Accepted 12 December, 2010 This study explores the construction of adolescent sexuality through a textual analysis of two popular teen television programs broadcast on the CW, “One Tree Hill and Gossip Girl”. A comparative textual analysis suggests that the older program, “One Tree Hill” (first broadcast in 2003) contains fewer portrayals of high-risk sexual activity than the CW’s newer teen program, “Gossip Girl” (first broadcast in 2007). This is consistent with media research that tells us how programs increase the amount of sexual content to attract new audiences. It is unfortunate that storylines are filed with high-risk sexual behavior and harmful stereotypes regarding the role of women in American society. Television holds promise as an outlet to influence teenagers and their decisions concerning sex and more needs to be done to understand the balance of entertainment and education.     ‘BOTTLED WITH LOVE’ Cast Bios BETHANY JOY LENZ (Abbey) – Best known to Hallmark Channel viewers for her starring role in 2018’s “Royal Matchmaker,” Bethany Joy Lenz also served up a memorable performance as a guest star in two episodes of ABC’s hit series “Grey’s Anatomy” last season. In addition, Lenz joined the second season of USA’s much lauded Carlton Cuse series, “Colony” as resistance fighter Morgan with a major recurring arc through the entire season, and in May 2017, she co-stared in the Lionsgate film, Extortion, with Barkhad Abdi and Eion Bailey. In the last few years, Lenz was the female lead opposite JoBeth Williams and Bruce Greenwood in Jerry Bruckheimer’s thriller pilot “Home” for TNT. She also played the title role in E!’s pilot “Songbyrd,” based on the life of multiple Grammy winning songwriter Diane Warren, and she had pivotal arcs on “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” and “Dexter.” From 2002 to 2011, Lenz was the female lead of The CW’s “One Tree Hill,” for which she regularly directed episodes. She was also in rotation as a director on the award-winning web series “Nasty Habits.” An accomplished singer trained by the Director of the Brooklyn College of Opera, Lenz fell in love with musical theatre at a young age. She was raised and trained on Rogers & Hammerstein, Gershwin and Sondheim, but mostly performs acoustic indie-rock and bluegrass when she tours. Her music credits include five indie albums, an extensive tour with Michelle Branch and Gavin DeGraw and a recording contract with Epic Records.

Rhetorical Criticism. Fourth edition. Waveland, 2009. Focus: This course will focus on the medium of television–specifically, television situation comedies. More specifically, we will evaluate and analyze television sitcoms theme songs from the 1960s to the present (with a brief exploration of the 1950s). We will use various methods of rhetorical criticism to help us understand how theme songs deliver powerful, compacted rhetorical statements concerning such cultural aspects as family, race relations, the anti-war movement, women’s liberation, and social and class distinction. Quote: “There is no sense talking about what TV is unless we also look at what TV was, where it came from – and where, in another sense, we’re coming from.” (David Bianculli, Teleliteracy: Taking Television Seriously) Content: The course will consist of class lecture and discussion as well as viewing clips or full-length episodes from the various shows (themes) to be analyzed.     “One Tree Hill”: Birthright and the New Covenant Lisa Gasson “One Tree Hill”: Birthright and the New Covenant Lisa Gasson "We belong here—you ain't never belonged here"- A River Court Player to Lucas Scott “One Tree Hill” is a teen drama created by Mark Schwahn. The show premiered in 2003 on the WB Television Network. It continues, now in its seventh season, on the CW Network. While never a break-out hit show, “One Tree Hill” has a considerable cult fan base, and has recently moved into syndication. The show is rooted in basketball and high school cultures and tells the story of two brothers. As we shall see, the narrative of the Scott brothers elevates the television show from mere teenaged soap opera to popular culture text. The relationship of the brothers, in fact, evokes similar stories of brothers going back to the biblical traditions of Isaac and Ishmael. By treating this television series as a cultural text in dialogue with the theological traditions rooted in the Bible, we can see both text and tradition in a new light. The opening sequence of the pilot episode of “One Tree Hill” sets up the basic premise of the series. Mark Schwahn calls this scene "mirror lives," because it sets up two half-brothers, in their differences and their similarities. The brothers share the same father, but lead very different lives. The scene opens with the iconic shot of series: a solitary figure who dribbles a basketball as he walks swiftly across a bridge at sunset. The scene is punctured with the opening riff of a guitar-driven pop song.
