New Zealand Journal of History, 44, 2 (2010) The Establishment of the Canterbury Society of Arts FORMING THE TASTE, JUDGEMENT AND IDENTITY OF A PROVINCE, 1850–1880 HISTORIES OF NEW ZEALAND ART have commonly portrayed art societies as conservative institutions, predominantly concerned with educating public taste and developing civic art collections that pandered to popular academic British painting. In his discussion of Canterbury’s cultural development, for example, Jonathan Mane-Wheoki commented that the founding of the Canterbury Society of Arts (CSA) in 1880 formalized the enduring presence of the English art establishment in the province.1 Similarly, Michael Dunn has observed that the model for the establishment of New Zealand art societies in the late nineteenth century was the Royal Academy, London, even though ‘they were never able to attain the same prestige or social significance as the Royal Academy had in its heyday’.2 As organizations that appeared to perpetuate the Academy’s example, art societies have served as a convenient, reactionary target for those historians who have contrasted art societies’ long-standing conservatism with the struggle to establish an emerging national identity in the twentieth century. Gordon Brown, for example, maintained that the development of painting within New Zealand during the 1920s and 1930s was restrained by the societies’ influence, ‘as they increasingly failed to comprehend the changing values entering the arts’.3 The establishment of the CSA in St Michael’s schoolroom in Christchurch on 30 June 1880, though, was more than a simple desire by an ambitious colonial township to imitate the cultural and educational institutions of Great Britain and Europe. -

It will investigate how it was that these women, often working in close association with other members of their family, became involved in photography as an amateur recreational pastime. It will pursue this investigation within the conceptual and structural framework in which these women’s photographs were produced, collected or processed, and organized into albums, arguing that the making of such albums was as much a cultural and social practice as a representational one. Photograph albums are often considered to be generic objects. However this study will treat albums as distinctive and unique documents, comparable to other more-widely consulted primary sources such as letters and diaries. In particular, it will explore the capacity of the album to be a pictorial artefact that provides its own conditions for viewing images over time and space and contribute to a growing body of literature that insists that the photograph album is an important object of study within social history, and indeed within the history of photography in general. -

Cotter Medical History Trust University of Otago, Christchurch, PO Box 4345, Christchurch 8140 © Elizabeth Wright-St Clair ISBN 978-0-473-24073-8 Introduction In 1973, at the outset of my postgraduate research into Scottish Presbyterian missionaries, I bought numerous packs of 10” x 8” lined index cards and named one for each of the 1500+ individuals listed in the churches’ staff lists from 1873 to 1929, the period to be covered by my thesis. Some weeks later I was puzzled when one of my supervisors commented that I was obviously adopting a Namierite approach to history. A considerable time elapsed before I made the connection with Sir Lewis Namier’s innovative history of the eighteenth century British Parliament, based on detailed biographical information for every member, gathered from a wide range of sources. When I arrived in New Zealand in 1989 I met a kindred spirit in the shape of Rex Wright-St Clair. Rex had spent more than three decades collecting data on more than 3000 men and women who had begun practising medicine in New Zealand between around 1840 and 1930. We quickly established we had adopted similar methodologies, utilising what public health officials used to described as “shoe-leather detection” when they were in search of the locus of an outbreak of infection. -

Wool Bale Stencils: A Design History of New Zealand Branding and Visual Identity 1850–2019 A thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Massey University, Wellington, New Zealand. Annette O’Sullivan 2019 Abstract Wool bale stencils have had a ubiquitous presence in New Zealand culture for over 150 years. Originating from sheep brands, marks of station identity were stencilled on bales of wool for export to overseas markets. In time, stencilled marks represented the quality of wool and reputation of the station, and became the visual identity for the station. Following discontinuation in the wool industry, at the beginning of the 1990s stencil plates and derivative stencil letters were used for new forms of visual identity in New Zealand design. This material culture study combines historical contextualisation with close reading of objects, and observes their social life or how they have been used by people over time. It draws on object and visual evidence found on field trips to historic New Zealand sheep stations, and examples of how stencils have been used in contemporary culture. The thesis is structured through the life stages of a designed object: design and making; using, consuming, and distributing; and discarding and recycling. This maps the transformations of the wool bale stencil from an everyday utilitarian object to new forms of expression and representation in New Zealand design. -
