Joel Mason – 49th Life Member

Joel Mason became a Life Member of the Manly Warringah District Club (MWDCC) on the 20th May 2017, becoming MWDCC’s 49th Life Member in our 139 year history.

Joel joined the Club as a 15 year old playing Green Shield in 1997. He made his 5th grade debut that same season. Over the 20 years of playing with MWDCC, Joel was a top order batsman who accumulated 5,522 runs including 4 centuries and 23 half centuries with a highest score of 150. Joel still plays the occasional game to this present day. Whilst a Premiership escaped Joel, he did play in two Grand Finals and was a part of five Club Championship wins.

Joel’s achievements off the field are equally as impressive. Joel's first role off the field was Club Captain during the 2007/08 season and he quickly showed signs of being a leader. Joel now holds a position on the Executive Board of MWDCC. His roles have included the management of Social Media within the Club where we are now considered the digital leaders amongst the SCA. Joel is also Sponsorship Manager and has done a great job sourcing and servicing the Club’s sponsor partners.

Joel's passion and enthusiasm for the Club is of the highest order and is something that is admired by everyone at MWDCC. Joel is highly respected by not only the playing group, but also those in the wider Manly Warringah Cricket Community.

He is a very worthy recipient of this prestigious award.

Congratulations to Sydney Cricket Club on winning big thank you to Steve Beatty, Scott McLachlan and the 2nd grade competition. They were minor Todd Harper for their work during home matches, premiers by a long way and deserved their victory. from organising drinks to locking up, putting out tea Well done. and chairing umpires meetings – a lot of behind the scenes work which is appreciated by all the players. Overall Manly 2nd Grade had a successful season finishing the regular season in 5th place before being Thank you to all the coaching staff – the best in knocked out in the quarter finals after a hard-fought Sydney. I was very lucky to have two former 1st grade draw with UNSW. This was a big improvement on the skippers in Phil Marks and Shawn Bradstreet to previous season where we finished well back in 12th bounce ideas off and lean on for advice – thank you place and gives the team a good base to build from for all your support. Thank you to David Gardner and next year. Roy Vumbaca for all their help in running fielding drills at training and for helping with the 2nd grade warm It was great to usher in so many 2nd grade debutants ups so often – much appreciated. Thank you to all the this season such as Billy Darcy, Ollie Davies, Josh specialist coaches for their work throughout the Wigney and Ryan Bishop Perrett. Quite a few players season with the players. Lastly, thank you to David who had floated between 2’s and 3’s over the last few Gainsford for his help whilst on the coaching staff in seasons such as Sam Gainsford, Aiden Bariol, Dylan the absence of Shawn for a few weeks and for being Marshall and Jack Edwards cemented their spot in 2’s a great general sounding board for me. and lastly it was fantastic to see players such as Jarrod Rawlings, Joe Graham and Jake Carden all have Thank you to Chairman of selectors Chris Hynes for all outstanding success in 1st grade after starting the his work. A lot of phone calls, emails and year in 2nd grade. Whist winning the premiership is a conversations at training but without him doing such main aim of 2nd grade, it is also important we are a great job the club would not run anywhere near as preparing players for the rigors of 1st grade and their efficiently as what it does. success in the top grade demonstrates we are on the right track. A short note about all the players that played 2nd grade this year. There are many thankyous to make to our amazing volunteers who make my job so much easier and Billy D’Arcy ensure our Saturdays run like a well-oiled machine. This was Billy’s first season of second grade and he Firstly, to our brilliant scorer Gordon Currie – thank acquitted himself very well. 408 runs @ 31 in 2nd you so much for your time and effort in scoring this grade is a solid season. Batting in the toughest year. Your organisation and experience was a big help position in the order Billy had a big start to the season to myself as a 1st year captain and the boys very in 3’s and quickly made his mark in 2’s with back to much enjoyed your company. Also to our big-hearted back centuries – the knock against North Sydney in manager Will Harding – your enthusiasm is infectious particular was in my opinion the best innings in 2’s all and you bring such a positive energy to the group. season. Jarrod is too good for 2nd grade however we were played a huge part in creating our awesome team lucky to have his services on quite a few occasions this spirit – thanks mate. season. Played some excellent knocks and improved his limited over batting immensely – his 70 against Aiden Bariol Wests a perfect example of this. Always puts a big Aiden forced his way into 2nd grade through some price on his wicket and is a guy everyone loves to have massive run scoring early in the season in 3’s and in the team. Poidevin-Gray. We didn’t quite see the best of Aiden with the bat however his knocks against Norths, Logan Weston Wests and the QF against UNSW showed his It was fantastic to have Logan back playing for Manly potential. Behind the stumps he was brilliant