Download Chapter (PDF) Sigla Manuscripts here can usually be identified in three ways: by a full RISM siglum and shelf mark, by a short siglum in common use, or by a casual short name. Some sources are too obscure to have the last of these. The sigla defined by RISM (Repertoire internationale des sources musicales) are detailed in RISM-Bibliothekssigel: Gesamtverzeichnis (Munich, I999) and specify coun­ try (in capital letters), city (uppercase after a hyphen), and holding institution (in lowercase). For example, GB-Lbl is Great Britain, London, British Library; US-Cn is the United States, Chicago, Newberry Library. This library siglum is followed by the shelf mark of the manuscript source (often abbreviated to the minimum required to differentiate it from other music manuscripts in the same library). The full expansion of RISM sigla is not given here, merely the decod­ ing of the short sigla. For handy online decoding of RISM sigla, readers are re­ ferred to a resource such as the Digital Image Archive of Medieval Music (www.diamm.ac.uk). Changes in notation in the thirteenth century allowed for musical experimentation in the early fourteenth century. 2. The evidence that tells us that fourteenth-century composers understood that they were doing something different can be found in two treatises: The Ars novae musicae by Jehan de Murs and the Ars nova by Philippe de Vitry. B. Music from Mathematics 1. During the fourteenth century, mathematics expanded beyond the boundaries previously seen in European thought. Music, the discipline so closely coupled with mathematics, followed suit. a. A fourfold system existed for musical time. Each of those listed is a subdivision of the previous: Maximodus, Modus, Tempus, and Prolatio. b. Each of these could be divided into two or three parts. 1) The first two are essentially theoretical concepts, and practical use resided in the latter two. 2) These possibilities yield, in modern terms: 9/8, 3/4; 6/8, 2/4. 2. Not everyone liked the innovations of the Ars nova. a. One example of disapproval is Jacobus de Liege’s Speculum musicae. 1) He dismissed the complexity and innovation as superfluous. C. Wetzel The ars subtilior is a medieval style period marked with a high amount of experimentation and complexity, lying in between the apex of the ars nova and the newer styles of music practiced by the English and the Burgundians in the early fifteenth century. In scholarly accounts summarizing the period, however, musicologists and scholars differ, often greatly, on the precise details that comprise the style. In this thesis, I will take a closer look at the music of the period, with special relevance to the Codex Chantilly (F-CH-564), the main source of music in the ars subtilior style. In doing so, I will create a more exact definition of the style and its characteristics, using more precise language.

Signature: ………………………………………………………….. 3 ABSTRACT The discussion of citation and allusion has become an important area of research in Medieval Studies. The application of postmodern intertextual theories has brought scholars to a deeper understanding of the reuse of borrowed material, shedding new light on a culture of music and literature that was once dismissed as dully repetitive. This thesis builds on this work by examining in depth the manner in which citation and allusion was deployed in the fourteenth- century motet. Motets are a particularly fertile ground for discussion of the reuse of material, drawing as they do on a range of citational techniques such as borrowed liturgical tenors, modelling of rhyme schemes on existing works, and quotation of refrains and authorities. The polyphonic and polytextual nature of the motet enabled composers to juxtapose different registers, languages and genres, and thus to create an array of competing possible interpretations. This study is situated against several strands of recent scholarship.

Acknowledgements My first encounter with the polyphonic fragments which are the subject of this study happened on an afternoon at the Special Collections of the Utrecht University Library. The fragments were presented during a general introduction into the Special Collection’s keepings of music manuscript and fragments. Immediately, I was fascinated by the frag- ments’ formats, notational features, and music and text scripts. That a research project about these fragments would be anything but a simple undertaking was apparent from the very deteriorated state of some of the fragment leaves. Nevertheless, I was eager to delve into them. If only I examined them closely enough, these—at first glance—random assemblies of fragment leaves will reveal more about their genesis and history of use, so I thought. This idea kept me going during the whole process of doing research. That it proved wrong may be a disappoint- ment at first sight but really this is one of the most important insights that I will take with me in my further career.

    5 The fourteenth century elizabeth eva leach Although a famous popular history book’s subtitle glossed the fourteenth century as ‘calamitous’,a consideration of its music would probably see the period as a triumph.1 In part this is because the chief technology that gives us access to the past – writing – became more widely used for record keeping by this time. In particular, the special kind of writing used to record musical sounds – musical notation – reached a new level of prescription, describing relative pitches and rhythms more fully than before. As the fourteenth century paid more cultural attention to writing things down in the first place, more music books survive from this period than from any earlier centuries, and their contents seem tantalizingly decipherable. The detailed social and political history of the fourteenth century is complex and beyond the scope of this chapter. However, some of its aspects will be mentioned here, not in order to give a comprehensive history, but in order to suggest ways in which larger historical changes affected musical culture. The later fourteenth century saw a deep division of the Western Christian church, a problem partly caused by the refusal of successive popes to reside in Rome after the French pope Clement V moved the papal court to Avignon (France) in 1309. The often lavish papal court was responsible for employing a large number of expert singers, many of whom we know to have also been composers because pieces by them survive.2 Avignon was especially important as a centre for musical

    The ars subtilior During the 14th century, a new style of polyphony developed in France. This new style, called ars nova, was characterized by a new system of rhythmic notation allowing the use of duple and triple division of note values, as well as complex syncopations. Around 1370, several composers in Avignon and southern France moved away from the style of the ars nova motet to develop a highly refined and intricate style distinguished by extremely complex rhythmic notation. The new trend soon spread into northern Italy, northern Spain, and as far as Cyprus. In his Tractatus cantus mensurabilis, Philippus de Caserta, one of the composers of the ars nova period, described that later style as an artem magis subtiliter, or a “more subtle art.” Musicologist Ursula Günther was the first, in 1950, to use the term “ars subtilior” to refer that complex musical style, which is the term widely used by musicologists today. Musicologists predating Ursula Günther used different terms to refer to the ars subtilior. Musicologist Willi Apel, for instance, talks about “mannered notation,” or “manneristic style.” Other authors just mention the extreme complexity of the “late ars nova,” with no specific reference to either “manneristic style” or ars subtilior. Once I had identified all sources directly related to the terms ars subtilior or “manneristic style,” I directed my research toward the main primary sources for the ars subtilior: the Chantilly and Modena manuscripts, as well as the Torino manuscript. I also searched sources on Philippus da Caserta, Johannes Ciconia, Matteo da Perugia, Solage, and other composers directly associated with the ars subtilior.
