Bamboos and ratt ans are valuable non-ti mber forest products. They have wide and diverse use in Nepal. Their products such as furniture, handicraft s and household items are increasingly becoming popular among consumers for being cheap, durable, handy and att racti ve. In additi on, the products are considered as environment-friendly, and have good internati onal market. However, marketi ng of bamboo products are not well developed in Nepal. Enough eff orts have not been made to understand technical knowhow, conti nuous market development and product innovati on. This has hampered the development of bamboo and ratt an products in the country.

Although, potenti al of western market for Nepalese bamboo and ratt an products has been recognized, no concrete eff orts have been made to explore such market. For this reason, the Market Development of Bamboo and Ratt an Products with Potenti al Project (MRBRPP) under the Department of Forest Research and Survey (DFRS) recently commissioned a study on Review of Developed Western Markets for Bamboo and Ratt an Commoditi es of Nepal. This publicati on briefl y describes the background of bamboo and ratt an resources in Nepal, gives general accounts of the relevant policy documents, elaborates the marketi ng of bamboo and ratt an at home and abroad, and discusses world trade scenario related to bamboo and ratt an products. It further deals with status of bamboo and ratt an in the western markets, with supplements of export status of Nepal and its potenti al bamboo and ratt an products appropriate for western markets. Moreover, it identi fi es major constraints and opportuniti es related to western markets for bamboo and ratt an commoditi es of Nepal, and recommends ways to grab such markets.
