    A SURVEYOF THE WESTERNMESARA PLAIN IN CRETE: PRELIMINARY REPORT OF THE 1984, 1986, AND 1987 FIELD SEASONS (PLATES44-55) ]H[HIS ARTICLE is a preliminary report of the regional archaeological survey project focused on the Western Mesara Plain (the modern eparchies of Pyrgio- tissa and Kainourgio) in southern Crete (Fig. 1; P1.44) during 1984, 1986, and 1987.1 A Greek-American synergasia, the project included archaeologists, geologists, botanists, historians, and ethnographers who each season documented (1) a com- plete history of settlement in the region; (2) the interaction of the local inhabitants with the environment through time; and, ultimately, (3) how these factors affected the establishment and subsequent development of a complex society in the region. Two archaeological teams intensively surveyed 22 square kilometers immediately around Phaistos (Fig. 7). In this paper we discuss the research background and methods of the project; the character and extent of the Western Mesara region; its geology, geomorphology, and changing coastal configuration; the modern veg- etation; the history of settlement from the Neolithic period through the present day; Byzantine through Ottoman historical sources and monuments; and aspects of traditional life in the region. lThis project was supported by grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities (grant #150-2843A), the Institute for Aegean Prehistory, the National Geographic Society (grants 2659-83, 2833-84, 3108/9-85, and 3529/30-87), and generous contributions from Mrs. Mary Chambers and Dr. and Mrs. Harod Conlon. Work took place under a synergasiapermit from the Greek Ministry of Culture to the American School of Classical Studies at Athens in 1984, 1986, and 1987.

Dominguez of the Universidad Autonomia de Madrid sends the following report: RESEARCH PROJECT IN EPIKNEMIDIAN LOKRIS A research team of the Universidad Autonomia de Madrid, in collaboration with the 14th Ephoria of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities of Greece, has carried out a research project with the objective of developing a study of the historical topography of Epiknemidian Lokris, within a more extensive scheme which comprises diverse territories of Central Greece. The territory studied is bounded by Thermopylai on the northwest and Mount Knemis on the southeast, and lies between Mount Kallidromos and the northern end of the Gulf of Euboia. The literary sources do not say much about the history of this territory, and there is not even unanimity concerning the number of states within it. Epigraphy does not provide much useful information either, since there are not many inscriptions from the region.

    EINLEITUNG I. Forschungsstand und Fragestellung Kaum eine andere Region Griechenlands bietet eine solche Dichte an Kirchen mit byzantinischen Fresken wie Kreta. Seine fast 1000 ausgemalten Kirchen repräsentieren etwa die Hälfte des Bestandes von ganz Griechenland (7./15. Jh.).1 Die kretischen Kirchenprogramme datieren vom 10/11.-16. Jh., wobei die große Mehrheit der Kirchen im 14. und 15. Jh. ausgemalt wurde, also in der Zeit der venezianischen Herrschaft (1211/1669). Die Anzahl der Freskenprogramme, die vollständig oder teilweise publiziert sind, ist jedoch ver- schwindend gering. Die veröffentlichten Monographien und Arbeiten zu den kretischen Denkmälern bilden eine immer noch zu geringe Ausgangsbasis für eine repräsentative Kunst- und Kulturgeschichte der Insel. Entsprechend gering ist ihre Wahrnehmung und Berücksichtigung in allgemeinen Darstellungen der Geschichte der byzantinischen Kunst, was wiederum dazu führt, dass die einzigartige Kunst und Kultur der Insel noch nicht die ihr angemessene Wertschätzung gefunden hat. Die vorliegende Arbeit versteht sich in erster Linie als ein Beitrag zur dringend nötigen Grundlagenforschung auf diesem Gebiet. Ihr Hauptanliegen ist die vollständige Publizierung der Kirche der Panagia, datiert durch die Stifterinschrift 1331/2, und der undatierten Kirche des Erzengels Michael. Beide befinden sich in Kakodiki, in der Eparchie Selino des Nomos Chania, im Südwesten Kretas (Karte 1). Beide Kirchen sind nicht nur für sich selbst genommen höchst interessante Einzelmonumente, sondern sie gehören jeweils zu zwei größeren, zeitlich aufeinander folgenden Kirchengruppen mit Werkstattbezug, wodurch sie in ihren Malereien durch gesicherte Vergleiche weitreichende Aussagen zu kunsthistorischen Entwicklungen und kulturhistorischen Hintergründen erschlie- ßen. Der in dieser Arbeit gewählte Blickwinkel nutzt die gute Ausgangslage im Denkmälerbestand, um die beiden Kirchen als Leitmonumente im Spannungsfeld lokaler Werkstattanalyse, regionaler kretischer Bildt- radition und allgemein byzantinischer Kunstentwicklung im 14.
