THIS WEEK IN CSU HISTORY -- A SALUTE TO 125 YEARS OF CSU FOOTBALL #ALLTIMERAMS - FAN VOTE by John Hirn, CSU Athletics Historian For nine days in June, thousands of Col- orado State football fans voted for their On December 12, 1892, students from the State Agricultural College, also known as Colorado Agricultural College, decided to form their #AllTimeRams squad. first football team. A student by the name F.O. Congdon gathered 18 of the 179 students enrolled in the school, and they decided it was time that CAC should join with other schools in the area to play this increasingly popular game. Players on the ballot played at CSU from Following the Christmas break, they found some men at a small private hybrid college/high school called the Longmont Academy who wanted to challenge the CAC team to play the first game in each school’s history. Fast-forward to August 26, 2017, officially the 125th anniversary of CSU football (CSU’s game in January of 1893 counts towards the 1892 season). The school has grown considerably with an enrollment of 33,413 students and goes by the name Colorado State University. Since 1893, football at CSU has seen its share of ups and downs. During its first 20 years the football program, like many things in college learning, could be described as an experiment. After playing only one game in 1894, the college president banned the game and it disap- peared until he left the school. The football team reformed in 1899, but saw a dismal record of 14 wins and 35 losses with seven men holding QB: Bradlee Van Pelt (2001-03) the position as head coach between 1899 and 1910. Moses Moreno (1995-97) RB: Kapri Bibbs (2013), Cecil Sapp The school’s first coach, William Forbes, died in a tragic accident in June of 1900 and its fourth coach, Matt Rothwell, may have turned in a 5-1 record in 1903, but history shows most of the players were not even students. After George Cassidy, a one-year coach in 1910, left (2000-02) following an 0-5 season, the program finally found the man who would turn the program in the right direction. Steve Bartalo (1983-86), Kevin When Harry W. Hughes arrived in Fort McDougal (1996-99) Collins in 1911, he not only changed the WR: Michael Gallup (2016-17), Rashard game of football, but also how the athletic Higgins (2013-15) department was to be run. Adrian Ross (1994-97) LB: Shaquil Barrett (2011-13), Rick However, as the depression of the 1930s went on and other schools expanded football, Hughes and the school known as Colorado State Crowell (1996-2000), Kevin College of Agriculture and Mechanical Arts, ran the program as it had been 20 years prior. CSC football saw an incredible decline by the late 1930s while other schools expanded and grew their programs. It was not until after WWII that Bob Davis helped re-energize the football McLain (1974-75) program. Cory James (2012-15), Nate Davis took over in 1947 and a year later took his Aggie-Rams to the 1949 Raisin Bowl, just missing conference titles in 1948, 1949 and Kvamme (1995-98), Eric Pauly 1950. Davis brought a style of football to Colorado A&M that attracted NFL-quality players and by 1955 he finally won his only conference (2000-03) championship. Poor funding and a lack of support from the school prompted Davis to step down and although Tuffy Mullison and DB: Ray Jackson (1992-95), Greg did their best to form teams as the school renamed itself to Colorado State University in 1957, they played in outdated facilities and had no funding to support the kind of football other schools supported by the 1960s. The administration soon built both Moby Arena (1966) and Hughes Stadium (1968) allowing the Rams to enter into the WAC, but in many cases CSU football was still 20 years or more behind the times. Arslanian lacked the necessary funds to continue to build his program and by Steve DeLine (1984-86) 1981 CSU suffered through a winless season, the first in NCAA history. P: Jimmie Kaylor (2005-07) The 1980s continued to be a challenging decade, despite producing many fine and talented athletes. It was not until arrived Hayden Hunt (2013-16) in 1989 that a fire was lit and football found a way to get back to bowl games. The 1990 Freedom Bowl team, made up of many athletes RET: Dexter Wynn (2000-03) who played in a 1-10 season in 1988, won the school’s first bowl game in history. Bruce’s tenure in Fort Collins came to an end following the 1992 season, a former CSU assistant coach named Sonny Lubick returned and transformed football into something special once again. CANVAS STADIUM Canvas Stadium is the new name for Colorado State University's 41,000-ca- pacity multipurpose stadium that opened on the school's Fort Collins campus in 2017. The newly re-branded Canvas Credit Union received naming rights to the facility through a $37.7 million partnership agreement announced in April 2018. The agreement, which stands as one of the larg- est collegiate athletic venue naming agreements in history, was part of an ambitious re-branding initiative being undertaken by the previously brand- The agreement with Canvas Credit Union combined with $20 million given ed Public Service Credit Union, under the direction of company President in 2016 to name Sonny Lubick Field brings the total naming rights revenues and CEO Todd Marksberry. at Colorado State to $57 million for the stadium. Campus+ business brokered the agreement as part of its ongoing support for Colorado State University athletics.

