Prof. Dr. Paul Latimer September 2004 The saints in Gregory of Tours’s miracle stories frequently transfer such values as peacefulness, charity and mercy from theory into public action by their miracles. This exemplary function of the miracles in the Histories has lately been acknowledged in the literature. However the stories in the miracle books, especially the healing miracles, have been neglected in this respect. The main question of the thesis is whether the entire corpus of the miracle stories can be fitted into the perspective of the socio-moral reform found in the sermons of Caesarius of Arles, in the canons of Merovingian Church councils, and in the works of Gregory of Tours himself. The ideal society envisioned by Gregory of Tours and Caesarius of Arles, like the monastic community on which it was expected to model itself, was one that embraced ideal values such as charity, humility and obedience. Considering that the envisioned reform was of an ascetical character, the authors’ ideal values and proposed methods for realizing them are investigated and brought into relation with the miracle stories within the framework of the ascetical stance and practice as found in Late Antique Gaul. It is observed also in the miracle books that saints take an active part in the realization of the ideal values by exemplifying them and by punishing the transgressors. Moreover, they help the bishops in transferring these values into public action and in persuading their flock to preoccupy themselves with their future salvation instead of the present world. Another important result is that the healing miracles in which the patient undertakes some sort of ascetical practice before the cure or vows never to commit sins afterwards can be similarly considered in the context of socio-moral reform. iii ÖZET TOPLUMU İYİLEŞTİRMEK, BEDENİ İYİLEŞTİRMEK: TOURS’LU GREGORİUS’UN 6. YY. I would like to express my gratitude to my thesis supervisor Assistant Professor Paul Latimer for his invaluable guidance and contribution throughout this study, as well as the numerous important but difficult-to-find articles he has procured for me from London. I would also like to thank my professors in the European History Branch, Assistant Professor David E. Thornton and Assistant Professor Cadoc Leighton, without whose assistance I could not have made the rather unusual leap from civil engineering to European history. Not to forget the thanks I owe to the Ottomanists Dr. Eugenia Kermeli and Assistant Professor Oktay Özel, whose courses have contributed a good deal to my training as a historian. Special thanks go to the Chairman, Assistant Professor Mehmet Kalpaklı, and the History Department for the invaluable opportunity I have been granted of five months’ research in Heidelberg, without which the present study could not have been what it is now. Finally, I would like to thank my parents for their unfailing love, support and encouragement. v TABLE OF CONTENTS ABSTRACT................................................................................................................iii ÖZET .......................................................................................................................... iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS ......................................................................................... v TABLE OF CONTENTS............................................................................................ vi LIST OF ABBREVIATIONS..................................................................................... ix CHAPTER I Introduction: the Miracle Stories and Socio-Moral reform? .................. 1 I.1 Visions of ascetical socio-moral reform in sixth-century Gaul .............................. 1 I.2 The Asceticism of Caesarius of Arles and Gregory of Tours in Historical Context 5 I.3 The miracle stories of Gregory of Tours: the genre and its purposes..................... 9 I.3.1 Persuasion of the population of the validity of Christian revelation ............................ 14 I.3.2 Reminding the population that through the cults of saints Christianity offered effective solutions to deal with the problems of this world ....................................................................... 16 I.3.3 Providing an effective tool for the maintenance and reproduction of the necessary “reverentia” towards the saints ................................................................................................... 17 I.3.4 The preservation of the moral values and integrity of the community ......................... 19 I.3.5 Consolidation of the power and position of the bishop and his family against the clergy, community, dukes and kings ......................................................................................................20 I.4 Were the miracle stories, notwithstanding their place within a certain genre, also intended to serve socio-moral reform, and if so, how far? ................................................ 21 I.5 The question of the thesis ..................................................................................... 23 I.6 The method........................................................................................................... 25 CHAPTER II The Main Components of Ascetical Stance ........................................ 28 II.1 The “negative” component: renunciation ............................................................. 28 vi II.2 The “positive” component: contemplation ........................................................... 35 CHAPTER III The Main Components of Ascetical Practice: Virtuousness and the Ideal Values................................................................................................................ 43 III.1 Charity versus avarice .......................................................................................... 44 III.2 Humility versus pride ........................................................................................... 50 III.3 Mercy...................................................................................................................

In recent years, several scholars, most notably Alberto Ferreiro and E. Kim Follis, have credited Martin with a greater degree of leniency toward irregular religious activities than the other bishops of his day, and both of these writers have sought to uncover the source of this tolerant attitude.

