The American Le- gion Family (Legion, Auxiliary, Sons of The American Legion and Auxiliary Juniors) from Glen Hill Post 287 hosted the event. The veterans enjoyed a great meal along with dessert, courtesy of Mary Goller-Kilts and helpers, and then moved up front to win prizes for their shouts of Bingo! From Seed to Snack Popcorn, like all six types of corn, is a cereal grain. It resembles corn on the cob in appearance and cultivation, but only pop- corn kernels have the ability to pop. Most of the world’s popcorn is grown in the central United States. Popcorn is usually harvested with a combine, which strips the ear from the stalk and shells the kernels from the cob. The kernels are then loaded into a truck and transported to a storage bin for drying. Then, after cleaning and sorting, kernels are packaged for distribution, allowing Americans to consume more than 16 billion quarts of popped popcorn each year.

Be the Referee is a weekly message from the Michigan High School Athletics Association that is designed to help compete in Hamilton Invitational educate people on the rules in different sports, to help them better understand the art of officiating, and to recruit offi- cials. Automatic first downs Today we are going to talk about one of the biggest rule difference areas in high school football from those rules used in college and pro games and that deals with automat- ic first downs. When watching that college game on Saturday or the pro game on Sunday, all of us know there are several defensive fouls that give the offense an automatic first down. How- ever, under high school rules, the opposite is true most of the time. The only high school fouls that result in an automatic first down for the offense are the roughing fouls - roughing the Cedar Springs #2 doubles Ethan Brown and Nick Hibbs. passer, the kicker, the holder and the long snapper. On Wednesday September 9, the Red Hawks competed against Forest Hills Eastern on home courts, which resulted in an 0-8 loss for the Red Hawks. On Saturday September 12, the Red Hawks traveled to Hamilton High School for an invitational. Several of the Ce- dar Springs players had very close sets with their opponents. Red Hawk players finishing in second place were #2 singles Karsen Dingman, #3 singles Drew French, #4 singles Austin Nielsen and #2 doubles Ethan Brown and Nick Hibbs. Over- all the Cedar Springs Red Hawks came in third place com- peting against Coopersville, Hamilton and Coloma schools. “Boys tennis faced some tough competition with a loss to Forest Hills Eastern this week,” noted Coach Katie Un- sworth. “At the Hamilton Invitational #2, #3, #4 singles and #2 doubles all took second place and individual medals. #4 Sessions starting OCTOBER 4 singles Austin Nielsen was well on his way to taking first place overall in his flight when unfortunately during his third match suffered a severe sprained ankle. This injury takes him out for the next two weeks. The boys played well. I would like to compliment Jon Baculy who had some incredible winning shots in his match Saturday! I’d also like to compli- ment Timothy Shovan and Alex Robinson on their tenacity at the net! Way to play guys. We have a talented team and its really quite fun watching all the guys play!” Girls golf results The Cedar Springs Girl’s Golf team competed in the Russ Johnson Invite this past week. Alyssa Keaton shot a 103, Audrie Davis and Michaela Tawney each shot a 117. In another OK Bronze Jamboree at Cedar Chase, the Red Hawks finished 5th, with a team score of 253. Alyssa Keaton shot a 54, Malory Shevock 62, Courtney Pienta 63 and Audrie Davis 74. “The first week of school is always tough,” said Coach London. “We have been improving. We will get it back next week.” Thursday, September 17, 2015 The Cedar Springs Post Page 13

Ladies’ guided pheasantOutdoors hunt set for HuntingBy Dave Robinson prep Oct. 11 in Belding Every year about this time, hunters all across the country head into the woods in search of wild meat and some outdoor adventure. In our area it’s elk, deer, bear and sometimes wild turkey. It is also about this time every year when we read stories of hunters getting lost, stranded, injured, or otherwise more adventure than they bargained for. Having hunted, fished, camped and backpacked a time or two in my life, I have picked up a few lessons about being in the out of doors. First, get your vehicle in shape for where you’re going to be hunting. Many years ago, when I was a Deputy Sheriff, we received a call that a single mom was overdue from an elk hunting trip on State Forest land. The dispatcher took all the pertinent information from the caller and assigned a couple of us to search for the missing hunter. We found her the next morning where she had slid her Oldsmobile sedan off in the ditch and spent the night in her car . (Pre-cell phone days.) She and her four-year-old son had slept in the car and were little the worse for wear. But an Oldsmobile!!? I have no idea what she thought she was going to do with an elk if she actually shot one, but her story is just wrong on several levels. I have often used her story as an example of how to go hunting. Your rig should be fully capable of navigating back roads and in good repair, with good tires, and recently in- Hunting - continues on page 17