The $220 million, 727,000-square-foot stadium proved immensely popular and attractive to fans in its inaugural season of 2017, and drew rave reviews from local and national media, as well national television networks that broadcast Colorado State’s games to large audiences. The Rams set an all- time attendance record with a total of 192,369 fans and a per-game aver- age of 32,062, representing a 16-percent attendance increase from 2016— eighth-highest in all of college football. Season ticket sales also reached an all-time high of 15,477, a 40-percent increase from the 2016 total of 11,054.

The return of CSU football games to campus from Hughes Stadium in 2017 brought the pageantry and celebration of Rams game days back to the heart of the university for the first time in 50 years, providing countless new engagement opportunities for the entire university. The stadium’s design embraces Colorado’s natural beauty, topography and visual connections to the Rocky Mountains from campus and ensures functionality for both game- day and non-game day usage. 16 COLORADO STATE FOOTBALL The Automated ScoreBook Colorado State Overall Defensive Statistics (as of Jan 22, 2018) 2017 STATISTICSAll games - DEFENSIVE Tackles Sacks Pass defense Fumbles blkd # Defensive Leaders gp ua a tot tfl/yds no-yds int-yds brup qbh rcv-yds ff kick saf 55 WATSON, Josh 13 64 45 109 5.0-31 2.0-26 2-3 7 1 1-0 1 . . 11 FOGAL, Jordan 13 47 24 71 1.0-1 . 2-0 4 2 . . . . 8S SCHLAGER, Jake 13 40 22 62 1.5-2 . . 1 3 1-0 . . . 31 MCDONALD, Max 13 27 30 57 5.0-10 1.5-5 . 2 2 1-0 1 . . 43 COLORITO, Evan 13 27 18 45 12.0-51 5.5-36 . . 4 . 2 . . 10 NUTT, JR., Kevin 13 32 11 43 3.0-9 . 2-0 4 . 1-0 . . . 52 THOMAS, Tre 13 23 18 41 2.0-21 1.5-19 1-44 1 2 . . . . 94 THOMPSON, Darnell 13 8 28 36 4.0-11 . . 1 4 . . . . 33 JONES, Emmanuel 12 16 19 35 6.0-21 2.0-13 . . 1 . . . . 7 HICKS, Jamal 8 24 9 33 . . 2-11 . . . 1 . . 14 HAWKINS, Anthony 13 26 7 33 0.5-1 . 3-18 5 . . . . . 15 ROBINSON, Kiel 11 10 21 31 1.5-6 1.0-5 . . 1 . . . . 95 KING, Richard 13 9 21 30 5.0-15 2.5-11 . 1 2 1-0 . . . 17 JOHNSON, Shun 11 24 5 29 1.0-4 . . 9 . . 1 . . 29 SWEET, Justin 13 22 4 26 2.0-5 . . 6 . . . . . 98 HUBBARD, Ellison 13 7 13 20 2.0-16 2.0-16 . . 4 . . . . 91 BUYS, Jakob 13 6 13 19 4.0-19 3.0-17 . . 2 1-0 . . . 5L MOODY, Patrick 8 11 7 18 1.0-1 . . . 2 . . . . 54 JEAN, Arjay 13 7 11 18 4.5-13 2.0-7 . . 4 . 1 . . 92 PAOGOFIE, Livingston 11 8 3 11 1.0-8 1.0-8 . . . . 1 . . 4L ELSENBAST, Patrick 12 6 3 9 ...... 1 . . 99 FOSTER, Colton 8 3 5 8 1.0-1 . . . 1 . . . . 25 CAMPBELL, Darius 13 3 5 8 ...... 53 SMITH, Caleb 9 6 1 7 2.0-12 1.0-11 ...... 23 WILSON, Marcus 12 4 2 6 ...... 97 MCBRIDE, Toby 4 2 3 5 1.0-3 1.0-3 . . 2 . . . . 9S WALKER, Jadon 11 2 3 5 ...... 6 MAY, Darius 8 3 1 4 ...... 26 MAKA, Kavapele 10 2 1 3 ...... 9 JACKSON, Warren 13 3 . 3 ...... 27 SMITH, Trey 82.2 ...... 24 MATTHEWS, Izzy 11 2 . 2 ...... 13 SUTTON, Trey 4 1 1 2 1.0-9 1.0-9 ...... 58 SIEG, Trent 13 . 2 2 ...... 51 MEEKS, Colby 13 . 2 2 ...... 4 GALLUP, Michael 13 2 . 2 ...... 7D SMITH, Anthony 3 1 1 2 ...... 83 DAVIS, Braxton 13 . 2 2 ...... 8 CLARK, Detrich 12 1 1 2 ...... 93 HARKER, Conrad 13 . 1 1 ...... 80 FREISMUTH, John 10 1 . 1 ...... 71 TAYLOR, Jeff 11 1 . 1 ...... 30 FACKRELL, Dalton 13 1 . 1 ...... 22 HAYNES, Houston 4 . 1 1 ......
