The Rice Family SUPPlEIIENT TO THE RICE FAMILY: DESCENDANTS OF DEACON EDMUND RICE, By ANDREW HENSHAW WARD, A. M., 1858 Compiled and printed by the EDMUND RICE (1638) ASSOCIATION, INC. 1967 PREFACE Andrew Henshpw Ward wrote his genealogy on the Rice Family in 1858. Questionnaires had been sent out and much of his material was based on this information. Without his book we would be seriously handicapped in as sembling all the lineages that are now in the Association's hands. Since Ward's time many more persons have become interested in genealogy, vital records have been printed and official and Iegal documents scanned. The data here assembled has come from many sources, family records, bibles, pub I ic records and other genealogies. This is the end result of material that has been sent in to us pertaining to the families that Andrew Ward covered. Many of the records have been checked against others, but, it would be impossible to check everyone that has been received. It should be understood that this is strictly a supplement to Ward's book and does NOT continue the families beyond his book. It lists additional children, births, marriages, deaths, dates and places that Ward did not have. In several instances there are corrections - but they are relatively few. In addition to the supplemental information outlined above, an asterick (*) has been placed on right of the I ine showing that later generations are ready for the new genealogy. Credit must be given for the pioneer work of Mrs. Elsie Hawes Smith, who, while Historian and President, and later as a member of the Committee to work on the new genealogy, did so much work on it. She worked tirelessly up to the time of her terminal illness. To Mary Lovering Holman and to her daughter, Winifred Lovering (Holman) Dodge, in granting us permission to use the records relative to Edmund's family. To Mrs. Mary S. Ball for her financial help with outside typing and to the membership for its help and understanding. The Association is grateful to the late Albert W. Rice of Worcester for con tributing the money necessary for reprinting 500 copies of Ward's book. Sufficient copies of this book are being printed to cover both the original and reprinted editions. This book would not have been possible without the help of my wife, (Wilna Carolyn). She devoted long hours in working upon the records and typing. It has always been our contention that in I isting names in the records that the name of the descendant should be first. In this supplement the Rice De scendant comes first, whether male or female. Subsequent marriages of the descendant are more easily seen as they appear directly below and are not mixed up in the text where they could be overlooked. In this book Ward's numbers have been used. Where additional children fa!{ within a family o small letter hos been used: Example 452a 452b There is one exception to this rule and that is where the children fall oheod of the first one Ward listed. Here the lost number from the previous family is used adding½ Example (140) Zebulon Rke and Susanna Allen 876 Dolly Rice (141) Abigail Rice and Thomas Damon 876 ½Abigail Damon 877 Thomas Damon It is sincerely hoped that means will be found to finish the tssuance of the new genealogy covering the period between where Ward finished, up to the present time. Our records now include a few in the fifteenth generation. Frederick R. Rice, Historian Edmund Rice (1638) Association, Inc.
