Brevard Live December 2013 - 9 Andrew Marcus Is Alive, Well, And On The Air

by John Leach

n our September 2012 issue we bid farewell Ito local studio owner/songwriter/musician/AV guru Andrew Marcus. After 20 years as a central figure of the Brevard County music scene An- drew packed up the van one last time and took his act to Tennessee. Over the past few months we’ve been receiv- ing lots of cards and letters asking “What ever happened to Andrew Marcus?” - so we tracked him down at the JTV studios in Knoxville, TN, where he took the time to answer a few questions:

Why Tennessee? Andrew: Y’know, I get asked that a lot. The thing about Tennessee is that there’s music in the air. Think about it. Memphis is the birthplace of rock & roll, Nashville is the home of and Knoxville, in the Blue Ridge Mountains, is a major bluegrass city. I first visited Tennessee in 2009 and I knew I had to live here. Driving around Tennessee – the cotton fields, the hills, the moun- tains, the music – it’s like driving around in a Lucinda Williams song! Plus – everywhere you go in this state smells like barbecue! Awesome!

Have you been playing any music? Andrew: I’ve been here just over a year and I’ve written 36 songs. I feel like they’re some of my best songs ever. Since I’m not involved with a band, or playing out, I can write straight from the heart and not worry about things like “Will so & so like this tune? Can so & so handle this part? Can so & so play at this tempo?” I’m finally doing it all for myself and it feels good. Also, maybe even more importantly is, I’ve been able to spend a whole lot of time listening. The mountains have given me fresh ears. There’s great music around every corner here and I’m taking in as much as I can. There’s an impressive scene in Knoxville but I’ve also been spending time in Nashville and Memphis and learning

ver decades Peter White has maintained a reputation as Oone of the most versatile and prolific acoustic guitarists in the world of contemporary jazz. He combines elements of jazz, pop and classical to create a sound that is sin- gular and at the same time accessible to a broad audience. White was born in 1954 in Luton, a small town north of London. As a child, he learned to play several musical in- struments, including the clarinet, trombone, violin and pi- ano. And of course, like so many youngsters growing up during the heyday of and , he gravitated to the guitar. He learned his first chords on an acoustic guitar, then bought his first electric guitar in his early teens and studied the recordings of the reigning guitar gods of the day – , Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page. Then he shifted to- ward the music of acoustic artists like Crosby, Stills and Nash, James Taylor, and Joni Mitchell. Plugged or un- plugged, he had decided by his late teens that music was his calling, and his first professional gig was at a holiday resort in England when he was 19 years old. Barely a year later, he was invited to join Al Stewart’s band as a keyboardist for a tour of England, Scotland, and the U.S. in 1975. In addition to opening for artists like Linda Ronstadt, Billy Joel and Queen, White worked with Stewart in the studio in the making of Year of the Cat, which be- came a huge hit for Stewart in 1976. The tour and the album Featuring marked the beginning of a twenty-year association with Stewart. In that time, the two musicians co-wrote numerous songs, including Stewart’s 1978 hit, “Time Passages.” By the beginning of the ‘80s, White and Stewart had relocated to Los Angeles, formed a band called Shot in the Dark. Around the same time, Peter White’s brother Danny Rick formed a group called Matt Bianco, which included a talent- ed Polish singer named Basia Trzetrzelewska. Danny White Braun and Basia splintered off to launch the singer’s solo career with the 1987 debut album, Time and Tide, which featured Peter White on guitar. & After fifteen years as a backup musician and a session player, White launched his solo recording career with the 1990 release of Reveillez-Vous (French for “Wake up,” a title chosen by White in honor of his French mother). The Mindi album included several unused songs that White had written for Stewart, and it became a favorite among contemporary Abair jazz radio statio. In a career that spans nearly four decades, over a dozen solo recordings and countless performances, White insists that it’s the faces in the crowd and the fans that keep his music going. www.kingcenter.com Photo: Reisig-Taylor

