PRESIDENT’S REPORT – by Mal Lay I would like to take this opportunity to thank our club for giving me the responsibility and opportunity of being Club President for season 2008/2009. It has been a very enjoyable experience. Presentation night is an opportunity to recognise and thank those who have worked hard to make Omega a great place to enjoy both on and off the field. Committee: Thank you to our two Vice-Presidents Vinnie Micalizzi and Charlie Yanni for their support and commitment over the year. Jacob Slucki has done a fantastic job at his first year as Treasurer and his contribution to our club in all areas should not be under estimated. We have invested heavily in improving our club this year and thanks to Jac we remain financially strong. Our Club would not function without the amazing hard work and dedication of Tracey Fletcher. Everyone here tonight should take the time to thank Tracey for the unbelievable commitment and effort that Tracey puts into our club. Our Junior Coordinator Chris Ryan has done a fantastic job and due to his hard work our Club’s junior program continues to be the envy of the competition. To our other committee members Steve Cruwys, Graham Wilson, Illya Fridman, Chippa and Clemo, thank you for your support and help with all that is involved in running our Club. Sponsors: Our club is reliant on the generosity and support of our sponsors and I would like to thank the following on behalf of myself and the Omega Cricket Club.

Highett Branch

Chris Wheeler and the team at the Bendigo Bank Highett have made a major contribution to improving our Club and we must make sure that if we have any Banking Business we at least give them the opportunity to present their services. This will go along way in us forming a long lasting relationship. Thank you for you support Chris

This year our juniors received support from Mark Mosely and Declan Kelly from Dreamsafe Mattress Recyclers. Thank you Mark and Declan for your generous support.

Jason Swift and Frank Ruffo continued their support of Omega and we are extremely appreciative of their contribution. Don’t forget to contact Jason or Frank if you need any help in any real estate or property management solutions.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT – by Mal Lay (continued)

A big thanks to Dave McHugh, the McHugh family and LMC for their support of Omega over a number of years. Thank you to all those who contributed to our photo sponsorship and all our Mike Smith Cup sponsors. Thanks to the following: Dizzy Smith on his fantastic effort in making the Mike Smith Cup a huge success. All those who contributed to the Leigh Ryan fund Our Junior Coaches, assistants and parents for their efforts during the year. Tim Malane for all his help and support during the year. John Smith once again does everything he can and took ownership of our Milo program. Greg Fletcher for his help behind the bar. Colleen McGaw and Sharon Lay for the Ladies Day. Bluey for running our Super Saturday raffles Rod Strahan from Jelrod Keith from Steve’s liquor Stewie – room cleaning Thanks to our Chairman of Selectors Rudi and our senior Captains Cruwsy, Vern, Willo, Illya, PT and Rombo for their efforts in getting our sides on the park each week. To our Club Captain/Coach Clint Ferguson – Congratulations on being named CMCA captain of the year and thank you for your efforts in 2008/2009. I’m certain that our club will improve and grow under your leadership and we are hoping that you and your family will continue to enjoy the Great Omega Cricket Club for a long time. Finally I would like to thank all at the club for all your help and support. I believe as a club we are moving in the right direction, however to continue to improve we can not afford to sit on our hands. We have come full circle and not only is it time for some of our younger players to commit more at a playing level, it is also time for those in their late 20s to mid 30s who have been at the club for sometime to step up to off field leadership roles. REMEMBER IF NOTHING CHANGES NOTHING CHANGES. Mal

SENIOR TEAM REPORTS

Longmuir Shield – by Clint Ferguson Season 2008/09 has now come and gone for the Omega 1st eleven. Early in the season, some injuries and player availability issues did not help our cause, however we must move on and focus upon the facts. As the new Captain/Coach, in a new club environment, I would like to thank ALL those players who represented our first eleven this season. Your support for me as a person (new to your club) and a Captain has been most appreciated. I found the season to be an interesting, exciting and enjoyable experience overall. Our win/loss ratio shows we had 3.5 wins this season, but this does not truly reflect how competitive we were and where this young side is heading in the future. The KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) show that we made vast improvements upon the previous 2007/08 season. We bowled more maiden overs. More batsmen scored >30 runs per on more occasions. More bowlers took 3 wickets+ per innings on more occasions and we effected far more run outs/stumpings than the previous season. I never questioned the players’ attitude and their character. Supported by Tim Malane and Tristan Reimers, the lads were fantastic. We were out-played by the opposition in ONLY two games from 11 rounds of cricket (Bentleigh ANA and East Sandringham BC). We had terrific wins against Carnegie South (chasing 180 runs, we slumped to 6/96 but won in the last over of the day), a strong Mackie unit and Hampton Centrals in the last round, however these victories were then off-set by narrow losses to Brighton Union, Elwood and Le Page Park CC (where we lost in the final over of the day needing only one to win). Some solid individual performances should be mentioned: Batting: C Ferguson 111* vs Bentleigh Uniting L McGaw 107 vs Hampton Centrals G Beckett 75 vs Washington Park C Ferguson 68 vs Brighton Union G Beckett 63 vs Hampton Centrals C Ferguson 60 vs Hampton Centrals T Malane 57 vs Elwood C Ferguson 55* vs West Bentleigh Bowling: C Clement 5/47 vs Elwood C Wilkinson 4/18 vs Le Page Park C Clement 4/30 vs East Sandringham BC C Clement 4/41 vs Carnegie South M Klos 4/52 vs Brighton Union M Klos 3/20 vs Mackie Various other players did ‘chip in’ with some good performances throughout the season, but we lacked consistency overall with bat and ball.

SENIOR TEAM REPORTS

Longmuir Shield (continued) We need to focus upon skill development and making the right decisions during crucial moments in a game. This will come with experience and repetition over the pre-season period. Players need to become more accountable for their efforts at training and on match day. Do the basics of the game consistently well over a full day’s play. Not until the tea break – the whole day! The first eleven have a good mix of experience and youth in the side. There will be exciting times ahead for this group. The senior players MUST stand up and show leadership to the emerging young talent (Becks, Sneaky Mitchell, Klossy, Clemo, Alex B and some others in the lower grades). Skills development, sound recruitment and structured training sessions for the Senior eleven should see continued improvement within this group. Finally, I would like to thank all members of Omega CC for their support throughout season 2008/09. Mal Lay, Tracey Fletcher and the Omega CC Committee have been terrific, along with the respective Captains from each grade. To our beloved Chairman of Selectors, Rudi, I sincerely wish to thank you. A difficult role, but you were honest and fair throughout the season. A special mention to Andy Ryan (stats guru) and Bruce Mitchell for their outstanding support at training/match day, and to Tim Malane and Vinnie who showed me their passion and commitment to this Club from the very first pre-season training session back in August 2008. Thanks guys! There is a lot to look forward to in season 2009/2010 for the Omega first eleven.

