  • Out of Sight*
ikramullah Out of Sight* It was an august afternoon. The sun, lodged in a sky washed clean by the rain, stared continuously at the world with its wrathful eyes. By that time, the traffic had died down and the main bazaar of the town of Sultan- pur had become completely deserted. The pitch-black road lying senseless in the middle of the bazaar, soaking wet with perspiration, had taken on an even darker hue. The shopkeepers sat quietly in their shops behind awnings fastened to bamboo poles extending out to the road. What wretch would leave his house in such weather to go shopping? Sitting on the chair inside his shop, Ismail saw his friendís eight- or ten-year-old son Mubashshir pass by under his awning, walking backwards with a satchel around his neck. A smile suddenly appeared on Ismailís face. Kids will be kids, he thought. Feeling bored and alone since he couldnít find anything to interest him, he had devised this private pastime of walking home backwards. Ismail called him over: ìHey Mubashshir, come here!î ìComing Baba Ji,î saying that, the boy climbed the two wooden-plank stairs and stood facing Ismail. His demeanor showed respect and his won- dering eyes were asking, ìWhatís the matter?î ìWhy are you walking backwards? Want to bump into some bicyclist or pedestrian?î ìNo, Baba Ji, Iím careful. Every now and then I turn around to look.î ìDonít act silly. Walk straight up the road, face forward. Do you understand?î The boy said yes, and as he started going down the two steps Ismail asked, ìIs your father back from Lahore yet?î ìNo.

  • From the Caves and Jungles of Hindustan
FROM THE CAVES AND JUNGLES OF HINDOSTAN. TRANSLATED FROM··THE RUSSIAN OF HELENA PETROVNA BLAVATSKY. THE THEOSOPHICAL PUBLISHING SOCIETY, 161, NEW BOND STREET, LONDON, W. [REPRINTED 1908.] Th.1a One 1111 II BUru- ,,..-, TRANSLATOR'S PREFACE. "You must remember," said Mme. Blavatsky, ccthat I never meant this for a scientific work. My letters to the Russian Alessmgcr, under the general title: 'From the Caves and Jungles of Hindostan,' were written in leisure moments, more for amusement than with any serious design. .. Broadly speaking, the facts and incidents are true; but I have freely availed myself of an author's privi lege to group, colour, and dramatize them, whenever this seemed necessary to the full artistic effect; though, as I say, much of the book is exactly true, I would rather claim kindly judgment for it, as a romance of travel, than incur the critical risks that llaunt an avowedly serious \Vork." To this caution of the author's, the translator must add another; these letters, as Mme. Blavatsky saYs, were written in leisure moments, during 1879 and 188o, for the pages of the Russkt" Vyestnik, then edited by l\1. Katkoff. Mme. Blavatsky's manuscript was often incorrect; often obscure. The Russian com positors, though they did their best to render faith fully the Indian names and places, often producecj, through their ignorance of Oriental tongues, fornis which are st:range. and sometimes unrecognizable. iv TRANSI.ATO:R'S PMPACB. The proof-sheets were never corrected by the author, who was then in India; and, in consequence, it has been impossible to restore all the local and personal names to their proper form.

  • Addeybb Is the Champion at Last
SUNDAY, 18 OCTOBER 2020 KAMEKO TO TWEENHILLS IN 2021 ADDEYBB IS THE This year=s G1 2000 Guineas scorer Kameko (Kitten=s CHAMPION AT LAST JoyBSweeter Still {Ire}, by Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire})) will retire to Tweenhills Stud upon conclusion of his 3-year-old campaign this year. In addition to the 2000 Guineas, which he won in race record time, Kameko won last year=s G1 Vertem Futurity Trophy. He was fourth in three consecutive Group 1s this summer before besting older horses in the G2 Joel S. and is set to run in the Breeders= Cup. Sheikh Fahad Al-Thani, chairman of Qatar Racing, said, AMy brothers and I are delighted to own another superstar in Kameko, whose record-breaking 2- and 3-year-old campaigns will live long in our memory. We cannot wait to unveil him to breeders.@ Trainer Andrew Balding added, AKameko is without doubt the best horse I=ve trained. He has all the attributes of a top-class miler and is a striking horse to look at. I feel very honoured to Addeybb and Tom Marquand take the Champion S. | PA Media have had the opportunity to train a horse of such class.@ Cont. p13 By Tom Frary All day long at Ascot, it was a case of deep-ground lovers need only apply and one who certainly fit that category was Addeybb (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) and he duly carried off the feature G1 QIPCO Champion S. Going through the conditions with an ease his rivals could not match, last year=s runner-up finally registered a first top-level success in Britain having annexed the G1 Ranvet S.
