) and shallow waters (mean depth =6.5 m), (2) assemblage CSS (Coarse Sand Shallow) in coarse sand (D50=0.62 mm) in shallow waters (mean depth =6.7 m), and (3) assemblage CSD (Coarse Sand Deep) in coarse sand (D50=0.64 mm) in deeper waters (mean depth =16.2 m). Assemblage MSS was characterised by the codominance of the bivalves Mactra stultorum and Acanthocardia tuberculata. C. chione was dominant in both density and biomass in assemblages CSS and CSD. -

The effect of parasite infection on clam (Austrovenus stutchburyi) growth rate and body condition in an environment modified by commercial harvesting Sorrel O’Connell-Milne A thesis submitted for the degree of Masters of Science (Marine Science) University of Otago Dunedin, New Zealand May 2015 iii Abstract Commercial fishing often reduces densities and changes the structure of target populations. Within these target populations, the transmission dynamics of parasites are usually strongly dependent on host densities. Because parasites have direct impacts on their host and also indirect effects on interspecific interactions and ecosystem function, harvest-induced reductions in host density can have wide repercussions. The present research investigates the effect of commercial harvesting on echinostome parasite infection within the Otago clam fishery. Clams (Austrovenus stutchburyi) have been commercially harvested from Blueskin Bay since 1983, and since 2009, experimental harvesting has extended to beds within Otago Harbour. Parasite loads (numbers of echinostome metacercariae per clam) within areas of high fishing pressure were compared to adjacent unharvested areas to assess the effects of harvesting on parasite abundance in clams. At 14 sites within Blueskin Bay and Otago Harbour, a subset of shellfish of varying age and sizes were analysed for parasite load. Unparasitised juvenile clams were also collected and caged in situ over a winter and summer period to monitor spatial and temporal patterns of parasite infection. Finally, the effect of parasite load on the growth rate of clams was monitored both in situ and in a laboratory experiment, in which juvenile clams were infected with varying levels of parasite and mortality, body condition and foot length was quantified. -

Ani Alana Kainamu Murchie Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Kahu ki Whangaroa, Cunningham Clan A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Science, The University of Canterbury 2017 Abstract Estuaries rank among the most anthropogenically impacted aquatic ecosystems on earth. There is a growing consensus on anthropogenic impacts to estuarine and coastal environments, and consequently the ecological, social, and cultural values. The protection of these values is legislated for within the U.S. and Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ). The respective environmental catchment philosophy ‘Mauka Makai’ and ‘Ki Uta Ki Tai’ (lit. inland to sea) of Indigenous Hawaiian and Ngāi Tahu forms the overarching principle of this study. The scientific component of this study measured shellfish population indices, condition index, tissue and sediment contamination which was compared across the landscape development index, physico-chemical gradient and management regimes. Within the socio-cultural component of this study, Indigenous and non-Indigenous local residents, ‘beach-goers’, managers, and scientists were interviewed towards their perception and experience of site and catchment environmental condition, resource abundance and changes, and management effectiveness of these systems. Both the ecological and cultural findings recognised the land as a source of anthropogenic stressors. In Kāne`ohe Bay, Hawai`i, the benthic infaunal shellfish density appears to be more impacted by anthropogenic conditions compared with the surface dwelling Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas. The latter was indicative of environmental condition. Although the shellfish fishery has remained closed since the 1970s, clam densities have continued to decline. -