Woolnough Shield – by Steve Cruwys We didn’t get off to the best of starts, but on a positive side and there were lots of positives to come out of this season. We bought a young guy in for his first game – Chris Nash (the first of many who would play in the 2s this season) straight away he had an impact on the game, we were in a bit of trouble with the bat and Chris, along with another youngster – Nick Martin, put together a very useful partnership to give us a target to bowl to. As it turned out, not quiet enough runs, but the inclusion of a couple of young guys would be the norm for the rest of the season. Another young guy in for another go at the 2s was Rhys Pickles – didn’t have the best of starts, but as the season went on he improved 200% as you will see in the notes below…….. The next few games were good for us, we got another young kid down from the One’s – Alex Bychkov (Keeper/Batsman) who did a fantastic job for us behind the stumps, and coming into the last game before Xmas (Rnd 6) we were travelling well 3-2 and in the four. Win that game and go 4-2 at the break. Unfortunately we just fell short and that seemed to start the rot … I’m not sure what it is but One day games seem to be our Achilles heel. We haven’t won a one-dayer in two seasons, maybe three?, so if I were to pick a turning point in our season it was the four one-dayers in the middle that cost us any chance of playing finals, and believe me we are good enough to be playing finals …

6 Omega Cricket Club (CMCA) 2008/09 Season Review

SENIOR TEAM REPORTS

Woolnough Shield (continued) We didn’t play another two-day game until round 10. We played Kingston Heath who went on to take out the premiership in Woolnough. We made 7-285 against the top side showing we are good enough. We were lucky to have Leon McGaw back with us and I’m glad we did. I got to see a great fighting 120 odd that not only put his season back on track (although late, but you could say it’s never too late). This put us in a great position to knock of the top team. The other great milestone in this game that needs to be mentioned was the great man Chris (Cliffy) Ryan who played his 350th in this game. Again, like his done many, many times before, he made a half century 51, and like he’s done probably 300 times before, he was part of a team building partnership…. Unfortunately the following week would be the day long remembered by all for different reasons - Black Saturday. No play this day because of the heat – Kingston Heath got away with this one … The last game, like the first, was a game where we brought in another young fella – Steven Lay for his first game, and on what we all saw I’m sure it will be the first of many games in the top two grades … We won this game pretty easily, with a few nervous moments though. I do think I am a terrible spectator when it comes to watching my team play…. So we finished the season with four wins and one draw, really not good enough when I think of where we should have been. We need to work together as a club on our one day cricket and next season take it on … Season Highlights One player this season, more so than any other player, stamped his authority on Woolnough. Anthony D’Amico has shown the potential in the past two seasons but this year was his year. Anthony took 22 wickets, and was my go to man more often than not and the best part about Dimma is, he wants to bowl no matter the situation. He wants to have an impact, that is a great asset for a captain. The other bow he has is he can bat, and I hope whoever has the Two’s next year, if its not me, sees this and uses Dimma more with the bat. Well done Dimma on a great year. Rhys Pickles – Not far behind Dimma as a great story for the year. Very consistent at Number Three, 3 half centuries and a couple of 30s & 40s, and with the ball a very handy off-spinner, taking about 10 or so wickets for the year. He got rewarded for his efforts late in the season and played the last two in the One’s. Well done Rhys … Alex Bychkov – Behind the stumps and as an opener later in the season showed he has it and he is a great kid. So to you Alex, well done. Looking forward to playing with you next year … Steven Lay – I had Steve for one game, but as I said above I believe he will start up there next year and will be playing with his mate Alex. Here comes the next generation….God help us. Michael Fletcher – Plenty of talent, with both Bat & Ball. Not far away from a bumper season. Ed Dowling – again we had Ed only for the last game. He showed plenty and he too will be a permanent player in the top grades next season.

SENIOR TEAM REPORTS

Woolnough Shield (continued) Dion Lucas – full of potential. Really hope you stick with it Dion, and I hope I’m playing with you next season. Chris Nash – Another young kid full of potential. I have no doubt Chris will be back playing in the Twos and in the next few years will be throwing them down in the Ones. No Doubt…. Nick Martin – Great Kid, Leg spinners do not come around every day. Nick you have it, keep working on your bowling – it will all come together in time. To all the more ‘Experienced‘ guys - Cliffy, Rudi, Mat Patrick, Cal Wilkinson, Seba, Vinnie, Georgie (and I’m sorry but I know I have forgotten a few) thank you for the season, and the last two years.

C Grade – 3rds – by Vernon Rozario While we started the season off with great promise in the thirds. We were three wins from the first four games. We were very disappointing from there, unable to register another win from then on. Three wins and one draw was probably a backward step from our previous two years in C Grade, but there were many positives to take from the season that I’m pretty sure will only benefit the Club in the next couple of years. • The continued progress of youngsters Chris Nash and Nick Martin who got quite a few overs under their belts in a pre-cursor to playing higher up the grades in the following seasons. Both also led the way with the high standards they set in the field. • More exposure to Ben Thorpe, Ramzy Yacoub and Stef Krull who showed glimpses of form that they just need to turn into consistency. • Promising C Grade debuts to new boy Ed Dowling, and home grown trio Steve Lay, Jarryd Wilson and James Feather. Some great talents there that will no doubt be forcing their way into the top two grades in the next year or two. SEASON HIGHLIGHTS: • Darren Haw’s early season form (including a remarkable 98 against Hampton Central in Round 4), which eventually saw him back playing Longmuir Shield by the season’s end. • Brett Rogers leading the bowling attack throughout the year, shouldering most of the load and digging the side out of trouble on a regular basis. This included a stand-out performance of 6-53 with the ball and 49 with the bat against Carnegie South in round 5. • Georgie Sawaya’s reliability with the bat at the top of the order which saw him force his way back into Woolnough Shield during the season. • The return of Club favourite, John Holland, back after a few years absence reminding us of his all-round talents with a top score of 80* against West Bentleigh in Round 10 & a 4-14 in his return game to the Club against Chelt Park.

SENIOR TEAM REPORTS

C Grade – 3rds (continued) Thanks to: • Vinnie, for relinquishing his captaincy of the 3s this year, to help out in the 2s when they needed him, and then allowing me to continue in the role when he returned and being 100% supportive of me. He also then sacrificed his own position in the side to help out wicket keeping in the lower grades when they were also short handed. Just proves what all of us already know, you’re an amazing clubman Vin, always putting the Club first, and we are very lucky to have you. Thanks Cenz. • Mark Valentini, Chairman of Selectors, for your weekdays’ support in selecting teams, words of advice to me on my own game and most importantly keeping the other selectors in line! Great Stuff Rudes. • Tracey Fletcher, the CMCA’s best Club Secretary, for ensuring all the formalities get taken care of, letting us get on with just playing the game. You ARE the best Trace. • The Sawaya Brothers, George and Rod, for your match day support and just making a Captain’s job a whole lot easier with a lot less things for me to worry about. Thanks Brothers.