The Eddie Scott Going Home Jam Bringing Down The House he Eddie Scott Going Home Jam was one of the most impressive shows of the year 2013 hosted by soul man Billy Lee who took the lead in an enormous team effort that produced an afternoon ofT incredible music. And let’s be honest: Those black blues and soul legends showed us all how to bring down a house. Over a thousand people visited during the length of the afternoon to show their respect to motown-singer Eddie Scott who passed away a month earlier and to raise money for his funeral expenses. 16 - Brevard Live December 2013

Now it’s time to take the stage. It’s been over a year since the Billy Lee Soul Revue has performed at Lou’s Blues and what a reunion it was. People were so ecstatic to see the guys again especially after such a long hiatus. Once Johnny Mac, Frank Tuckwiller and Tom Luikart fire up those horns the crowd went nuts. They were wailing and nailing those notes to the wall and the people loved it. The rhythm section was cranking and we had Tree Rees drumming for us on loaner from Different Worlds. My keyboardist David Hoag had not experienced the horns yet and I could tell it was a treat for him, too. But of course, the veterans of the band, Dave Clark and Freddy Derwitsch were business as usual. They knew what it took to control such a raging beast as The Soul Revue Orchestra and, baby, it was firing on all pistons and it felt great. We finished up our set and proceeded to get out of the way to let the blues master take over.

What an honor to share the stage with such a legend and master performer/artist like Joey Gilmore. This man began to rock that house like it was nobody’s business. Once he Blues Legend Joey Gilmore took off there was no way anyone could keep still. I mean you couldn’t help but dance. People were dancing in the aisles, in their seats, behind the bar (ssshh, don’t tell Lou) and I think I even saw someone dancing on the ceiling. I tell you what, it was such a great time that was had by all. So I looked up and even more support was there. Chuck Van Riper and his lovely lady were there to do some photogra- phy work and help document the event, Gary the MadHat- ter, Amy Sigafoos, I mean it just doesn’t end. So many mu- sicians and club owners and journalists. The Florida Today was there. The Brevard Music Lover. Way too many to men- tion by name. And right there in the middle of everything was the family of Eddie Scott. His sister, his son Eddie Jr, they were all there. We even auctioned off the red suit Ed- die used to wear from time to time when he performed. Ana Kirby was so amazing with her handling all of the raffle prizes. And there were some great prizes given by so many businesses in the area. With the money made we were able to pay for Eddie’s entire funeral expenses and had a great time in the process.

Then the final act hit the stage. Now I don’t know what happened but if you ask me I think Kenny got his guys to- gether and huddled up. If I were a gambling man I’d put money on it that the talk went a little something like this. All right guys, there has been some real magic presented in there today, so we’ve really got to put on our game face and step up to the plate and knock this one out of the park. And that’s exactly what they did. Different Worlds stepped onto that stage and began to light a fire. They struck out on their first couple of tunes and as if they hadn’t done enough they Joe Davis, formerly from The Drifters

EDDIE SCOTT GOING HOME JAM continued brought in - Ana Kirby, done deal, Say Goodnight, Dick. She commences to adding to the fire. Then low and behold out comes Penny Scott, Eddie’s niece and I thought the roof was going to come off the building. The audience went nuts. She took off in a couple of sultry blues renditions and, as my dad used to say, Good God Almighty! It was a done deal.

But wait, we’re not done yet, or should I say, Kenny Mi- chael is not done yet. Joe Davis, formerly of the Drifters, comes out to put a spell on the room just like what they sing about in the song, “That Old Black Magic Got Me In A Spell”. Yes, spell binding, that’s what it was. And all the while you have Kenny Clarke back there tickling the Ivory like it’s an old lover that he knows, oh, so well and exactly what it takes to get her to respond in only the way he knows how to do. Then you have Kenny Cohen entrancing people with his melodic hypnosis disguised as what we tend to call music, but with him it just goes so much deeper than that, and there are no words to describe it. Then throw into the mix French Fry from the band GT Express and there you have the makings of as called it a “Bitches Brew” that’s guaranteed to make everybody on the set stand up and take notice and want to be involved on some kind of Host of the show/performer Billy Lee with Joey Gilmore level, hell, any kind of level. Just let me be a part of it. And that was what we heard all day long, can I get some? Just a little bit.

