Calvin Thomas ABSTRACT The Batman media franchise (comics, movies, novels, television, and cartoons) is unique because no other form of written or visual texts has as many artists, audiences, and forms of expression. Understanding the various artists and audiences and what Batman means to them is to understand changing trends and thinking in American culture. The character of Batman has developed into a symbol with relevant characteristics that develop and evolve with each new story and new author. The Batman canon has become so large and contains so many different audiences that it has become a franchise that can morph to fit any group of viewers/readers. Our understanding of Batman and the many readings of him gives us insight into ourselves as a culture in our particular place in history.

Abstract Established in 2008 with the release of Iron Man, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has become a ubiquitous transmedia sensation. Its uniquely interwoven narrative provides auspicious grounds for scholarly consideration. The franchise conscientiously presents larger-than-life superheroes as complex and incredibly emotional individuals who form profound interpersonal relationships with one another. This thesis explores Sarah Hagelin’s concept of resistant vulnerability, which she defines as a “shared human experience,” as it manifests in the substantial relationships that Steve Rogers (Captain America) cultivates throughout the Captain America narrative (11). This project focuses on Steve’s relationships with the following characters: Agent Peggy Carter, Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow), and Bucky Barnes (The Winter Soldier).

    Magi Hossameldin Professor Thelma Bauer Digital Media Foundations- D304 8:00 - 11:20AM Class December, 18th 2018 Jack Kirby-The Real Unknown Hero ​ Often praised as the “King of Comics”, Jack Kirby has influenced generations of comic book artists and writers alike. Not only a talented comic book artist, he was also a great storyteller, which is considered to be responsible for his success and longevity. Kirby’s influence can still be seen in any modern superhero comics, and even on the big screen. Kirby is responsible for creating many iconic and beloved comic book characters. Jack Kirby was born as Jacob Kurtzberg on August 28, 1917, on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in New York City. From and early childhood, Kirby aspired to be a storyteller, having being influenced by the stories his mother told him, and the stories in the newspaper comics and in the movie theaters. As a self-taught artist, he started drawing cartoons for the newspaper of the Boys Brotherhood Republic. By the age of 14, he was enrolled in Pratt Institute, but dropped out the afternoon of his first day due to financial pressures. He worked at various studios before starting his career as a super-hero comic book artist. Kirby didn’t begin his career in comics but in the animated cartoons, namely Popeye cartoons at the Max Fleischer studios. He began working at Lincoln Newspaper Syndicate as a political, gag, and strip cartoonist. Through work, he met Joe Simon, and formed a team. In 1940, they were hired by Timely Comics Company, which is known in the present as Marvel Comics.

KRYPTON - JOR-EL'S LAB - NIGHT KAL-EL'S POV BABY KAL-EL sits in a makeshift ROCKET, somewhat crude, but sturdy. JOR-EL is talking to Kal-El, but we cannot understand him. He is speaking in Kryptonian. The building shakes, CRYSTALLINE STRUCTURES collapse around. Jor-El walks away from us, holding his wife's hand as they move to a CONTROL PANEL. Behind Jor-El, a ROBOT with blue eyes, standing as tall as a man, enters the launching bay of Jor-El's lab. A robotic voice speaks. Baby Kal-El reaches out for the robot as it walks close to Jor-El's rocket. It transforms into a SMALL SIZED ROCKET with a BLUE EGG-SHAPED NOSE CONE. EXT. OUTER SPACE The rocket ship fires away from Krypton as it EXPLODES into shards of DUST and CRYSTAL. INT. ROCKET SHIP Kal-El sleeps as the rocket increases to hyper speed. Within the craft, a soft BLUE LIGHT grows brighter, illuminating Kal-el.

This study conducts a rhetorical narrative analysis of three key superhero films (The Dark Knight, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War) to locate moments when superhero characters make ethical decisions. The study evaluates their decision-making process using three ethical frameworks selected for their popularity in ethics courses as well as their relevance to the subject material; deontology, virtue ethics, and utilitarianism. Superheroes are famous for doing ‘the right thing’, and the purpose of this study is to determine to what degree these films function as an ethics education tool for the public which consumes them. In other words: do these films have a potential to instruct the viewer in answering ‘what is right’? This study looks closely at the ethical decision-making process in superhero films and determines the ways in which superhero films may indicate a potential for teaching ethical theory when these characters make the moral decisions for which they are famed. This study determined that utilitarianism and virtue ethics are both highly visible in superhero films, but rather than serving as a medium for learning, these films build and glorify a cult of personality.

Being back in action again reminds them, as Namor often says, of what is the best about him. I love Winter Soldier but we don't see him much. Well, you could if it was still there. The cool part? They're entirely pragmatic. The Kree were after an object that can control 'gods', so they sent their best Hunter after the original Invaders to find out where they hid it. So this weapon that Baron Strucker used to unleash Hela on the allies in WWII was stopped by the Invaders, who then hid it from the world and had Vision wipe their minds A big bad from the 40s realizes that their main foes Steve, Bucky, Namor and the Human Touch have all managed to survive in the present times as worthy opponents, and so they attack again. Hammond flies up into the stratosphere to reboot his hard drive, which had worked before, but he lost his powers and died. The plot is Finally, a 1 issue that actually introduces the characters to new readers, and in a way that isn't cumbersomw to long-time fans.

As a result of California's "three strikes and you're out" law, inmate populations have expanded exponentially and so has the prison industrial complex. Prisons are "serviced" by giant corporations, like MCI and Marriott, with monopoly contracts for catering, telephone service and medical care. Inmates are often employed by private corporations at extremely low pay. Companies that service the criminal justices system and are served by prison labor need sufficient quantities of raw materials to guarantee long-term growth - the raw material is prisoners, and industry will do what is necessary to guarantee a steady supply. For the supply of prisoners to grow, criminal justice policies must ensure a sufficient number of incarcerated Americans regardless of whether crime is rising or the incarceration is necessary. The proposed project, "Capitalist Punishment", will challenge audiences to join in critical resistance against the corruption of the Prison Industrial Complex through interaction with: - a museum installation of 40+ products produced by prison laborers

    A Unied theory of Superman's Powers Ben Tippett ([email protected]) September 30, 2009 Abstract Since Time immemorial, man has sought to explain the powers of Kal- El, a.k.a. Superman. Siegel et al. Supposed that His mighty strength stems from His origin on another planet whose density and as a result, gravity, was much higher than our own. Natural selection on the planet of krypton would therefore endow Kal El with more ecient muscles and higher bone density; explaining, to rst order, Superman's extraordinary powers. Though concise, this theory has proved inaccurate. It is now clear that Superman is actually ying rather than just jumping really high; and His freeze-breath, x-ray vision, and heat vision also have no account in Seigel's theory. In this paper we propose a new unied theory for the source of Su- perman's powers; that is to say, all of Superman's extraordinary powers are manifestation of one supernatural ability, rather than a host. It is our opinion that all of Superman's recognized powers can be unied if His power is the ability to manipulate, from atomic to kilometer length scales, the inertia of His own and any matter with which He is in contact. 1 Introduction Kal El, or Superman, has a host of recognized powers which seem to have no unifying cause. These powers include the ability to move quickly, resistance to physical damage, extreme strength, the ability to y, x-ray vision, heat vision and freezing breath. It is our contention that all of Superman's abilities can be explained by supposing that Superman has the ability to alter His own inertia, and the inertia of objects with which He is in contact.