E Grade – 4ths – by Graham Wilson The season started with a really good mixture of youth combined with a few old wise heads (old men). We had a poor first game and then bounced back with an outright win in Round 2 only to drop the Round 3 game. This loss was the only other game dropped for the home and away season and the team finished off the season in third place on the ladder. We smashed Bentleigh Uniting in the first semi final and then repeated the thrashing accounting for Washington Park in the preliminary final. The grand final was played against Bentleigh ANA and after struggling with the bat and only posting 109 runs the boys showed the true Omega spirit and gave ANA a large scare having them seven down when they went past our score. Guys, I had a fantastic year playing with you and for the young guys, I hope that you have all learnt something beneficial which will help you as your development continues towards first eleven cricket. To Bluey, Stuey, Ben, Chippa and Tiger, well done guys the oldies still have plenty to offer. To Jack, Jazza, Matt, Jimmy and Macca, I look forward to watching you all play Longmuir shield cricket for this fantastic club in the not too distant future. Hope I see all you young blokes at pre-season training pushing hard for places in the higher grades. Preseason? What am I talking about? What’s a preseason? Thanks guys Willow

SENIOR TEAM REPORTS

F Grade – 5ths – by Ilya Fridman Rewind to 2 October 2008 and I am in the selection room picking my first side for season 2008/2009. Two days later and the 5ths are at home against Bentleigh ANA. As an experienced captain and with the advice of the youngsters (John Smith and Paul Upchurch) I won the toss and elected to bat. Dion Freeman started the season with a blistering 52 before the middle order slowly tumbled until Micky Brooker arrived at the crease and hit a fine 49 before we were all out for 169. The following week was one ANA would enjoy whilst we would love to forget. Chasing 169, they passed us 1 down – enough said. Round two would see the 5ths bring home their first 4 points of the season keeping Hampton Central to 141 with Kerrod Smith, Matt McCartney and Josh Lee scalping a couple of wickets each. The following week John Smith showed why he is a club legend guiding the team to victory with an unbeaten 77. A drive along Nepean Highway to Chelsea Heights saw us in top gear bowling the opposition out for 162, with Jake Chitty, on debut, claiming 3/23. However the batsmen couldn’t support the bowlers’ efforts and the team were all out for 115. Round 4 saw us come up against the unbeaten Carnegie South and with the injection of Normy Abdallah (lest we forget) we looked good on paper, but it was Josh Lee who had something to say with the fine figures of 3/6 and we rolled them for 87. Week 2 began with the captain being timed out and Jack Drummond steadying the ship with a Bradman like 38. In round 5 ESBCC posted a massive 6/268 and we looked the goods at 3/171 off 27 overs to unfortunately be all out for 242. Kyle Swinden hit a quick fire 45 and James Howard, a calm and collected 36. Last game before Christmas and both sides had a home advantage but it was the Ommies who took control early with Aiden Miller coming on first change and having the batsmen in all sorts with 4/12 and keeping Heatherton to a poor 73. Once again we made that look like something over 300, reaching it 7 down – James Howard once again showing glimpses of what the future holds with a timely 31 . New year and another drive down Nepean Highway had Kerrod Smith raring to go as he took 3/32 and restricted Edithvale/Aspendale to 200. However, our batsmen tumbled like Humpty Dumpty off the wall. Two veterans, John Smith 86 and Mick Aldred 43 (runs scored not their ages) kept us in the hunt to fall just short with 189. Duncan McKinnon hosted round 8 and Vince Micalizzi thought Andrew Sheedy would bowl tight (that’s tight) and he didn’t disappoint with 3/34. With only 3 batsmen reaching double figures it was always going to be tough to chase down any score, but like the season thus far, we came close but not close enough reaching 7/165. Round 9 and Chelt Park couldn’t handle Omega’s newly found spin gang, as Carl Williams (Josh Lee) was on parole from Barwon and decided to take everything including 4/28 and even though we had an extra batsman getting into double figures this game, we once again fell short.

SENIOR TEAM REPORTS

F Grade – 5ths (continued) In round 10 Woodsy decided to show the Ironman in him and bowled 17 overs straight to quietly snare 4/23, but that’s as far as this game got as the clouds decided to open up and the game got washed out. Final round for the season saw us come up against the Premiers and they showed us why they deserved the title. In conclusion, to sum up my first (possibly last due to a sacking) season as captain I would say it was an educational one, not only for myself but also to each and everyone of the players that represented the 5ths in 08/09. I would also like to articulate a massive thank you to Barry Howard, Paul O’toole, Katie Fiddler and John Smith who were there to cheer the team on week in and week out. Congratulations all for a fine season and have a safe and enjoyable break before we get right back into it in a couple of months time.

H Grade – 6ths – by Phil Taranto The 6th XI were promoted after winning last year’s flag. A few old heads played on to be around for Turtles 300th game. Our first game against Cluden saw us field a very young side with 6 under age players. The highlight was Matt Kaia scoring his maiden century with Tim Ryan, Tim McGaw, Grant Valles & Matt Taranto all contributing. Round 2 saw us make our debut on our new home ground at St.Mark's. Our effort was like the ground - very poor. Le Page rolled us for 90 with Kat Smith scoring 25 in his sole comeback game. Stefan Krull had a magnificent game in round 3 as he took 6 wickets as well as scoring a 50. We smashed Highett winning outright with heaps of overs to spare. In Round 4 the moment finally arrived, Johnny Mac's 300th game. Against a useful attack, we made 250 with Turtle top scoring with 79. Andy Ryan made a solid 65 in his comeback game. Stef, PT & Simmo also made handy contributions. The following week saw us play in freezing conditions and the game called off after some 30 overs with Carnegie South scoring 1/76. No dream finish for the great clubman but we got him over the line in this his last season. The following 2 games saw us struggle as our bowling stocks were depleted with Stefan rightfully promoted. Hampton United belted us for over 300 with ex-State player Andrew Grant scoring about 80 including hitting Micky Krull into the next postcode off 1 ball. The best of our bowlers were young Dylan Smith whilst Miller Upchurch celebrated his first ever bowl by taking 3/32. We tried hard with the bat scoring 280 odd with Earl, Marty & PT all scoring solid half centuries. We dropped heaps of catches in the Round 6 game against Kingston Heath and were unable to pull off a milestone victory for PT in his 350th game. Steve Lay batted brilliantly scoring 74, however, this loss saw us turning at the Xmas break 1.1/2 games out of the top 4. In the crucial round 7 game against 3rd side Southside/East Caulfield, we batted really well scoring 4/220 with Gumby 77, Uppy 35, Earl 40 & Marty 40*. Simmo & Ben Wilson bowled really well and helped set up a memorable win. We worked hard for runs against a quality North Caulfield attack. Turtle, Matt Gillard, PT & Patty set