What a beautiful way to end such a monumental day that send off our friend Eddie Scott with his due respect. There was good food, good drink, great music and a ton of love on the beach and all of it to say, Good Bye Dear Friend. Eddie Scott, may you rest in peace. Thank you, Heike Clarke, for being such a great inspiration of love and true humanitari- anism. You truly are one of a kind. arah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion are a couple in music Sas well as in life. They were married on October 16th, 1999 and began performing together as an acoustic duo in the fall of 2000. Their music combined Irion’s love of rock and blues with Guthrie’s roots of folk and country. Guthrie is the youngest daughter of folksinger Arlo Guthrie and the granddaughter of Woody Guthrie. As a third generation singer/songwriter Guthrie released her first self- titled album on the family owned and operated Rising Son Records in 2002. As a child she was involved in theater and dance. Her interest in music was sparked when she worked as her father’s road manager on the 1997 Further Festival tour and saw other members of the tour group having fun at late-night hootenannies. She picked up an acoustic guitar and started playing as a way to join in on the fun. “I always wrote poems, so it wasn’t that far off for me to turn that into songs.” Irion also originates from a family of artists. His uncle is author Thomas Steinbeck, his grand-uncle is author John Steinbeck, and his grandmother, Rubilee Knight is a classi- cal violinist. His late grandfather, Fred Knight sang tenor in numerous venues. Irion and Guthrie met through a mutual friend while the two were working together in Los Angeles. Guthrie and Irion have appeared at the Newport Folk Festi- val, the Philadelphia Folk Festival, and Hillside Festival, as well as nationwide theatres, listening rooms, performing art centers, and schools. The Column By Chuck Van Riper

Holidazed VI Dear Santa, Hi, it’s me Chuck. I’ve been good most of the time. All I want for Christmas is:

• Stop all the greedy muthafu#@*rs from taking over the world. Of all the deadly sins, this is the worst one. It leads to wars, killing, murder, stealing, and basically it’s just not nice. Interestingly, it’s the greediest who are ruling our nations right now. They’re also writing the laws which serve their own interest under the guise of keeping us safe or making things better. Why, right here in the U.S. we have the insurance companies writing the insurance laws, the gun lobby writing the gun laws, the pharmaceutical companies writing the drug laws, and the list goes on. Our “representatives” only care about keeping their power, not actually doing their job representing their constituencies. We lose thousands of precious lives a year to useless wars. We have banks who steal all our money! All this because of a hand full of greedy bastards. (They should get coal in their stockings this year!) I think if you can eradicate greed, many of the world problems would go away. • End world hunger. How amazing is it that anyone on the planet should actually have to starve to death with all the natural resources at our disposal. I mean, they can take a satellite picture of a mole on the end of your nose from space, yet they can’t figure out how to get everybody something to eat? To use the popular vernacular, WTF?!? Especially here in the “wealthiest country on the planet”. Is there really any reason for anybody to go hungry? Food prices are regulated by the food industry and the govern- ment subsidy crap. Why does food become so expensive when it is so abundant? (see #1). • Stop the endless wars! The main reason they tell us we need to go to war is to make the world safe for democ- racy. BULL!! As the old hippie saying goes: “Fighting for peace is like screwing for virginity”. Why don’t they tell everybody the truth. For example, the real reason we went to Iraq is because Saddam had taken the dollar off the bas- ket currency market in an attempt to crash the dollar. Had we not invaded and restored the national banks and the dollar, that may have happened. On top of that, the pri- vate corporations in the military industrial complex made

