This dissertation explores the dramatic and musical presentation of five selected female characters, one from each of Tippett's operas: Sosostris (alto) The Midsummer Marriage (1955); Helen (mezzo-soprano) King Priam (1962); Denise ( dramatic soprano) The Knot Garden (1970); Hannah (rich mezzo) The Ice Break (1977); Jo Ann (lyric soprano) New Year (1989). It is argued that each of the five selected characters portrays Tippett' s inner values of humanitarianism, compassion, integrity and optimism. The dissertation focuses on certain key moments in each opera with an analysis of a central aria. Due to the writer's interest in the performance aspect of these operas, discussion centres on melody, the timbre of voice-types linked with instrumentation, rhythm, word setting and the vexed question of Tippett's libretti. 11 Acknowledgements I would particularly like to acknowledge the assistance and encouragement given to me by my UK supervisor, Dr Claire Seymour. -

Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Over the course of a lifetime that virtually spanned the twentieth century, Sir Michael Tippett, a most unlikely composer and musician, progressed from being the great enigma of British classical music to being one of its most respected and influential figures. His visionary, idealistic humanism informed his compositions, which, while firmly grounded in the traditions of European music, embraced contemporary and popular forms as well. Tippett was, in the words of his partner Meirion Bowen, an "unabashed homosexual," and he defied the social taboos of his time by incorporating homoerotic themes in his operas. Michael Kemp Tippett was born in London on January 2, 1905, and raised in Surrey, where he lived most of his life. Unlike many composers, he was not a child prodigy, and, aside from piano lessons, he had little early involvement with music. In his teens, however, he attended concert performances of Beethoven's symphonies, and as a result of this experience he realized his desire to become a composer. Consequently, he persuaded his parents to support his studies at the Royal College of Music, from which he graduated in 1928. For several years, he taught French in a preparatory school and conducted local musical ensembles. In 1940, he was appointed Director of Music at Morley College in London, a post he retained until 1951. Although Tippett's early compositions had their first public performance in 1930, the work that brought him widespread recognition came a decade later. -

The most important collaborative partners include writers Simon Christmas, Edward Kemp and Nicky Singer; the directors Olivia Fuchs, Clare Whistler, Freddie Wake-Walker and John Fulljames, and the conductors Leo McFall and Nicholas Collon. Signed: MICHAEL GRAHAM Date: 17/04/2017 2 Shakespeare and Modern British Opera: Into The Knot Garden Abstract To date, the scholarly literature has not sufficiently examined the extent to which Shakespeare’s plays helped to develop a national operatic tradition within the ideological context of modern Britain. This thesis is a contribution towards rectifying this oversight. Chapter 1 outlines the development of Shakespearian musicology, and emphasises the importance of music analysis to the elucidation of opera. Chapter 2 then presents a series of short analyses of modern British Shakespeare operas, and highlights how several of these works depict issues of gender and sexuality in a remarkably frank and sometimes subversive fashion. Chapter 3 explains this thesis’s particular focus on Tippett’s The Knot Garden, a psychoanalytic, operatic version of The Tempest from the late 1960s. It posits a number of reasons why both literary scholarship and musicology have overlooked this composer and his Shakespearian work, and explains the pressing requirement for a detailed close reading of Tippett's Tempest opera that simultaneously situates it within broader musical, cultural, and historical narratives. -

Whip (instrument) 1 Whip (instrument) In music, a whip or slapstick is a percussion instrument consisting of two wooden boards joined by a hinge at one end. When the boards are brought together rapidly, the sound is reminiscent of the crack of a whip. It is often used in modern orchestras, bands, and percussion ensembles. There are two types of whips. The first has two planks of wood connected together by a hinge, with a handle on each. The percussionist holds the instrument by the handles and hits the two pieces of wood together, creating a loud whip noise. The other type also has two planks of wood, one longer than the other, with one handle, connected with a spring hinge so it can be played with just one hand, though it cannot produce sounds as loud as a whip requiring both hands. This second type of whip is technically a separate instrument called a slapstick.