  • Fatherhood in Gaul Between Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages
Fatherhood in Gaul between Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages By: Hannah Probert A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Sheffield Faculty of Arts and Humanities Department of History December, 2016 2 Abstract This thesis explores the idea and experience of fatherhood between the fifth and eighth centuries in Gaul. Fatherhood in this period, both as a concept and as a family identity, has been largely unexplored by historians despite the perceived shift from the Roman household dominated by the paterfamilias to the apparently more egalitarian kinship structures of the Early Middle Ages. This thesis has thus examined the different kinds of fatherhood that a person might hold and how that fatherhood, and the relationships it defined, changed across a lifetime and across the period. The powerful concept of the paterfamilias declined by the eighth century and instead fatherhood was recognized in two forms; the ‘fictive’ fatherhood held by men of religious status and biological fatherhood within the family where authority was increasingly defined by their fatherhood of young children. These two central forms of fatherhood were interlinked and shared an increasing emphasis on representing the affectionate bonds between fathers and their children. This thesis thus contributes a new understanding of the development of fatherhood and the family which moves beyond a simple division between the ‘Roman’ family of Late Antiquity and the ‘Germanic’ Sippe of the Early Middle Ages towards a more nuanced understanding of the changing relationships between the fifth and eighth centuries. As fatherhood was a relationship that impacted individuals at every level of society and at all stages of their life this study surveys the variety of sources that are available for Gaul in this period including hagiography, legal texts and archaeology.

  • Fear in the Mind and Works of Gregory of Tours
Fear in the Mind and Works of Gregory of Tours Catherine-Rose Hailstone PhD University of York History March 2020 Abstract This thesis uncovers and analyses Gregory, Bishop of Tours’ attitude towards the philosophical and theological concepts of the fear of God and demonically-inspired fear. It presents a new contribution to the history of Gregory of Tours and the Merovingian World, the intellectual and theological history of the wider late antique west, the history of emotions, and the history of fear. Chapters one and three use the Vulgate and a selection of theological literature from those late antique writers whose views drastically shaped the doctrine of the Church in Gaul and perspectives of Gregory of Tours, to establish what the wider intellectual attitudes towards the fear of God and those associated with demonic figures were, and to show how they developed from the fourth to the sixth centuries. Chapters two and four use Gregory’s textual references to the fear of God and those associated with demonic beings, in his Ten Books of Histories, books of Miracles, and The Life of the Fathers, to argue that he used these fears to participate in the long- standing tradition of debating Christian paideia and the formation of the virtuous self. 2 Contents Abstract…………………………………………………………………………………………………2 List of Contents…………………………………………………………………………………………3 List of Tables……………………………………………………………………………………………7 Note on Translation……………………………………………………………………………………..8 Acknowledgements…….……...…………………………………………………………………………9 Authors Declaration……………………………………………………………………………………11 Introduction……………………………………………………………………………………………12 1. • The Prose Lives of Venantius Fortunatus: Hagiography, Lay Piety and Pastoral Care in Sixth-Century Gaul
THE PROSE LIVES OF VENANTIUS FORTUNATUS: HAGIOGRAPHY, LAY PIETY AND PASTORAL CARE IN SIXTH-CENTURY GAUL BY KENT E. NAVALESI DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History with a concentration in Medieval Studies in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2020 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Ralph W. Mathisen, Chair Professor Danuta R. Shanzer Professor Carol Symes Professor Richard A. Layton ABSTRACT This study uses the prose hagiography of the poet Venantius Fortunatus (c.530-600/609 CE) to examine the relationship between hagiographical narrative and pastoral care in the early Merovingian kingdoms. Consisting of the lives of six bishops and the ascetic Queen Radegund, this body of work has been studied primarily as evidence for the social, religious and political power of the Gallic episcopacy and the literary promotion of saints’ cults in sixth-century Gaul. Hagiography, however, was also becoming increasingly instrumental in bishops’ religious instruction of the laity and in the laity’s own efforts to achieve salvation. This study uses stylistic, semiotic and intertextual analysis to examine the ways these works spoke to the laity’s fundamental religious concerns, particularly in the context of their public reading in the mass. These concerns included, among others, how salvation should be conceptualized, how sin should be dealt with, how Christians should live among non-Christians, and what role should be afforded women in the spiritual life of the church. Close reading of the prose lives reveals that Fortunatus exploited the multi-valency of religious images, concepts and symbols to provide answers to these questions within an orthodox pastoral framework.
