Whoever has won will need our prayers for guidance as our new president assumes office in January. This has been a very difficult election cycle with much acrimony and debasement. Hopefully our society will rise above this and will move forward now in a spirit of reconciliation and collaborative effort. We need to pray that all our civic leaders, president, senators and representatives, will all work together not for the good of their particular party, but for the good of our nation. Very shortly we will begin the season of Advent, the beginning of a new Church year. With this Advent we pray for a renewed spirit of faith and openness to the working of the Holy Spirit in our lives and in our world.

Bernard Rodrigues, SVD Pope Francis has declared an extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy from Dec. 8th, 2015 to Nov. 20th, 2016. The opening words of the Bull of Indiction, Misericordiae Vultus (The face of Mercy), state that Jesus Christ is the “face of the Father's Mercy”. Pope Francis himself explained the reason for declaring a special year of Mercy. He said “At times we are called to gaze even more attentively on Mercy so that we may become a more effective sign of the Father's action in our lives. For this reason I have proclaimed an extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy as a special time for the Church, a time when the witness of believers might grow stronger and more effective” (The Face of Mercy, no. 3) The proclamation of Jubilee is also meant to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the closing of the Second Vatican Council. Jubilee is an opportunity for us to enter into a season of special grace, to encounter God of Mercy and become merciful like the Father. If there is mercy in our hearts, there will be peace in the world. God was introduced to Moses as “a God of Mercy and graciousness, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness” (Ex 34:6). When faced with sin, God responds with fullness of mercy. The life of Jesus is a reflection of God's abounding mercy. The parables of the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the prodigal Son (Lk 15:1-32) are clear examples to illustrate the love, mercy and forgiveness of God.

From such local migrating species as spot-billed pelican, Oriental darter and black-headed ibis to long-distance migratory birds like ferruginous pochard, Eurasian curlew, Asian dowitcher and the near-threatened river tern - the lake turns into a haven for ornithologists, naturalists and photographers alike. In this harvest festival, families prepare pongal (a dish of rice and milk) in beautifully coloured earthen pots, where grains from the year’s harvest are used. In Tamil Nadu, the festivities span four days - on the first day, homes are painted afresh followed by the preparation of pongal on the second. On the third day (Mattu Pongal), farm animals are worshipped. It concludes with Kannum Pongal (fourth day) when families meet with relatives.