PHYSIOLOGICAL EFFECTS AND BIOTRANSFORMATION OF PARALYTIC SHELLFISH TOXINS IN NEW ZEALAND MARINE BIVALVES ______________________________________________________________ A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Sciences in the University of Canterbury by Andrea M. Contreras 2010 Abstract Although there are no authenticated records of human illness due to PSP in New Zealand, nationwide phytoplankton and shellfish toxicity monitoring programmes have revealed that the incidence of PSP contamination and the occurrence of the toxic Alexandrium species are more common than previously realised (Mackenzie et al., 2004). A full understanding of the mechanism of uptake, accumulation and toxin dynamics of bivalves feeding on toxic algae is fundamental for improving future regulations in the shellfish toxicity monitoring program across the country. This thesis examines the effects of toxic dinoflagellates and PSP toxins on the physiology and behaviour of bivalve molluscs. This focus arose because these aspects have not been widely studied before in New Zealand. The basic hypothesis tested was that bivalve molluscs differ in their ability to metabolise PSP toxins produced by Alexandrium tamarense and are able to transform toxins and may have special mechanisms to avoid toxin uptake. To test this hypothesis, different physiological/behavioural experiments and quantification of PSP toxins in bivalves tissues were carried out on mussels ( Perna canaliculus ), clams ( Paphies donacina and Dosinia anus ), scallops ( Pecten novaezelandiae ) and oysters ( Ostrea chilensis ) from the South Island of New Zealand. Measurements of clearance rate were used to test the sensitivity of the bivalves to PSP toxins. La mayoría de los pobladores de la zona, viven de su extracción y comercialización. Hasta el momento no se tienen información sobre el desarrollo larval de esta especie, para ser explotado en un futuro cultivo. Por tal motivo, se realizó la inducción al desove de este molusco, utilizando como técnica el choque térmico y descripción de su desarrollo larval. Se obtuvo con éxito el desove después de tres horas de tratamiento térmico y los embriones obtenidos, fueron colocadas y mantenidas en recipientes de 18 L con 15 L de agua de mar filtrada y esterilizadas a 35 UPS y temperatura promedio de 27 ºC, con recambio del 100 % del agua, cada 24 horas. Las larvas se alimentaron con la microalgas Chaetoceros calcitrans, Nannocloropsis sp., y Tretaselmis sp a una concentración de 20.000 cel./ml, de cada una. Thus, to describe possible phenotypic diversity, a total of 90 venerid bivalves (30 specimens for each species) were photographed on their right valves. Canonical variate analysis (CVA), multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), principal component analysis (PCA) and Kruskal-Wallis tests showed significant difference between species based on the Fourier coefficients. This study showed significant variations in the shape of the right external valve of the shell. CVA plot generated show separation of populations examined indicating significant difference between groups. Observed differences in the external shell shapes of different venerid bivalve species were based in the umbo, anterior margin, shell width, length depth and anterior margin depression. Results suggest hypothesized variable factors behind the disparity of the external shell shape which include habitat differences, environment and genotype interactions. Herewith, the use of Elliptic Fourier (EF) analysis proved to be useful in effective quantification of inter-specific variation between species. -

Based on literature records and original samples, we review here the knowledge of the Lebanese marine bivalve biota, tracing its changes during the last 170 yr. The updated checklist of bivalves of Lebanon yielded a total of 114 species (96 native and 18 alien taxa), accounting for ca. 26.5% of the known Mediterranean Bivalvia and thus representing a particularly poor fauna. Analysis of the 21 taxa historically described on Lebanese material only yielded 2 available names. Records of 24 species are new for the Lebanese fauna, and Lioberus ligneus is also a new record for the Mediterranean Sea. Comparisons between molluscan records by past (before 1950) and modern (after 1950) authors revealed temporal variations and qualitative modifications of the Lebanese bivalve fauna, mostly affected by the introduction of Erythraean species. The rate of recording of new alien species (evaluated in decades) revealed later first local arrivals (after 1900) than those observed for other eastern Mediterranean shores, while the peak in records in conjunc- tion with our samplings (1991 to 2010) emphasizes the need for increased field work to monitor their arrival and establishment. -
Surf Clams 1. Introduction
SURF CLAMS SURF CLAMS Surf clam is a generic term used here to cover the following seven species: Deepwater tuatua, Paphies donacina (PDO) Fine (silky) dosinia, Dosinia subrosea (DSU) Frilled venus shell, Bassina yatei (BYA) Large trough shell, Mactra murchisoni (MMI) Ringed dosinia, Dosinia anus (DAN) Triangle shell, Spisula aequilatera (SAE) Trough shell, Mactra discors (MDI) The same FMAs apply to all these species and this introduction will cover issues common to all of these species. All surf clams were introduced into the Quota Management System on 1 April 2004. The fishing year is from 1 April to 31 March and commercial catches are measured in greenweight. There is no minimum legal size (MLS) for surf clams. Surf clams are managed under Schedule 6 of the Fisheries Act 1996. This allows them to be returned to the sea soon after they are taken provided they are likely to survive. 1. INTRODUCTION Commercial surf clam harvesting before 1995–96 was managed using special permits. From 1995–96 to 2002–03 no special permits were issued because of uncertainty about how best to manage these fisheries. New Zealand operates a mandatory shellfish quality assurance programme for all bivalve shellfish grown and harvested in areas for human consumption. Shellfish caught outside this programme can only be sold for bait. This programme is based on international best practice and is managed by the New Zealand Food Safety Authority (NZFSA), in cooperation with the District Health Board Public Health Units and the shellfish industry1. This involves surveying the water catchment area for 1.
