We aim to help people avoid being lonely or isolated, and to improve their wellbeing. There is a lot happening in Edinburgh, and many great organisations offering support. However, we recognise that sometimes it can be hard to find the information that you need. We are here to help. The Community Navigator team have regular information stalls in libraries and other community venues. Look out in your local library for our next session, or give us a call to find an information station near you. You could also write to us at the Health in Mind office or call the LOOPS phoneline. Contact details are on the back of this magazine. Can you help distribute the magazine and spread the word about our service? We want to make sure that we are reaching the people who need us most. Please get in touch if you can help. South East Edinburgh Thank you for picking up the fourth issue of Discover: South East. Discover: South East is part of the LOOPS (“Local Opportunities for Older People”) Community Navigator project in South East Edinburgh. It’s been an exciting few months here in the Community Navigator team, getting to know all the local groups and organisations running in the South East of Edinburgh. I recently joined LOOPs and have been welcomed by so many friendly people as I get to know the area. I am still very keen to learn more about the South East’s groups, and would be delighted to hear from anyone wanting to showcase their activity or have it highlighted in the next issue of Discover. I hope you enjoy reading the magazine and do get in touch if you have any suggestions for future editions. We are always happy to take enquiries directly from our readers and can contact you via post, phone or email. I have really enjoyed writing letters to people since starting the job; it is a form of communication which sadly is not often used anymore and it’s always nice to receive something positive in the post. Would you like to receive a personal letter detailing some groups or interesting activities? Or a friendly phone call to let you know your nearest walking group or lunch club? Fill out the enquiry form enclosed in the magazine and we will get back to you in a matter of days. We are always sure to include the details of what buses you can get, how long it would take and any group costs involved (most are very low priced or free!) I’d like to say a huge thank you to all the brilliant volunteers who have helped with our information stalls, proof reading and contributing to the magazine! It is hugely appreciated. If you haven’t done so already, please consider sending in your feedback on this issue, and subscribe to receive the Contact Us next copy free to your door. Just send in the form on page 17 Jen Learmonth or give us a call. Community Navigator South East Health in Mind 40 Shandwick Place Edinburgh EH2 4RT 0131 225 8508 Jen Learmonth and the [email protected] Community Navigator Team 3 Supported by a network of volunteers, Contact the Elderly organises monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for small groups of people, aged 75 and over. Volunteer hosts take it in turns to welcome you and the rest of the group to their home for a few hours, and a volunteer driver will always pick you up and go with you to the tea party. This service is free. I had heard such brilliant things about the tea parties that I went along to chat to the current guests at one of the many groups in Edinburgh. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT THE TEA PARTIES? “Good company, laughter and friendship”, said Betty, one of the guests. The group also enjoy the chance to visit new parts of Edinburgh they may not have visited before, and relish the opportunity to meet the hosts who put on a beautiful spread of tea and food. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHERS? “We are all here for the same reason, for company!” the group agreed. Jean, who has been attending for two years, spoke about loneliness and trying something different. ”Sometimes you do have to give yourself a push to try something new. There really is no harm in trying.” The groups are extremely relaxed and the mission of these tea parties was definitely being fulfilled in the group I visited. Friendship was flowing, and the tea was too!