SENIOR TEAM REPORTS

H Grade – 6ths (continued) up the win with a great bowling performance and suddenly after round 8 we were back in the 4. With the lack of rain, the grounds became rock hard and Earl found the perfect fat man's ground down East Sandy way. His innings of 80 included many great drives. Marty made another 35* and Uppy was solid as always at the top end. Ticca was the pick of the bowlers with 3 wickets. Round 10 was a weird game as we played on an oasis in Brighton. The ground was as green as anything and Stefan Krull belted a brilliant century in just over a hour. We experimented with the (which failed miserably) and made 196. Hampton United were 2/64 overnight but no play was possible the following week due to BLACK SATURDAY. The draw ensured we made the finals as our last game was a bye. On the eve of the finals we lost young Patty McMahon due to back stress and recalled veteran Micky Krull to our team. As clear underdogs we began our finals campaign on the massive East Caulfield ground. (It was so big, Stefan & Uppy ran a 4, whilst Earl & Marty walked a 2!!) Stefan belted a quick 29 including 7 fours whilst Earl made 46. Mal (40*) & Marty (82*) put on a great century stand as we made a very useful 3/230 cc. On a real bouncy wicket, Simmo showed some great signs for the future by taking 4/26 in his best ever bowling performance. PT turned back the clock taking 5/23 off 14 overs and we dismissed Southside/East Caulfield for 148. We played a blinder in the preliminary final against flag fancy Le Page. Uppy played a great supporting roll in assisting Stefan to score 111 in just over an hour. This was one of the most explosive innings any of us had ever since in all our days playing cricket. Earl 49, Mal 48 & Marty 59* set up a massive score of 4/299cc. Stefan (3/60), Turtle (2/35) & Micky (5/29) smashed Le Page who struggled to make 150. It was also very pleasing in that Simmo, Miller & Tim Howard all got a bowl in a final and showed some real promise for the future. Now the big one!! Carnegie South were the clear favourites having not lost a game all year. To play at the Brick was a fairytale finish for a few old blokes. In 2 interrupted days because of the rain, the opposition restricted us to 154. Marty continued his great finals campaign scoring 41 whilst Turtle smashed a great 30 at the end to at least make our score competitive. As hard as we tried on the last day, the ball just wouldn't go to hands. Micky swung the ball beautifully and without any luck took 2/35. PT kept the pressure on by taking 3/24 but the breaks just didn't go our way. In the end we just didn't make enough runs. Our finals squad consisted of 7 players who are 42+ years old as well 3 up & coming youngsters. To these kids, as I've said all year, hang in there - your time will come. There are many many opportunities' in the near future and I trust you enjoyed the season and are content knowing you were valuable contributors of a grand final side. Also, Stefan Krull is a real talent and I'm sure there are big things in front of you in the not too distant future. As for the veterans, it's fair to say that Turtle, Mal, Mick & Earl will no longer be full-time cricketers. You blokes are a credit to Omega and I've enjoyed your company so much again this year. As for the others, father time will dictate our futures.

SENIOR TEAM REPORTS

H Grade – 6ths (continued) I'd like to thank Earl & Mal for all their behind the scenes help throughout the year. Also to Kelly for scoring in most games. I'm so proud of this group as they simply refused to lay down. Fight to the finish was our motto and we continued to meet every challenge. Thank you to all the players who played in the 6th XI this season it was real privilege to lead this merry group of men. Good luck to you all in the future.

One-Day Grade – By Mike Bridges It took a humiliating defeat in last year’s Grand Final and a truckload of work off the field, mainly from Greg Valles, Dizzy Smith and John Rombotis. This created the burning desire within the members of this team to win the flag. At the start of the final series, although we weren’t getting ahead of ourselves, everyone’s focus was on the grand final, and heaven help anyone who got in our way!! We came through the regular season with only two losses, Le Page & Hampton Central, and ended up third. We had to win three finals on the trot if we were to be Premiers. Our first challenge was Le Page, who we played in the first game of the season with only 4 regular players in our line-up. We amassed a huge 256 runs off 34 overs and, Le Page, facing a run rate of over 7.5 an over, got cleaned up by our mean and miserly bowling attack. Next up, we faced our one-day finals nemesis, Bentleigh Uniting. We made a respectable 193 and set about trying to limit their batting line-up. Our bowlers and fielders did a great job but with 8 overs to go they were still a slim chance to knock the runs off. Bowling colossus, Mick Aldred, then proceeded to smash the opposition with a great hatrick. Two down, one to go!! Grand Final Saturday rolled around. The first rain in months chose to appear, so we were back to Le Page Oval No2 on Grand Final Sunday to play the undefeated Hampton Central with all of their guns firing. Our bowlers did the job bowling miserly spells and our fieldsmen kept the runs down to mostly ones and twos until their gun “Burger” came out and smacked up 60. Despite this, they only scored 140 – we had stuck to our game plan and it paid dividends. Greg and Billy opened and, after only two overs, the heavens opened up. For the next hour or so we all paced up and down, checked the rules with the umpires, and prayed for sunshine. Finally, the rain stopped and we resumed batting, unfortunately losing a couple of wickets early. Again, we had a game plan which we were sticking to, and slowly we edged our way in front. We kept chipping away at their total, with Rombo counting down the runs from about 40 runs to go. Gavin and Jason had stabilised the innings and it was fitting to see both of these batsmen out in the middle when the winning runs were hit (Jason, with a six).

JUNIOR CO-ORDINATOR’S REPORT – by Chris Ryan Season 08/09 looked very promising with the influx of new U12 kids and the performances of all our junior sides from the previous season. Although a few hiccups early we managed to field 2 U16s, 3 U14s and 4 U12s by mid October. The U12As, led by Neil Vorbach and Mike Bridges, did us proud by reaching a Preliminary Final with some kids in only their 2nd year of cricket and 2 in particular Jack Vorbach and Patrick Burnell represented the CMCA in the Mitchell Shield competition, winning it unbeaten. The U12Cs, led by Andy Power, Darren Haw and Chris Harrington, were very competitive in their 2nd year of cricket and were only a game away from playing finals themselves and with most playing a higher grade next year will continue to improve. The U12Ds, most of whom played for the very first time, were led by an army of coaches and managers in Paul Taberner, Andy Stewart, Paul O'Toole and Andy Ryan and although not winning many matches after jumping up from U12Fs, were also very competitive and will certainly improve next season. Our U12Es, led by Rob Konoroth and Tim McMahon, had a very tough but enjoyable job with 8 year old 1st year kids learning the game of cricket for the first time and with another year of Modified Rules for most will certainly gain more experience. To our U14As led by Graham Wilson, what a magnificent year they had losing only 1 game early in the season and then topping of the year winning the Flag comprehensively by over 100 runs, our 3rd U14A Premiership in a row. The U14Bs, led by Paul McGaw and myself, similarly had a great year and also took out the flag. The U14B Twilight, side led by Andy McGaw, had a frustrating year narrowly missing out on getting a win several times throughout the year, but were extremely competitive and did the Club proud with their efforts. To our U16A Twilight side led by Jarryd Lyons and Michael Soldatos, who only took on the job at the very last moment because we had no-one, did a tremendous job lifting the boys to a Grand Final only to go down at the last hurdle. A terrific job by all, especially our two coaches who themselves had only just come out of junior cricket the previous year. To our U16B Twilight side led by Bill Fiddler and Phil Taranto were also unlucky not to grab a few wins throughout the year but like the U14B TWs were always competitive and another year of juniors will certainly improve these guys. Special mentions to all our 1st year coaches who were thrown in at the deep end (hope we haven't scared you off!) and to all our other coaches doing it for the 2nd 3rd or 4th years. IT IS GREATLY APPRECIATED by the Club and by the parents. Also THANK YOU to Bill Fiddler for being our U16 Co-Ordinator and to Darren Haw our U12 Co-Ordinator, who worked tirelessly to sort out many an issue that we had throughout the year. Finally a very big THANK YOU to Mal Lay for his advice and support this year and to Tracey Fletcher our secretary for an outstanding job in registering, taking subs for over 100 kids and sending thousands of emails around the planet so as to make life easier for us all.

