The affiliation will enhance access to high quality, affordable health care services at MinuteClinic walk-in medical clinics opening inside select CVS/pharmacy stores in Rhode Island beginning later this week. The new Rhode Island clinics, opening this fall and in 2015, will be located in Cranston, East Greenwich, North Smithfield, Providence, Wakefield, Westerly and Woonsocket. The collaboration encourages interaction between Lifespan and MinuteClinic providers to improve coordination and access to care for patients seen at MinuteClinic locations. Toward that end, both organizations will integrate their electronic medical records to further promote exchange of clinical information, with patients’ permission. For those patients who do not have regular access to primary care, MinuteClinic provides assistance in finding a primary care physician. MinuteClinic locations in Rhode Island will be open seven days a week, offering weekday evening hours with no appointment necessary and most health insurance accepted. The clinics will be staffed by nurse practitioners and physician assistants who provide treatment for common family illnesses and administer wellness and prevention services, including health-condition monitoring for patients with chronic diseases.

Five Simple Steps for Removing a Tick from Your Skin By Angela Patterson, Chief Nurse Practitioner Officer, MinuteClinic at CVS If you’re spending time outdoors as a way to get some fresh air while social distancing, or if you have a pet who needs to go outside, it is important to know that ticks are most active in the summer months. While there are actions you can take to prevent ticks, such as avoiding grassy and wooded areas, using insect repellents, and treating your clothing with products containing permethrin, you should always do a body scan and check for ticks after spending time outdoors. Symptoms of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever 1. Grab a pair of fine-tipped sterilized tweezers. – Fever 2. Using the tweezers, grab and pinch the tick’s – Nausea or vomiting head vs its swollen abdomen (do not grab at swollen abdomen of tick). – Stomach or muscle pain – Loss of appetite 3. Pull straight out; do not twist. Nail polish, petroleum jelly or heat will not help you remove – Headache the tick. If the tick breaks in half, remove the mouth-parts with clean tweezers. Each nationally contracted walk-in clinic is staffed with nurse practitioners and/or physician's assistants as well as a physician on call during all hours of operation. Walk-in clinics are designed to treat ailments such as strep throat, pink eye, and seasonal allergies and may also offer a limited list of vaccines such as tetanus, hepatitis and pneumonia. A DSN SPECIAL REPORT n 2012, DSN presented an in-depth report on CVS Caremark’s integrated pharmacy business model — part big retail pharmacy chain, part big PBM, part big retail clinic operator — and the innova- tive products and solutions that were coming out of the organization, particularly where the three parts of Ithe business came together, its “integration sweet spots,” as company executives referred to them.
