  • Year in Review 2020 – 2021
YEAR IN REVIEW 2020 – 2021 THE GARMENT DISTRICT ALLIANCE 1 WELCOME BACK Like most of Midtown, the Garment District faced new challenges this past year. Pedestrian counts were well below normal, as office tenants predominantly worked from home and ground floor businesses remained closed or limited their hours. Reduced activity impacted public safety and affected the ways in which we typically measure success. However, the Garment District Alliance was never more important to the neighborhood than it was this year. Despite the pandemic, our office never closed, as our dedicated staff continued to provide critical public safety and sanitation services. We worked closely with the West Midtown community, our neighboring BIDs, and the City of New York to tackle quality of life issues. We supported our local companies through social media promotions and business development initiatives, and we pushed forward with important streetscape, horticulture, and public art projects. In short, we kept the Garment District ready for business, while laying the groundwork for the years ahead. Today, we are happy to report that a slow but steady stream of employees is returning to the neighborhood. We are thankful for all the resilient companies of the Garment District, several of whom we celebrate in the pages of this report. Whether they have returned to the neighborhood or can’t wait to come back, our diverse businesses community is what will continue to make the Garment District a vibrant part of Midtown. Recovery has begun. We look forward to everyone getting back to business. Barbara A. Blair Martin Meyer President Chair 2 NEIGHBORHOOD PROMOTION 3 Doggy Bags A series of gigantic, playful dog companions took center stage on Broadway from September to Thanksgiving.

Each year this event brings together experts in stem cell research and regenerative medicine to present their work and to discuss their latest research findings. I am convinced that this year, Hannover Medical School and the Cluster of Excellence “REBIRTH” as host institutions will provide a very stimulating environment to discuss the latest developments in stem cell research and genome and tissue engineering. The State of Lower Saxony is at the fore- front of research in these areas, not only with the Cluster of Excellence “REBIRTH”, but also with other research institutions, innovation-minded professionals, and strong enterprises. I am convinced that this conference represents an outstanding opportunity for national and internation- al scientists to discuss new findings and emerging, cutting-edge advances in a stimulating and interdisci- plinary atmosphere.

BRUCE CALE, SERIALISM AND THE LYDIAN CONCEPT by Eric Myers* ____________________________________________________ [This article appeared in the October, 1985 edition of APRA, the magazine of the Australasian Performing Right Association.] hen the Australia** Music Centre's film on Australian composers Notes On A Landscape came out in 1980, it was apparent that most of the ten W composers included, picked themselves: Don Banks, Anne Boyd, Colin Brumby, Barry Conyngham, Keith Humble, Elena Kats, Graeme Koehne, Richard Meale, Peter Sculthorpe. In addition to them, there was one composer who, on the face of it, might not have been regarded as such an automatic choice: Bruce Cale. Bruce Cale on the verandah of his house in the Blue Mountains, with his dog Muffin… PHOTO CREDIT MARGARET SULLIVAN __________________________________________________________________ *When this was written in October, 1985, Eric Myers was editor of the Australian Jazz Magazine, and writing jazz reviews for The Australian. **Australia Music Centre was at the time the correct spelling. Sometime later ‘Australia’ was changed to ‘Australian’. 1 After all, he was principally known as a jazz composer and performer, and when the film was planned, had been back in Australia only two years, following 13 years in Britain and the United States. On the other hand, there were some eyebrows raised in the Australian jazz world that Cale was "the only jazz composer" included in the film. But those who were aware of Cale's work knew that he had been included because of his orchestral writing as well as his jazz composition; his work had certainly emerged from jazz but, in a highly individual way, he was seeking to merge jazz and classical traditions.

WBC International Championchips th This is up to February 15 2021 Mauro BETTI, WBC Vice President Chairman WBC International Championships Committee [email protected] mobile: +39 331 2874411 A tough 2020 ended by recording a dignified WBC International activity properly considering all the damage and difficulties caused by the virus. Several championships were already scheduled and dated, when suddenly called off due to the harmful outbreak of the pandemic. We still had a solid closure for a doomed year. My personal affections were diabolically touched with the untimely death of my golden and beloved wife Marina, after forty years of mutual love. In difficult times we have to grit our teeth until the bad moment is over. The virus has still been biking many parts of the world and all activities have been serioulsy jeopardized, not only boxing. The lockdown is still in place in several countries and it seems that the solution to the problem is not close, at all. We at the WBC are indomitable fighters. We will confirm our projects without hesitation. We expect another difficult year ... but we’ll make it. The report below will indicate that there are many championships scheduled. The Committee has always remained very active and has never spared any hope, or let alone any effort to have a constant activity. I wish all WBC friends a peaceful and healthy 2021 On the line March 5th Gniew (Poland) Queensberry Poland Pawel Augustynik v Max Miszczenko 175 Silver Francis Warren March 26 UK London Queensberry UK Danny Ball v Sam Gilley 147 Silver Francis Warren March 26 Jakarta, Indonesia Armin Tan Promotions Tibo Monabesa v Toto Landero vacant 108 Lbs March 27 (Ekaterinburg - Russia) 130 Lbs M.