U16 JUNIOR CO-ORDINATOR’S REPORT – by Bill Fiddler At the start of the year we were left with approximately 23 players of which about 7 to 8 players were going to go through to their second year as U16s. 99% of players wanted to play Friday night so this year so we did not field a Saturday side. We left the second year players together and topped up the team with remaining, first years. Unaware of a third division in Twilight, the boys were graded in A and B. (B Grade contained 7 first grade sides.) There were 17 first teams and 3 divisions in this years U16 twilight competition, up from 2 divisions last year, so all boys were in for a very competitive year. Both sides performed to their best abilities with the U16As getting through to the Grand Final and being beaten on the day by a better side. They performed well during the year, only losing a few games, with many of the boys getting opportunities to play senior cricket. The U16Bs had a challenging year going through without a win against some stiff opposition, where all the second sides finished down the bottom with one or no wins. Many thanks must go to Jarryd Lyons and Michael Soldatos for putting their hands up to look after the U16As during the year. I looked after the U16Bs. I would like to thank those parents who helped out at training each Wednesday night especially to Phil Taranto and Wayne Kent. From all coaches, thank you parents for helping out on a Friday night in both U16As and U16Bs. Without your support there would be no cricket. Those who now will move into senior cricket next year, I hope the skills they have learnt over their junior years makes you better cricketers who will enjoy the good and not so good time out on the field for the Omega Cricket Club. For those that remain for a second year in U16s, who have come up against good cricketers this year, this will help you go forward with great confidence next season. To finish off we endeavoured to ensure a fair and equal opportunity "the Omega philosophy" for all players to succeed in their team and individual goals by giving all players a chance to enjoy their cricket whether you win or lose. I feel that this goal was truly met.

U16 JUNIOR TEAM REPORTS

T16A Report – by Jaryd Lyons & Michael Soldatos Our season started off on a positive with two close wins against Elwood and Brighton. We then dropped a game against Hampton Central. We followed on with convincing wins against Ormond and Hampton and a close win against Brighton Union in the last game. The preliminary final was a close affair against Elsternwick which saw us get home with overs to spare. This set up a grand final against Bentleigh Uniting who had gone through the season undefeated. We won the toss and elected to bat but with Uniting’s tight bowling we struggled to score. Captain Brad Wilson held us up with a top score of 27. We managed only 99 runs which was going to be difficult to defend, but in a grand final anything can happen. In reply our bowlers came out strong with two early wickets but unfortunately 99 was just not enough. They passed us 4 down in the 32nd over. Highlights Luke Barda 39*(Elwood), 51*(Brighton Union) and 46*(S/F Elsternwick) Brad Wilson 42*(Elwood), 27 (GF Bent Uniting) Alex Bychkov 51*(Brighton), 50*(Ormond) Lucas Forato 43(Ormond), 63*(Brighton Union) Ben Boyle 41* (Hampton), 37*(Bent Uniting) Nick Feather 40*(Hampton) Mitch Strahan 34*(Brighton Union), 30*(Ormond) Ben Wighton 38*(Brighton Union) Bowling Ben Wighton 3/22 off 9 (Brighton Union) Ed Clarke 2/16 off 5 (Ormond) Pete Potaridis 3/15 off 3 (Beaumaris) Shojib Alam 1/6 off 3 (Hampton) Mitch Strahan 3/16 off 6 (S/F Elsternwick) Congratulations to the boys, they had a great season and nearly went all the way. Special thanks go to Rod Strahan for umpiring, for helping at training and the BBQs. To Michelle Wilson for scoring (especially in the finals) and for lifts to and from games. To Craig Feather and Pete Boyle for umpiring. Also thanks to all other parents for taking kids to the games.

It has been a challenging year for this group of boys, having played 9 games during the season of which 3 games did not make it to the finish due to weather conditions; meaning no wins and three draws for the season. The Under 16 twilight competition is of a high quality which consisted of 17 first sides 7 second sides and 3 third sides. The boys were pitted against 7 other first sides in “B” division and the difference could be seen in the depth of skills amongst the first sides. The boys remained positive and enjoyed their cricket, looking for small goals to achieve; like getting the team to hit their highest score or ensuring that the opposition did not bowl them out, batting for their full 40 overs and encouraging individual players to better their best scores. They were unlucky not to win 2-3 games where they had posted good targets only to be robbed by the weather. They had many chances to take control of games but fielding and short bowling came back to “haunt” them and ultimately games lost that should have been won. Each boy shared in their effects, having a bowl and bat each game. The wicket takers were pretty even with half the side getting 4 or more wickets. Amay Nagar snaring a wicket in the final game to break a deadlock of a group on 5 wickets each (G Valles, S Locantro, J Fiddler) to take 6 wickets, the most for the season but just missing out by 0.4 on average. There were encouraging signs in our batting with most boys experiencing the opening position. Both Dylan Smith (114 runs for the year, top score 35) and Mitchell Kent (96 runs for the year, top score 31) scored well during the year to amass some good final totals and the outstanding batsman scoring 181 runs, top score 41* runs was James Fiddler; all great totals against quality opposition. Other outstanding scores were Patrick Mulcahy 53*, Matt Taranto 20, Alex Perezza 28, Steven Locantro 22, and Grant Valles 23. Award Winners: Batting: James Fiddler 181 runs with Average of 36.2 Bowling: Grant Valles 5 wickets with Average of 23.2 Fielding: Nathan Morton Coach’s Award: Dylan Smith Player’s Award (votes given by players after each game): James Fiddler.