22 - Brevard Live December 2013

gazillions! So again, what was the real reason? (see #1). • Please educate the American people. It seem like, amongst other things, the rest of the world has figures this out: it’s we the people against the powers that be. The whole Arab spring showed that to be true. When are people going to realize that the crap they do, red state, blue state, left or right, income inequality, all these things are used as a smoke screen to keep us divided (we fall). The rest of the world has seen this and taken action as a people to try to better their situations. That’s what we should be doing. If you really knew what was going on in the banking in- dustry, food industry, oil industry, and world affairs, you’d be pissed. Maybe enough to take action. (see November’s article.). Know this — we the people have the means and ways to stop all this. But why won’t that happen? (see #1) • Make everybody be nice to each other just for a day! For one whole day, be kind and considerate to everybody else. Treat everybody how you’d like to be treated. Help somebody out that needs it the most. See how good that feels? For one day, let’s not kill, steal, rape and pillage. For one day, put somebody else’s welfare above your own. One day of peace and love. Maybe it would become a fad. Maybe next year two days, then three, then four... But why won’t that happen? (see #1)

So, that’s all I really want this year, Santa. I know that’s putting a lot on your plate. I understand if you can’t pull this off. So if you find this impossible, I’ll just take the usual: A new X-box, an Asus 723xd5 with 8 gigs of ram and a terabyte hard drive, a carton of cigs, 5 lbs. of Hawai- ian coffee, $5000 in cash, and another Larrivee OMV-5 guitar, this time with a cedar top. Ok, that cool. I’m sure you could make that happen, right? But why won’t that happen?

Thanks, Santa. Merry Christmas. Love, Chuck

5 QUESTIONS with professional drummer Fernando Medina

By Steve Keller f you are a local musician in the area, chances are you’ve Iseen drummer Fernando Medina online. In addition to his numerous performance video postings on Facebook, he has a habit of magically appearing next to people at The Original Music Series (true story, lol)...

How did you start out playing drums? FM: My older brother inadvertently brought me into the world of drumming when I was 11 or 12, while growing up in Merritt Island (I was born in Washington DC, but lived locally ages 6-18). He began playing and taking lessons be- fore me and I used to sneak on to his drum set just to bang away while trying not to get beat up by him in the process (laughs). At age 14, I started formal lessons with the always fantastic local drummer, Randy Crouch. A year later I added all the high school music classes and ensembles I could. Then while at Boston University, I toured with the snare line of the Boston Crusaders Drum & Bugle Corps. All of these experiences made up my formative period.

What brought you back to Brevard? FM: For many, many years I was based in Boston and later in Chicago. While gigging live and in the studio in those areas, I would occasionally go on long national and inter- national tours and residencies in the US, UK, Europe, Latin any of the above is considering Brevard’s demographics. Matt’s 5th Aniversary Party Rocking The Casbah With Dean Martin, Elvis & Marilyn

t is no secret any longer that Matt’s Casbah is a rock Istar among culinary establishments, and the many guests who showed up to the anniversary party expected nothing but the best. No disappointment here - scallops, tuna, sushi, a whole roasted pig, also a whole alligator with the tail in his mouth (!?), gumbo, chicken, a room full of desserts. Foodies were in heaven! The surprise of the evening was the entertainment orchestrated by Joe Calautti, one of Brevard’s finest and most diversed musicians. Local performers Ana, Alfi and Joe Calautti took the stage impersonating Elvis Pre- sley, Dean Martin, Neil Diamond and Marilyn Monroe - constantly running back and forth to the restrooms for a change of clothing and wigs. Very soon they had the entire crowd captured and dancing to the old tunes. Heck, I even saw a tear or two in some people’s eyes. Happy Birthday, Matt. Thanks for the great party!

At Kenny D’s In Palm Bay Taste, Toasts & Tributes

by Charlene Hemmle

enny D’s sets the stage for their exciting new Tribute Band Concert Series every SaturdayK night at 9 pm. This month you can immerse yourself in the smooth music of Eric Clapton, the melodic rock of Pink Floyd, Johnny Cash’s country twang or the sentimental sounds of Journey.

