J a Y S O N a C E V E D O J A Y S O N A C E V E D O • F U N N Y | P E R S O N • B I O G R A P H Y At just the young age of 21, Jayson Acevedo performed in six English- speaking stand up comedy showcases in Paris, France as part of his affectionately dubbed "Latino In Paris" Comedy Tour. That same year in August, Acevedo received the opportunity of a lifetime by being invited to perform at the world's largest arts festival, The Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Scotland. Now 26, Acevedo has yet to clean his room. Acevedo continues to perform regularly throughout the city of Chicago at notable venues such as Zanies, Second City, Laugh Factory, The Comedy Bar, The Revival, House of Blues, UP, & his nephews house along with many other comedy/variety showcases & comedy clubs in Chicago & beyond. In addition, he has also opened & shared the stage with notable comics such as... Tim Meadows (Saturday Night Live) Jeff Ross (Comedy Central Roasts, Bumping Mics) Hari Kondabolu (NPR/Totally Biased w/ W. Kamau Bell) George Perez (Joe Rogan Experience, Showtime) Ian Edwards (Comedy Central "The New Negroes") Steve Rannazzisi (FX's The League) Reno Collier (Blue Collar Comedy Tour) John Roy (Conan) Acevedo finally filmed his very first unique comedy special "Lonely Wit" in 2018 in front of an oversold hometown crowd & self released the hour-long improvised musical stand up comedy experience on his very own website, jaysonavocado dot com Acevedo was also chosen as a featured performer for the 2017 & 2018 NBCUniversal BreakOut Comedy Festival along with being chosen among 200 auditionees as a 2017 NBCUniversal/Second City Bob Curry Fellow, which is a unique fellowship that boasts a rigorous master program for serious minded talent seeking a career in sketch comedy & is only awarded to exceptional talent selected by audition & adjudicated by Second City directors & producers. This led to being cast in a 10-week sold out run of Second City's Diversity & Inclusion Show "Urban Twist" Acevedo's comedy has proven to translate well around the world, having told jokes in 4 different countries (France, Scotland, Colombia, & Mexico). Acevedo was recently & chosen to proudly represent the city of Chicago in Mexico City as part of the 2019 Year of Chicago Theatre by "Choose Chicago," the official destination marketing organization for the city in direct partnership with the legendary Second City. Her call continues to challenge current stand-up comics to acknowledge intersectionality, particularly the perspectives of women of color, and to encourage comics to actively intervene in unsettling the notion that our U.S. culture is “post-gendered” or “post-racial.” This dissertation examines ways in which comics are heeding bell hooks’s call to action, focusing on the work of stand-up artists who forge a bridge between comedy and political activism by performing intersectional perspectives that expand their work beyond the entertainment value of the stage. Though performers of color and white female performers have always been working to subvert the normalcy of white male-dominated, comic space simply by taking the stage, this dissertation focuses on comics who continue to embody and challenge the current wave of intersectional activism by pushing the socially constructed boundaries of race, gender, sexuality, class, and able-bodiedness.

Rossing Department of Communication Studies, IU School of Liberal Arts, Indiana University – Purdue University, Indianapolis, IN 46220, USA This essay identifies emancipatory racial humor as a disarming critical public pedagogy that confronts racial hegemony. Acknowledging the interpretive quandaries of humor and the possibilities of racist humor, this essay tells an often overlooked story of the comic “heroes” who struggle against dominant racial meanings, power relationships, and identity construc- tions. The essay analyzes the pedagogical possibilities of critical humorists who creatively confront hegemonic racism and whose work participates in critical projects of social, politi- cal, and cultural transformation. Such emancipatory racial humor serves as a critical public pedagogy that exposes dominant public pedagogies, injects counternarratives into the strug- gle over hegemony, and subverts naturalized racial meanings and privileges.     When Comedic Stereotypes Cease to Be Funny: The Controversy over Apu and The Simpsons From characters such as Tonto in the 1950s show, The Lone Ranger, to Apu Nahasapeemapetilon from the highly acclaimed cartoon The Simpsons, racial and ethnic stereotypes remain an abiding concern throughout the media. Though strides toward equal representation and accurate racial depiction in movies and television are being made, racial stereotypes and jokes regarding race and racial stereotypes continue to run rampant across genres. This is especially true for comedy, a genre that thrives on pushing the boundaries of appropriateness, tasteful humor, and what is often called “political istolethetv / CC BY 2.0 / modified correctness.” An important part of this debate centers on whether these stereotypical portrayals made for the sake of getting a laugh are truly harmful or if they are simply making hot-topic issues seem less dauntingly serious. Following the making of a documentary by comedian Hari Kondabolu entitled “The Problem with Apu,” The Simpsons has faced an onslaught of criticism about Apu, the Indian convenience store owner with a heavy accent. The show responded via a scene featuring a short interaction between characters Marge and Lisa in its 29th season; Lisa breaks the fourth wall and states to the camera, “Something that started decades ago and was applauded and inoffensive is now politically incorrect. What can you do?” Many concerned with the show’s portrayal of Indian-Americans seemed to perceive this response as dismissive.