U14 JUNIOR CO-ORDINATOR’S REPORT – by Chris Ryan We started the year with three U14 sides in the Saturday U14As and U14Bs and the Twilight U14Bs. After a few hiccups early with balancing the sides we got under way with all sides being very competitive. Our U14As, coached by Graham Wilson, although losing a game early soon became the form side and finished on top by the end of the season. A close Semi Final saw them into the Grand Final where they completely outclassed Bentleigh Uniting winning by over 100 runs. A fantastic effort by all the boys with two of them being in only their first year in U14s. Also throughout the course of the year, five of the boys played representative cricket for various sides, acquitting themselves very well. A truly outstanding achievement by all the boys and the coach on winning Omega it's third straight U14A Premiership. The U14Bs, coached by Paul McGaw and myself, started the season extremely well and by Christmas were sitting in second position undefeated. We dropped a couple of games after, but managed to end up second, going into the Finals. After a forgettable Semi where we were bundled out for only 63, we bounced back to win the Preliminary Final with a great team effort to get another chance at Kingston Heath in the Grand Final. After making 185 with the bat we had them 7/77 after day two and although the final day produced some anxious moments we rolled them for 157. A fantastic effort from everyone and well deserved. The T14B's, coached by Andy McGaw, had a frustrating year, unfortunately not getting a win but being very competitive and on many occasions were a chance to win going down narrowly. In a higher grade, and with two first year players, the boys acquitted themselves extremely well and I know the coach was very proud of their efforts. We were lucky enough to have what I feel were the best three coaches in the U14s this year in Graham, Paul and Andy, to improve and enhance the reputations and experience of the kids and know that all the boys will definitely improve from the experience provided by these three guys. To the parents of all three sides, thank you for your support of your kids and the coaches throughout the year, it has definitely made their jobs a lot easier. Finally I would like to say thank you to Tracey Fletcher for her tireless work behind the scenes with registrations, subs and emails which kept us all well informed, and to our President Mal Lay on his continued advice and support to myself in running the junior program – it is greatly appreciated.

U14 JUNIOR TEAM REPORTS

S14A Report – by Graham Wilson Well what a season we had in the 14A Saturday competition, following on with Omega’s code of everyone getting a fair go. We again had 11 outstanding contributors who played a very exciting brand of cricket. This proved time and time again that the formula will beat any team who has 3 to 4 players that try and do it all with the others just making up the numbers. The end result being back-to-back premierships for the boys. The group was made up of the following players: Ben Wilson, Matt Caia, Steve Lay, James Howard, Jono Curtis, Scott Vawser, Nick Vaswer, Braden OToole, Kevin Harris, Tim Wighton and Anthony Strahan. The team lost only one game for the entire season and was rightly crowned premiers after smashing Bentleigh Uniting in the grand final. I hope all the boys enjoyed the season and I hope that in some way I have helped them to become better cricketers. I truly enjoyed coaching the boys and watching them develop and grow as cricketers and would have no hesitation if asked to do it again. To all the trophy winners, congratulations on an outstanding personal year but always remember that these awards are not achieved without the help of your team mates. The guys you share partnerships with and those who take the catches all helped along the way to you receiving the individual awards. Thanks to all the parents for your support and help with umpiring, scoring and being there each and every week supporting your child’s chosen sport.

U14 JUNIOR TEAM REPORTS

S14B Report – by Chris Ryan & Paul McGaw

After settling our side for the year which consisted of seven 2nd year kids and five 1st year kids, we set about challenging the kids to take a few risks and set them some targets which they thought might not be achievable. Under the guidance of Paul McGaw and myself we continued to push the boys in certain areas and by Christmas we were sitting second undefeated. Solid performances even though we dropped a couple of games saw us finish second and playing in a 2nd Semi Final. A forgettable game where we were rolled for 63 saw us bounce back to win the Prelim Final against Bentleigh. Playing undefeated Kingston Heath in the Granny we made 185 thanks to a fantastic 66* from our captain – Harry. A further 21 from Michael Lee; 19 from Adam Tonkin; 16 from Liam Feather; 15* from Jake Schenk and solid support from the other batsmen made for an interesting day. We then bowled and after 2 overs Tim Ryan had sent both openers packing with some tight bowling and good fielding. Jake Schenk then snapped up another before Liam Feather grabbed 3 wickets (2 c&b) as well as a great run out which involved Jacob McGaw and Brent Kelly to have them 7/77 at the end of the day. The Final day saw us struggle a bit in the field as the nerves got the better of the boys.

We struggled to take a wicket, Jake broke through to have them 8 down but Kingston Heath kept coming. A great run out from Adam had them 9/152 and with them needing 29 from 3 overs Tim came back to claim the last wicket. A thoroughly deserved win from all the boys who all played their part in the success.

A TERRIFIC SEASON from everyone and shows what can be achieved with team work. John Barnes in his 1st season at Omega improved each game and was a solid bowler, and had a great game in the field in the G/F. Josh Freeman showed when he really concentrated that he became an important part of the team especially his bowling. Our two keepers, Matt Modica and Adam Tonkin, rarely missed a chance and provided solid batting all year, especially the 2nd half; and Brent Kelly who with confidence continued to improve both his batting and bowling. I believe Jake Schenk was one of our most improved performers and became one of our main strike bowlers. Michael Lee, after a slow start showed what he is capable of becoming a good opener and was solid with the ball and in the field. Chris Silvers was a solid middle order bat and cagey leg spin bowler who was always showing the way with his enthusiasm. Liam Feather was our main opening bowler who never gave anything away and top order bat with plenty of talent and our skipper Harry Russo was one of the highlights of the season with bat and ball and gave 100% every time. Tim Ryan had his best season yet, making his first half century and becoming one of our strike bowlers towards the end of the season and Jacob McGaw, our main spinner, who had a frustrating year with the bat but more than made up for that with his terrific fielding and leadership on the ground.

To you all a job well done. To the parents and grandparents that supported us each week – thank you very much and to all the Dads who scored and umpired – thanks for giving Paul and myself the time to do what we do best, coach the kids!

U14 JUNIOR TEAM REPORTS

T14B Report – by Anne Walker (coached by Andy McGaw) Well we didn’t win a match this season, but the boys have played each match with determination and pride – a real character building season. We had many rain affected matches and a number of weeks where we played with less than a full team. Each of our players has taken the opportunity to develop their skills throughout the year. Andy McGaw has coached the team with skill, kindness and patience, picking players’ individual strengths and weaknesses and working on developing those (the strengths that is!). 2010 should be a great year for these players. Thanks to those fathers who have scored and umpired regularly throughout the year. We could not do it without you. The ‘parents on the hill’ have set up each week and providing refreshments. Thanks particularly to the Bridges family – Michael and Denise. The fruit, food and ice cream, contributions from all families, made ‘half time’ fun (and filling!) for all present. Thanks also to the Almeida family for the homemade sausage rolls at full time. Thanks also to Michael who has completed all the backup team work, coached players, umpired and scored and especially for training us in how to enter and submit data to MyCricket. On to our team for this year. A little summary for each player: Bradley Almeida had never played cricket before playing 7 matches this season with us. He has developed his bowling skills well, with his best being 2/33 against Carnegie South. Tate Blackman is always surprising and shines when we are in a pinch. His best bowling stats were 1/4 from 17 overs with an average of 59. Batting 30 runs for the season, Tate’s highest run score was 16 runs. Sam Bridges, the consummate professional, had a great season, bowling an average of 13.25 with a best of 2/4. His batting was also fantastic with an aggregate of 154 runs, averaging 30.80, with a best of 38*. He also was our keeper on many occasions. Loukas Kakogiannis, our wicket keeper, consistent and ever watchful, bowling best 2/13. 22 overs, 2 maidens, 5 wickets for 145. 56 runs with the bat with a high score of 15. Trent Matheson has improved greatly throughout the year – particularly in the field, highest batting score 13, best bowling stats 1/8. 28 overs, 3 wickets for 147 and 34 runs for the season. Tim McGaw. Tim has had a good, consistent year bowling 35 overs - 6 maidens, 6 wickets for 135. Best Bowling 2/4. He has had some great hits throughout the season with a batting aggregate of 154 runs. Highest Score 46*, Average 14.43.