Of course, you won’t see Steve Perry or “the man in black” himself but you will get the next best thing, mu- sicians with a passion for performing their tribute show. Close your eyes and the similarity will take you on a tour of the past - whether you’re dreaming about money or dancing with Layla. Open your eyes and you’ll get a new perspective on the music you remember. The recent AC/DC, ZZ Top and Elvis Tribute concerts were a big hit with patrons. Just recently the establish- ment had built a new stage in a new room with a new sound system. At the night of the show the atmosphere was filled with dancing, dining and folks having an all around great time with their family and friends. The Kenny D’s staff has been consistent in their desire to keep the location in Palm Bay an appealing destination for everyone. They regularly have live music and vari- ous entertainment like karaoke, trivia and dance parties, plus, it’s a prime spot for watching football or your fa- vorite game. The food of Kenny D’s is a mix of your favorite casu- al foods like mile high nachos or a juicy burger and fries for only $5.99. They make salads, sandwiches, wings and a “raved about” hand-tossed, brick-oven pizza with San Marzano Tomato Sauce. The authentic Italian cook- ing method and sauce are what set the delicious cheesy pies apart from any other in the area - a must try. If you are looking to get out of the house (and you should), be sure to mark Kenny D’s on your calendar and if you’re not looking to get out, call for delivery. How- ever, the tribute shows are not to be missed, the food is a great bargain and the drinks flow. There is plenty of room for parties, a full liquor bar and comfortable out- side patio seating to enjoy this beautiful weather. Brevard Live December 2013 - 43 Knights After Night

by Charles & Lissa Knight (Text & Photos)

t’s the end of another year and what a fabulous year it’s Ibeen. The Brevard music scene has experienced so much this last year that we felt compelled to recap some of the more momentous events and stories.

Bands come and bands go, with the demise of some of the Space Coast’s more established acts such as Medusa, Open Fire, The Bone Dogs, and Chain Reaction closing their pro- verbial doors, other doors have opened, and like the mythic No more Medusa, but we still have Brenda Phoenix rising from the ashes we have seen the rise of new close communities in the world. The way that the fellow bands such as Rock Candy, Unchained and Unleashed, musicians come together to help one another when the need Angry Magoo, and more. Along with these we have seen arises is an inspiring thing indeed. With the Brevard Live new bands such as Different Worlds, Bittersweet, No Safe Music Awards, The Sam Jam, and the All Star Jam all Word, Blues DeVille, and The Good Ole Boys, make their aiding with the funding for the Brevard Music Aid that way onto the scene keeping things fresh and exciting for all helps our fellow musicians in times of need. There have of us. The past year has had more than its share of moments also been an untold number of fundraisers thrown for art- both happy and sad. With the loss of such notable personali- ists and folks that have fallen upon troubled times that have ties such as David Sigafoos, Anthony (Tony) Fransisco, seen the local musicians and friends step up to help out by and Eddie Scott we have mourned some truly wonderful donating their time and talents. With Funpipe’s John Wilson and the Rock Candy fellas area to play more and more, it is somewhat evident that we are fast becoming known as a destination for gigs. Also this past year it has become the norm to bump into a lot of world famous musicians such as Jack Starr, Paul Chap- man, Chris Risola, to name a few as well as many others who either choose to live here or just come to visit and jam with our talented stable of locals. Just last night Robert Trujillo of was in town and hanging out. This is where we live! And as for original music there are two venues that offer all original music and there is the Original Music Series, currently underway, as well as lot of original bands playing on a more regular basis at various venues throughout the Space Coast. There is something here for everyone. We have seen our first major rock festival with 80’s in the Park in addition to established events, as well as a multitude of bands and acts making Brevard a regular stop on their tours. Just this last year we’ve seen acts like Chicago, YES, Crosby Stills and Nash, Boz Scaggs, REO Speedwagon, Smashing Pumpkins, and many more play at venues throughout the area. Once again we say Brevard is fast becoming a major destination for music and more!

Like every year there were births, passages, divorces and weddings but we’re not going to dwell on that, and move along all the while looking to the future. What’s in store for Brevard next year? Only time will tell, but we’ll say this, “If 2013 is any indicator, 2014 is sure to be an incredible year for all of us!” On behalf of the two of us we want to wish you all a very Merry Christmas, and a fun filled and prosperous New Year!
