The Unlikely Counter-Terrorists The Foreign Policy Centre is an independent think-tank launched by Prime Minister Tony Blair (Patron) and former Foreign Secretary Robin Cook (President) to revitalise debates on global issues. The Centre has developed a distinctive research agenda that explores the strategic solutions needed to tackle issues which cut across borders – focusing on the legitimacy as well as the effectiveness of policy.     lk. Editorial It is common place to say that we live in a time of change. Few things remain constant in the world about us: as the pace of life quickens the people and objects we encounter gain and lose familiarity at a geometric rate. We are constantly waging a battle to hold onto the few precious things we can call our own. At the same time, there is something inherently stale and self-destructive in any entity which continually denies its potential for healthy growth. In a reference to the growth and eventual liberation of the spirit, William Blake, the English poet, once wrote: "He who binds to himself a joy Doth the winged life destroy." The impulse which prompts us to hold on to the precious elements in our lives ought therefore to be tempered with an impulse to grow, to promote and accept healthy change. This year, 1975, witnesses the beginning of a new era in the traditions of Fort Street. The small beginnings at Observatory Hill constitute the basis of a growth that we may cherish. But it must be the new branch that now draws the main part of our attention. So let us then work at a new tradition, reflecting the best aspects of the new times we are in. We hope that this year's FORTIAN reflects our own desire to grow in such a way as to add new and even more meaningful dimensions to the FORTIAN tradition; and we hope that you, the readers, will endeavour to do the same in your own lives, in your own way.

    “Private Dancer”—Tina Turner (1984) Added to the National Registry: 2019 Essay by Evelyn McDonnell (guest post)* Tina Turner There are three definitions of comeback, according to Webster’s: 1. “A return to formerly enjoyed status or prosperity” a.k.a. “a return to popularity.” For Tina Turner’s comeback--she had not had a record in the American charts since 1975--it was not for lack of trying: she had recorded two albums and toured frequently. But she was mostly seen as an oldies act, someone whose fame was a thing of the past. “Private Dancer” made the artist born Anna Mae Bullock more popular and prosperous than ever. 2. “The act of making up a deficit, as in a contest or game.” The first two decades of Turner’s career were defined by her relationship to her husband and bandleader, Ike Turner. When she left him in 1976, with 36 cents in her pocket, she had to reinvent her work, her identity, her life. Meanwhile, Ike was hailed as one of the pioneers of rock ’n’ roll, his 1951 song “Rocket 88” widely credited as the first hit of that genre. But that is the principle reason why, yet again, the Class posted the highest national attendance of any catamaran class in the U.K. - bar none! For me, though, it was, Sport Nationals excepted, my first time. And what a time I (and Mrs. Editor) had. It was nothing short of superb. A real showcase event for our sport, our Class and our Association. It was truly memorable. Great racing, great event management and a social side which had huge appeal across a wide age range. Sprint 15 sailing at its best. I did, however, come away with something of a new respect for regular una-riggers. All that hiking upwind for mile upon seemingly endless mile in F4-5 and heavy chop came a bit keen for the preferred Sportster in me. Talking of which, the Sport Nationals at that other spiritual home which is Instow were, once again, a resounding success for all the same reasons as Pentewan. The Instow attendance gave us third spot in catamaran National’s attendances.

Aisha Jawando, who has been with the Company since its world premiere in Spring 2018, has stepped up to play the title role, with Ashley Zhangazha as Ike Turner, Tsemaye Bob-Egbe who plays the role of Tina at some performances each week, Madeline Appiah as Tina’s mother Zelma, Irene Myrtle Forrester as Tina’s Grandmother GG, Howard Gossington as Record Producer Phil Spector and Lyricist Terry Britten, Francesca Jackson as Ike and Tina’s manager Rhonda Graam, Ava Brennan as Tina’s sister Alline Bullock, Jammy Kasongo as Tina’s father Richard Bullock and Tina’s first love Raymond Hill, Edward Bourne as record company Marketing Manager Erwin Bach and Oscar Batterham as Tina’s Manager Roger Davies. Ensemble members are Daniella Bowen, Chloe Chambers, Joelle Dyson, Lejaun Sheppard, Joseph Richardson, Kibong Tanji, Jayme-Lee Zanoncelli, Cameron Bernard Jones who also plays Tina’s son Craig and Ashlee Irish who plays Tina’s son Ronnie, and swings Gavin Alex, Derek Aidoo, Joshua Da Costa, Amandla Elynah, Hannah Jay-Allan, Angela Marie Hurst, Leisha Mollyneaux and Samuel J. Weir. The children’s cast comprises Miah Hasselbaink twelve years old from Surrey, Athea Andi eleven years old from Surrey and Ayani Lingibe-Ajavon ten years old from Hertfordshire who share the role of Young Anna Mae; Mimi Etete-Edge twelve years old from Brighton, Perola Da Cunha eleven years old from Hackney and Jasmine Djazel nine years old from Wandsworth share the role of Young Alline; and Cameron Mukasa-Brown seven years old from Waltham Forest, Theo Lee nine years old from Hounslow and Romell Barrocks-Bedeau nine years old from Lambeth share the role of Young Craig.
