It includes 488 named species in 90 families, with 153 (31%) of the species considered endemic. References to New Zealand records and other significant references are given for all species previously recorded from New Zealand. The location of New Zealand material is given for a number of species first recorded in the New Zealand Inventory of Biodiversity but with no further data. Information on geographical distribution, habitat range and, in some cases, depth range and colour are given for each species. Yaldwyn* Australian Museum, Sydney Abstract The SurVey C0 Iected 102 specimens of Brachyura *a -| c ! ? belonging to 29 Species and 10 families.m Seven species were taken by the Portland Pier Survey in 1963 five of which are also represented in the Port Phillip Survey collection. Only four of the 38 species known m 3re re resent d the collection. P ? '? The majid Paratymolus talipes and the xanthidTamh-YPilumnuspf acer are recorded from Victoria for the first time; previous records of the graspid\Cyclograpsus audouinii from Victoria are doubtful. Seventeen species known from Port Phillip are not represented in the collection. All are typically cool temperate species well known from SE. Australia. Four species of Pilumnus were represented in the collections and these are compared in detail with other SE. Australian Pilumnus species. Most abundant in Port Phillip are Hahcaranus ovatus and H. rostratus (Hymenosomatidae) Notomithrax minor (Majidae), Ebalia (Phylyxia) intermedia (Leucosiidae), Lilocheira bispinosa (Gone- placidae), Pilumnus tomentosus and P. monilifer (Xanthidae), Nectocardnus integrifrons and Carcinus maenas (Portunidae) and Pinnotheres pisum (Pinnotheridae). The majority of the species are found on the sandy areas around the edge of the Bay, particularly in the W areas; no species was taken in the central deeper parts of the Bay. Ovigerous females of most species were collected in late summer. Parasitism by sacculinas was small and confined to two species of Pilumnus. -

Over 10,500 names are treated including 6,793 valid species and subspecies (with 1,907 primary synonyms), 1,271 genera and subgenera (with 393 primary synonyms), 93 families and 38 superfamilies. Nomenclatural and taxonomic problems are reviewed in detail, and many resolved. Detailed notes and references are provided where necessary. The constitution of a large number of families and superfamilies is discussed in detail, with the positions of some taxa rearranged in an attempt to form a stable base for future taxonomic studies. This is the first time the nomenclature of any large group of decapod crustaceans has been examined in such detail. (Plate XX.) The Crustaceans which I have now the pleasure of bringing before the notice of the Society were obtained at the Mauritius by M. Robil- lard, and recently forwarded by him to the British Museum. They are:—(1) a fine Spider-crab, described below as Naxia robillardi, which was dredged at a depth of 30 fathoms [that such a large and interesting a species should have remained so long unnoticed is very remarkable; and I can only account for it on the supposition that this crab lives habitually at considerable depths, and hence has escaped the notice of collectors of the littoral forms, most of which are well known]. (2) an example of Neptunus sieboldi, A. M.-Edwards, a swimming crab hitherto a desideratum to the national collection; and (3) several specimens of a Hermit Crab which I think is Coeno- bita perlata, M.-Edwards: although having the inferior surface of the joints of the first three legs very hairy, these specimens in all other particulars coincide with M.-Edwards's brief description in the ' Histoire naturelle des Crustacea' (ii. p. 242, 1837), and with the excellent figure in the large illustrated edition of Cuvier's ' Regne Animal' (pi. xliv. fig. 1). Decapod Crustacean Chelipeds: an Overview
Journal of Biophysical Chemistry, 2009, 1, 1-13 Decapod crustacean chelipeds: an overview PITCHAIMUTHU MARIAPPAN, CHELLAM BALASUNDARAM and BARBARA SCHMITZ The structure, growth, differentiation and function of crustacean chelipeds are reviewed. In many decapod crusta- ceans growth of chelae is isometric with allometry level reaching unity till the puberty moult. Afterwards the same trend continues in females, while in males there is a marked spurt in the level of allometry accompanied by a sud- den increase in the relative size of chelae. Subsequently they are differentiated morphologically into crusher and cutter making them heterochelous and sexually dimorphic. Of the two, the major chela is used during agonistic encounters while the minor is used for prey capture and grooming. Various biotic and abiotic factors exert a negative effect on cheliped growth. The dimorphic growth pattern of chelae can be adversely affected by factors such as parasitic infection and substrate conditions. Display patterns of chelipeds have an important role in agonistic and aggressive interactions. Of the five pairs of pereiopods, the chelae are versatile organs of offence and defence which also make them the most vulnerable for autotomy. Regeneration of the autotomized chelipeds imposes an additional energy demand called “regeneration load” on the incumbent, altering energy allocation for somatic and/or reproductive processes. Partial withdrawal of chelae leading to incomplete exuvia- tion is reported for the first time in the laboratory and field in Macrobrachium species. 1.