U12 JUNIOR CO-ORDINATOR’S REPORT – by Darren Haw This season saw no fewer than 48 players (including 20 new players) represent Omega in the Under 12 level. The introduction of 8 year olds being eligible to play for the first time this year saw an extremely young but exuberant group of players competing in the Modified level of competition. Whilst creating some challenges to all involved in co-ordinating each group, we were again fortunate to have numerous parents willing to help to ensure that all players were given the opportunity to play cricket throughout the summer. In particular, my personal gratitude goes out to each of the following for their involvement in Coaching and Team Managing throughout the season: Under 12A: Neil Vorbach / Michael Bridges Under 12C: Andrew Power / Chris Harrington Under 12D: Paul O’Toole (& Robyn) / Andrew Stewart / Paul Taberner Under 12E: Robert Konoroth / Tim McMahon In addition, there were always other parents willing to help not only at training (Dale, Mitch & co), but also on Saturdays and without whom we could not possibly field as many teams and players as we do. Again thanks to all and my apologies for any others I have missed. Whilst the individual efforts throughout the year will be highlighted in each of the team reports following, we can once again view the year as a success and a credit to all involved in ensuring that the juniors of today continue to be developed into the seniors of tomorrow. Bring on 2009/2010

U12 JUNIOR TEAM REPORTS

S12A Report – by Neil Vorbach The season started with 5 boys left from the previous year’s team, and with one returning to play after a season’s break. This meant we had 6 boys coming into the team who had never played a 40 over game of cricket before. After a couple of training sessions in conjunction with all the other U12s, it was decided to pull up stumps at Royal St Caths, and take the boys to the more exclusive and lush surrounds of '' The Brick ''. The move proved popular with the boys with attendances to training being the highlight, this also allowed me to concentrate on various skill levels with them, and also focus on some team aspects. The season started really well with a first up win in a one day game, this was great for the boys’ confidence against a pretty good team, we were off and running. As you would expect, playing in their first 40 over game in Rnd 2 against a team who had 5 Mitchell Shield players, we were always going to be tested. Although the boys lost this game, they performed well, the confidence gained by all the players was a significant point, receiving feedback from the opposition supported this view. All of a sudden the anticipation seemed to be getting higher, learning and enjoying their team mates was starting to show out. With steady, and at times rapid improvement, 2 more wins, 1 draw and a loss, the team was well placed at the Xmas break. The boys were looking forward to getting back into the cricket after a fairly long break, it was always going to be a challenge to play finals, the goals had all of a sudden changed within the group, and with this in mind, they voted to try and continue to have winning fun, rather than losing fun, with improvement and enjoyment still being a factor. Our goal was achieved with 3 wins and a draw after Xmas with all games being played as 1 dayers. The team finished off the home and away season in 2nd spot, a fantastic effort and a just reward for all their hard work. 2nd Semi Final: It’s always a challenge to play the top placed side & favourites in any level of sport, this was no exception and with some boys experiencing their first ever finals series our emphasis was to be competitive, stick to what the team had been doing, and try to perform to our ability and to enjoy the moment. The result of the game went as ''most cricket judges predicted'' as the boys were probably 40 runs short of the target on the first day. The Hampton United boys passed our score 3 down with plenty of overs left in the bank. Our bowling was slick early and very economical, the fielding was good and we were very competitive, a great sign against a quality top order batting side. Both sides decided to play out the game to give everyone a bowl and the batting team a bat, the kids enjoyed the experience and had some fun at the end. Preliminary Final: With the 2nd and 3rd placed teams playing off for the right to meet the HUCC Juggernaut, the game promised to be an entertaining affair for all parents and supporters. The first day saw us in the field on a very fast Keeley oval. The boys stuck to their bowling and fielding well, and with a bit of luck, could have restricted the opposition for a bit less. Chasing runs at around 4 and bit per over was going to be tough. We discussed the need for partnerships and to try and bat the full 40 overs. The boys gave it a real crack and were always in the game, however they ran out of overs in the end and finished about 30 runs short of the target. There wasn't much difference between the two sides, the game played in

U12 JUNIOR TEAM REPORTS

S12A Report (continued) great sprits, and our boys performed really well, and hopefully enjoyed their finals experiences. To finish 3rd in a quality and very even competition, especially with 6 players who had never played 40 over cricket before the season has been a great result for the boys. Their confidence in themselves from start to finish has also been a highlight, they have provided their parents with some great cricket throughout the season, and represented the club with distinction. I would like to thank the club for the opportunity to coach the U12s, and would like to especially thank all the parents who assisted in the day to day running of the team. All the dads for the setting up at home games, ground inspections and boundary cones, also helping with umpiring on occasions. All the mums who provided the morning snacks. Thanks to all the parents who helped with the scoring. Special thanks to Michael Bridges for being a fantastic team manager. And last but not least, a very big thanks to all the boys in the U12As, ''LETS DO THE OMEGA THINGO''. Season Highlights all games: Batting. Five boys making over 100 runs and finishing in the top 40 players, equal 2nd in the comp. Bowling: Six boys in the top 40 averages and aggregates, equal 1st in the comp. Fielding: Six boys in top 40, equal 1st in the comp Champion Player: Five players in the top 40, equal 2nd in the comp. Overall Improvement: All the boys in the team have improved in one or more facets of their cricket throughout the year. Their attendances at training has been fantastic, their confidence in themselves and their ability lifted, and hopefully, a better understanding of the game of cricket. Good luck for next season and beyond.

