Using data drawn from these primary sources, I assess how the Maroons of Jamaica forged an identity for themselves in the century under slavery following the peace treaties of 1739 and 1740. -

Reviewed by Karolyn Smardz Frost (Atkinson College School of Arts and Letters, York University) Published on H-Canada (July, 2008) Recreating the Black Refugees Blacks on the Border: The Black Refugees in British North America, 1815-1860 is a wonderful book. Far more than the sum of its parts, this slim volume focuses on several critical themes while expertly detailing the history of an important segment of the African Diaspora. Harvey Amani Whitfield, an assistant professor at the University of Vermont, demonstrates how African Americans from different parts of the United States, slave and free, who fought in the British forces in the War of 1812 came to found families, cultural institutions, and communities on Nova Scotia's inhospitable soil. He further details their subsequent development as a community and as a new, hybrid culture. This, Whitfield maintains, came about largely because of the hardships the so-called Black Refugees faced, not the least of which was the unrelenting and pervasively discriminatory treatment these brave and hardworking people encountered in their adopted Maritime home. The story of Nova Scotia's Black Refugees is generally less well known than that of the earlier migrants from the United States, the Black Loyalists. -

Learn more here. A piece by the Liberty Africa Writers highlights an enslaved Ghanaian woman named Breffu who led a revolt against the Danish army stationed in the West Indies in 1733. Read more about Breffu’s revolt here. A new podcast episode by Teaching Tolerance explores the relationship between the institution of slavery and indigenous populations in North America. The episode, "Indigenous Enslavement," is hosted by Hasan Kwame Jeffries and Meredith McCoy and features an interview with Christina Snyder who discusses how European invasion changed indigenous ideas about bondage. In her article, “A Downtown Jackson Alley Was Renamed After a Woman Who Escaped Slavery," Sarah Clinkscales details the renaming and transformation of a street in Jackson City, Michigan, to honor Emma Nichols, an enslaved woman who came to the city on the Underground Railroad. International Journal of Humanities and Cultural Studies (IJHCS) ISSN 2356-5926 Vol.1, Issue.3, December, 2014 Captivity among the Maroons of Jamaica in the Seventeenth and Early Eighteenth Centuries: A Comparative Analysis Amy M. Johnson Elon University, USA Abstract This article examines the practices of captivity among the Maroons of Jamaica during the early colonial period. In this paper, I argue that the practice of holding people in bondage in Maroon communities, which was strongly influenced by the West African customs of their ancestors, had much in common with the southern Native American nations in the United States before the mid-1800s. Through a comparative analysis, I draw conclusions about the nature of captivity among the Jamaican Maroons almost a century before the first slave was documented in the Maroon census records. I conclude that captives in Maroon villages experienced a range of rights and obligations and even those held in chattel-like servitude had mechanisms for social inclusion. These runaways established autonomous communities from which they withstood Spanish, and later English, attempts to re-enslave them.1 On May 10, 1655, the English finally conquered the island of Jamaica from Spanish after a protracted and costly war though they never succeed in subduing the Spanish Maroons. -

A Jamaica, como outras sociedades escravistas do Novo Mundo, produziu fugitivos, e quando esses escravos fugidos estabeleceram comunidades separadas e autônomas de longa duração foram chamados, em inglês, de Maroons e, em português, de quilombolas. O isolamento protegeu os quilombolas jamaicanos da escravidão, mas também os impediu de participar da prosperidade do Império Britânico em expansão. Em 1740, após anos de guerrilha contra a elite colonial, seis grupos quilombolas da ilha assinaram tratados nos quais aceitavam o regime da plantation, optando por usar sua experiência de guerrilha em benefício dos grandes proprietários, e não contra eles. They are also intended as input to further work locally around the 1760 uprisings in Jamaica. My main source is Tacky’s Revolt by Vincent Brown, Professor of African and African American Studies at Harvard University. Harvard University Press, 2020. The short story The plaque is in St Peter’s church, Dorchester. It’s quite prominent on the north wall, straight opposite you when going in the usual entrance. Concern about the plaque is years old, but it was The Coromantee Wars of 1760 David Rhodes 1 brought into focus by the Black Lives Matter movement in May 2020. A campaign of letters and features in the media led to the Parochial Church Council deciding that the plaque would be covered, pending its removal. It will be offered to a museum. The Council agreed to this action without opposition – we were really pushing against an open door, but a door that may not have been pushed open without us. -

The West Indian Mission to West Africa: The Rio Pongas Mission, 1850-1963 by Bakary Gibba A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of History University of Toronto © Copyright by Bakary Gibba (2011) The West Indian Mission to West Africa: The Rio Pongas Mission, 1850-1963 Doctor of Philosophy, 2011 Bakary Gibba Department of History, University of Toronto Abstract This thesis investigates the efforts of the West Indian Church to establish and run a fascinating Mission in an area of West Africa already influenced by Islam or traditional religion. It focuses mainly on the Pongas Mission’s efforts to spread the Gospel but also discusses its missionary hierarchy during the formative years in the Pongas Country between 1855 and 1863, and the period between 1863 and 1873, when efforts were made to consolidate the Mission under black control and supervision. Between 1873 and 1900 when additional Sierra Leonean assistants were hired, relations between them and African-descended West Indian missionaries, as well as between these missionaries and their Eurafrican host chiefs, deteriorated. More efforts were made to consolidate the Pongas Mission amidst greater financial difficulties and increased French influence and restrictive measures against it between 1860 and 1935. These followed an earlier prejudiced policy in the Mission that was strongly influenced by the hierarchical nature of nineteenth-century Barbadian society, which was abandoned only after successive deaths
