  • A's News Clips, Wednesday, May 5, 2010 Ryan Sweeney Provides
A’s News Clips, Wednesday, May 5, 2010 Ryan Sweeney provides much-needed power to lineup in A's 7-6 win over Texas Rangers By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune Ryan Sweeney routinely gives the A's great defense in right field. He also showed off his home run stroke Tuesday night, and that isn't seen quite as often. Sweeney hit a two-run shot in the first inning and notched a career-high five RBIs to spark the A's to a 7-6 victory over the Texas Rangers in front of 10,135 fans at the Oakland Coliseum. He grounded a two-run single up the middle in the second and drove home another run with a single in the fourth, enjoying the first five-RBI game for an Athletic this season. But Sweeney's biggest contribution may have come in the top of the fifth, when he made a terrific catch in right-center to rob Michael Young of extra bases. The Rangers scored that inning to pull to within 7-5, but they could have done more damage if not for Sweeney's running grab. "That was pretty much ridiculous," A's closer Andrew Bailey said. "That's what he's capable of. I don't know how many RBIs he had. And defensively, you can't replace him." Sweeney drove a 1-1 pitch from Scott Feldman (1-3) over the right-field wall in his first at-bat, snapping a career-long 50- game homerless streak dating back to August of last season.