U12 JUNIOR TEAM REPORTS

S12C Report – by Chris Harrington (coached by Andy Power) This year was a good year from the boys and they all learnt a lot about the game and also about how to be good sportsmen. Their coach Andy Power was largely responsible for this. We finished just outside the top 4 and missed out on playing in the finals by one game. Interestingly, we were forced to forfeit a game after Christmas due to lack of available players. We would have probably won this game and this would have extended our season by a couple of weeks. During the year the boys allowed an opposition batsman to return to the crease after being run out in an unfortunate accidental collision with his fellow batsman. The willingness of our boys to offer this second chance to their opponent showed a magnificent character and attitude, and something they should feel very proud of. Our year had its share of wins, losses, washouts and even cancellations due to a heat wave! The team also had some great individual performances during the year. Ben Kelly’s leg spin had many batsmen fooled and he was even on a hat-trick. Mitch Edema’s improvement as a batsman was amazing. He showed great poise and concentration against the better bowlers and also made a stack of runs. Zak Hawker’s 3/11 against Mackie, the strongest team our boys have ever played against. Zak also made his highest score in this game with 11 not out. Connor Haw, Troy Smith and Kye Beveridge all had a terrific season with the bat. Tom Harrington, Khy Horsnell, and Harrison Mosely all improved as bowlers this year and will be ones to watch next year with the new cherry. Jack Power and Matty Simons proved what great all-rounders they are becoming and showed talent with both bat and ball this year. Jack even batted in one game with a broken finger. How about that for courage Graeme Smith? Cam Wilson smashed eleven 4s this year in a powerful display with the bat. The boys all showed great enthusiasm in the field and whilst we still have much to learn about always getting our knee down to the ball and also making sure we take our catches. The boys never gave up and were always a hard team to beat. We particularly showed that against Mackie. Good luck to the boys going up to the Under 14s next year, and also to the boys that will continue in the Under 12s. This group of boys is a very talented one, and Omega should be very proud of them. Thanks to all of the great parents that came along every week to not only support their own sons, but also to encourage every one of the other boys in the team. Encouragement is a proven tool for the positive development of young sportsmen and our team had plenty of it. The parents were also terrific with their help and support to our coach Andy Power. Thank you for all of your efforts throughout the year.

U12 JUNIOR TEAM REPORTS

S12D Report – by Paul Taberner A group of boys almost entirely devoid of any competitive cricketing experience assembled to represent Omega in a grade most probably too advanced for them. Bowling a full pitch length rather than in the back yard, facing boys usually six inches taller than them and having to stop, catch and throw a cricket ball for the first time took some getting used to. Never once did anyone shirk an issue or complain. They simply practiced hard, listened to advice from a number of eager parents and applied themselves commendably. James Caia and Harry Wardlaw pushed off from the fence and stormed in to bowl with pace and venom that belied their size. Luke Nunn, James Sziller, Tom Smith, Daniel Miller, Leigh Ryan and Ben Taberner were bowling a consistent medium pace line and length by season’s end, and Joel Olsen and Tom Stewart were landing loopy slowies that were very difficult to combat. Lachlan McCambley always batted courageously and never had difficulty finding gaps for singles and Kane O’Toole demonstrated a beautiful technique rarely seen by 9 and 10 year olds whereby he consistently stroked cover drives and worked balls off his pads. James Caia on occasions thrashed the ball down the ground for boundaries, whilst James Sziller, Harry Wardlaw and Tom Smith loved rocking back to pull anything short. Post Christmas Ben Taberner, Luke Nunn and Joel Olsen were really valuing their wicket and proving very difficult to dismiss. Our man behind the stumps for most of the season, Campbell Dawes, was ever reliable and barely let through a run all year doing a fine job. This group of boys showed great camaraderie and improved immensely as the season wore on and suggested that they will be a force to be reckoned with in seasons to come. Despite the early mornings all the parents enjoyed witnessing their development and seeing how much they enjoyed their cricket.

U12 JUNIOR TEAM REPORTS

S12E Report – by Robert Konoroth Due to the numbers of junior boys fronting for training for the Omega’s Under 12s modified rules it was decided to split these players up into two teams playing in the Under 12 E modified rules competition. Of these teams I was allocated a very young list, mostly eight and nine year olds of eager first year players. The boys bonded together from the very first round giving their all against much older, larger and experienced opposition. The highlight of the season came in round 7 against Kingston Heath. The boys chased down 111 finishing with 118 with Joseph Aloi retiring on 33. Unfortunately this was our only win for the season. We could honestly say that from our 10 rounds we were within a handful of runs in 7 of them. If we could work on our extras I’m sure the narrow losses would have been wins. The year saw steady improvement both with our batting and bowling and the understanding of the game. Under the modified rules version, where each player bowled two over’s and batted for 4 we were never bowled out in our 20 overs and our bowling ensured that our opposition rarely passed 70 runs. I would like to thank all the players, your friendship amongst one another, your sportsmanship to the opposition and your willingness to participate is a credit to each and every player. I’m sure in years to come if this team can stick together they will provide stiff opposition as each player displayed plenty of ability. A special thankyou to Andy Power who manfully managed the training sessions due to my work commitments, organising these boys and giving them all an opportunity was a mammoth task. To Tim McMahon, Team Manager, for scoring our games. Even when his son was sick and didn’t play Tim still came down to ensure the scoring and paperwork was completed. To all the parents, we thank you for the support and help on the Saturdays umpiring setting up etc we all had fun and plenty of friendships were formed. I’m sure your sons appreciated it. Finally, thank you Tracey Fletcher for all the courteous emails, you ensured that all coaches were well informed. .

CLUB AWARDS (continued) Club Legend Award Last season Omega introduced a new award – CLUB LEGEND, which is based along the line of the AFL's Hall Of Fame. The criteria for Legend works on a points system for both playing and non-playing achievements. The Legend does not necessarily have to be a Life Member. Once the required points are achieved that person can be nominated for Legend status. From the nominations, only Life Members can vote and importantly only one Legend will be inducted per season. Points can be accumulated by games played, runs scored, wickets taken, averages awards, premierships, captain, grand finals played, club champion and aggregate runs and wickets. Bonus points are awarded for performances in both the 1st XI and 2nd XI. Off field points are awarded for being President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Best Clubman, Outstanding Services Award, senior and junior coach, committee member, Most Promising Junior and Life Member. The Life Members this year voted John Smith to be inducted as the club's second official Legend. John was inducted at this year’s senior presentation night and presented his Legend medal by the Club’s Inaugural Legend – Noel McGaw. Some of John’s achievements include: y First played: 1973 (recruited from Moorabbin) y Life Member in 1987 (4th in the club's history) y Total games: 323 (including 118 in 1st XI and 55 in 2nd XI) y Total runs: 6434 (including 2433 in 1st XI) and 1106 in 2nd XI) y Total wickets: 88 (25 in 1st XI) y Batting average 1st XI: Twice y Fielding Award 1st XI: Once y Team Captain: 5 times y Grand Finals: 9 y Premierships: 2 (1 with 1st XI and 1 with 4th XI) y Club Champion: once y Best Clubman: once y Outstanding Services: Once (Award is named after John) y President: 4 years y Vice-President: 3 years y Treasurer: 6 years y Committee person: 19 years y Junior Coach: 13 years y Milestones: First member to play 100 club games (1981)

MIKE SMITH CUP The eighth annual ‘Mike Smith Cup’ took place between the Richmond Football Club and Omega Cricket Club on Sunday, 30 November. The game was played in great spirits, with Omega winning in front of a record crowd full of Richmond fans and people from the Moorabbin community. The day was organised by Omega Life member and Senior Richmond FC trainer Chris ‘Dizzy’ Smith, in memory of his brother Mike who passed away of cancer in 2001. Money raised from the sporting memorabilia auction was donated to the ‘Tigers In the Community Program’, supporting the Very Special Kids; St Marys House of Welcome and the Richmond and Collingwood Housing Estates. All members of our club should take the time to thank Dizz on his efforts in making this day not only a success for our Club, but also for charity.