with after a stint in the UK. He showed he is a dominant some of his stumpings off Sam Gainsford at a first- 2nd grader with scores of 100*, 99* and 89* class level. Aiden is also constantly thinking about the throughout the season. He didn’t quite hit his straps game behind the stumps and will make a good in 1’s but will no doubt be better for the experience. skipper down the track. Has a great pair of hands and is a tough competitor. Andrew Jamieson Jack Edwards Jamo was a fantastic acquisition for the Manly club I don’t think we have seen the best of Jack at Manly this year. As an experienced captain he was a great help to me also – thanks mate! Tom Kaye Tom was our leading run scorer this season (412) and Dylan Marshall equal leading wicket taker (18) – an outstanding After a slow start to the pre-season Dylan forced his achievement. He has now had two solid seasons with way into 2’s after a few rounds and went on to be our the bat in a row – all that is missing is more big scores equal leading wicket taker (18 wickets @ 22) of 70+ that will catch the eye of selectors. There is no reason he can’t played such a big part in our success this year – I break into 1st grade as a genuine all-rounder in the would love nothing more than to see him have a future. massive pre-season, get himself into shape and push to play 1’s which is where he truly belongs. Sam Gainsford Sam significantly improved his all round game this Matt White season. His bowling developed to the point that he We didn’t see the best of Whitey in 2nd grade this was one of our most consistent wicket takers (15 year as work commitments often prevented him from wickets @ 21) and he now has a 2nd grade 5 wicket training 2 days a week. Congratulations to Northern District for winning the What the stats won’t show is our dropped catches. premiership in such convincing style this season. Our slips cordon dropped catches regularly throughout the season and this cost us dearly in a Manly unfortunately fell a game short of making the number of games. Our bowlers tended to create finals, finishing up in 7th spot. If I was told this after plenty of opportunities but to see them frequently go winning 5 of our first 6 games I would have scoffed but to ground was disappointing and made our task too we made tough work of the remaining nine games, difficult especially when we often did not have a lot of winning just three of them and to be honest they were runs to play with. fairly scrappy, unconvincing wins. Our bowling was good with very few instances where Personnel changes made things tough for us. The the opposition got on top of us. More will be said in opening rounds saw the likes of Aidan Baker, Ross the player reviews below but Ryan Bishop Perret really Trewartha, Luke Edgell, Bill D’Arcy, Aiden Bariol, Ollie stepped up this year and was unlucky to not finish with Davies and Josh Wigney all playing and all in form and better numbers as he had a number of dropped all too good for 3rd grade but a run of injuries and catches. Like last season Ryan finished strongly and he retirements saw big changes and we lost our way should be knocking on 2nd grade’s door soon. somewhat. Our squad included the following players:- A quick glimpse at the batting stats paints the picture for us. Other than the aforementioned players who we Will Wolter didn’t see after Rd 6 we really struggled to find any Will is an aggressive opening bat who often found the consistency throughout our order. If he can temper his game a bit and get used It was great to see some of the young guys make a to staying in for long periods he’ll do even better. deep impression in those early rounds. Aiden Bariol came back a new player. From the first ball that he Sam Webber pumped through the covers he looked a cut above and Sam was unlucky to be dropped from 2nds but he hid it was fantastic to see him score a century v Sutherland any disappointment and got on with it. He played and to make consistent contributions in most of his some useful knocks for us, in particular a gritty, innings. disciplined innings to help us avoid an outright loss v Sydney and in the last game of the year where we Ollie Davies is another youngster who showed a lot of were chasing an improbable finals spot Sam showed class and power. If he can get past the first few balls us a different version of himself in an innings he tended to deliver hard hitting innings. His century displaying aggression, hard hitting and great foot v North Sydney was an exhibition of clean hitting movement. Hope he remembers the hows and whys rarely seen at this level. Jimmy’s technique held a few innings of ours together, more than once going in at #4 and to be one of the last Zac Trewartha wickets to fall in a small team total. He needs to maybe Zac had a season he’d rather forget. Unsure what look to rotate the strike a little more, maybe bring an went wrong for him this year, as he is definitely a extra punch into his stroke play and I’m sure he’ll start much better player than what we saw. Hit the ball well scoring freely at this level. He has excellent hands in Round 1 but after that it was a long season for him but the field and his bowling was accurate and reliable. he stayed upbeat and I hope he reverses his performances next year. Ollie Davies As mentioned above Ollie saw a bit of 3rd grade, Aiden Bariol scoring heavily at times to average 40. Loves batting Started the year prolifically in 3rds and deservedly maybe too much.
