  • Premium Rate Telephony and Associated Issues Final Report from the BBC Director General to the BBC Trust, May 2007
Premium Rate Telephony and Associated Issues Final Report from the BBC Director General to the BBC Trust, May 2007 1. Introduction 1.1 Context Following a number of revelations and resulting investigations into broadcasters’ use of premium rate telephony, allegations about BBC activity in this area surfaced in late February of this year. Reports were first published in the News of the World on 25 February about some pre-recorded editions of Saturday Kitchen. These were followed by a contact from a member of the public to the BBC on 9 March regarding an edition of Blue Peter broadcast in November 2006. On 17 March the Daily Mirror made further allegations about audience deception in relation to a second children’s programme, Smile. This report seeks to provide for the Trust an overview of the issues surrounding the BBC’s use of premium rate phonelines and the particular incidents which have been investigated. It also provides an account of the actions that have and will be taken by the BBC in relation to the various concerns which have surfaced. 1.2 Investigative Work Undertaken The BBC has investigated each set of allegations as they have arisen and where issues have been identified has sought to address them comprehensively. Over the last two months, the following work has therefore been undertaken: • Initial review by Controller, Daytime of Saturday Kitchen 5th March 2007 • Initial review by Controller, BBC Children’s of Blue Peter 9th to 14th March 2007 • Initial review by Controller, BBC Children’s of Smile 16th to 19th March 2007 • Independent review to inform BBC management on what went wrong on Blue Peter by Andrea Wills, former Chief Adviser, Editorial Policy, for the Director, BBC Vision, 17th May 2007.

Why did Erica Falck’s mother save an old Nazi medal? Th e only person in the small Swedish town of Fjallbacka who might provide clues to its origin is a retired history teacher, but his responses to Erica’s questions are evasive – and two days later, he is found brutally murdered. • 2016 RISJ Paper Jisun Youm Plus TS Final Tweak
Reuters Institute Fellowship Paper University of Oxford Past, Present, and Future of Food Programmes in Public Service Television By Jisun Youm Michaelmas, Hilary and Trinity Terms 2015~16 Sponsor: FBC (Foundation for Broadcast and Culture) Acknowledgements All of this would not have been possible without the help from Tim Suter, my academic supervisor. As a former BBC producer and also founding member of Ofcom, his expertise and knowledge on public service broadcaster policies have helped in refining this research. His guidance through British television history and food is what comprises half of what is written. If there is any sense of British humour to be found in this paper, I have to return the honours to Dr. David Levy and Dr. James Painter. The two pillars of Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism did not only introduce the journalistic insights but also the witty observations that helped making this an enjoyable read. If not, it just shows my lack of ability in imitating good British jokes. Financial aid was what actually made this all possible. My utmost gratitude goes to FCB, who made the choice to send me to Oxford and picked up the bills. Also my employer, KBS, kept me on their payroll even though I was not actually working for them for a year. The Sabbatical experience in RISJ has enriched me both as a person and a television producer. I wish the two respectable organizations make full use of this. I would like to thank all the RISJ journalist fellows who have endured my imperfect jokes and homemade Kimchi.
