Phil Upchurch 1 A prolific guitarist whose distinctively funky, blues-steeped jazz style has graced well over a thousand recordings across the popular music spectrum, the legendary Phil Upchurch has also recorded 27 albums of his own leadership, as well as movie soundtracks. Jazz enthusiasts love and respect Phil Upchurch for his singular approach to composition. In developing his sound, Phil demonstrates no allegiance to any of his contemporaries and is indisputably one of the best in his field. He goes from classical to jazz to contemporary funk as easy as walking from one room to another. He is also an amazing electric bassist. In honor of Upchurch’s instrumental mastery, D’Angelico Guitars is soon to release a Second Edition of his signature Phil Upchurch Guitar. Adding to his media profile is Phil’s newfound second career as a fresh face for television advertising. Liner notes for Commemorative CD of Johnny Pate Concert, by Devra Hall 1 of 6 On this balmy Sunday afternoon, jazz fans flock to a theatre on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. People are trying to get tickets to this afternoon’s sold-out concert. “We don’t have to sit together,” a couple tells the young lady behind the counter. “How about standing room?” someone else asks. Minutes before show time, concert producer Ken Hanlon is still fixing tickets. “If anybody tells you a good story, and you have one, give it to them,” he instructs the box office staff, adding, “A few tickets won’t put a dent in the bill.” Hanlon, trim, with steely gray hair, short beard, deep blue eyes and an affable demeanor, has brought together eight of the world’s greatest jazz performers, and they are here to pay tribute to the life and legacy of a man who has profoundly touched their musical lives. At $25 a seat, it is the most under-priced ticket in town. Shortly after 2:00 p.m., the lights dim and the auditorium grows silent. More than five hundred and sixty fans and friends fill each and every seat, as well as standing-room spots allowed by the fire marshal, in the Judy Bayley Theatre, part of the UNLV Performing Arts Center. I am seated with my husband in the eighth row, slightly off-center toward stage right. Our tickets read, “Arnold Shaw Popular Music Research Center presents Johnny Pate 80th Birthday Celebration Concert.” Johnny who? Johnny Pate and my husband are close friends, have been for more than 60 years, so I know the answer to this question.

A former bass player for Billie Holiday and George Shearing, he became a talent manager for such singing legends as Joe Williams, Nancy Wilson, Sarah Vaughan, Betty Carter, Abbey Lincoln, Etta Jones, Dianne Reeves, Marlena Shaw, Roberta Flack and Shirley Horn. He didn't skip the instrumentalists, either, handling such prominent names as Herbie Hancock, Yusef Lateef, Ahmad Jamal, Ramsey Lewis, Eddie Harris, Herbie Mann, Wes Montgomery, Billy Taylor, Stanley Turrentine, Freddie Hubbard and Les McCann. His autobiography, "Men, Women and Girl Singers: My Life as a Musician Turned Talent Manager," is brimming with anecdotes and insight because this is a guy who was there. He was there the night Ben Webster walked into Joe Louis' place in Harlem carrying a gold-headed cane with which he cleared the drinks from the long bar, threatening to swing at anyone who tried to stop him. Levy put his arm around the brawny star of the Duke Ellington saxophone section and eased him into the street, around the corner and into a little cellar bar where he fed him a couple of drinks and calmed him down. For a gent like that, handling a temperamental jazz diva held no terrors. He tells how he avoided process servers who were trying to break his contract with Wilson. He has a few choice words for Flack, some candid ones about Lincoln and tales of a few previously unpublicized misadventures of Hubbard.

Danny Mixon Pianist and Organist (212) 636-9262 P.O. Box 020990 Brooklyn, N.Y. 11202 A prolific piano virtuoso who has performed in the U. S. and Internationally, Daniel Asbury Mixon was born on August 19, 1949 in Harlem and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Growing up in a musical household he was influenced by his mother and grandparents beginning his early artistic expression at the age of 3. He studied and performed as a tap dancer at the Ruth Williams Dance Studio and even then was known as “The Show Stopper.” Danny attended the High School of Performing Arts with dance as his major. During an afternoon outing at the Apollo Theatre with his grandfather Danny was inspired by the jazz musicians he heard. It was then that he decided that he would like to be a pianist and he never once looked back. At the age of thirteen Danny began piano lessons. His most memorable piano instructor was Sir Roland Hanna. By the time Danny was 17, he was invited to play with Sam Brown and Patti Labelle and the Blue Bells in Atlantic City and two years later he found himself with the Muse Quartet under the auspices of Chris White. Among his earlier credits Danny played regularly with Joe Lee Wilson from 1967 to 1970, Betty Carter from 1971 to 1973. He also recorded and played extensively with Charles Mingus and Dannie Richmond in the late 70’s. He began playing the organ at Brooklyn’s Baby Grand with Carlos Garnet, and accompanied Big Maybelle at the Blue Coronet.
