Introduction This report summarises the findings of the fourth regional benchmarking survey of North West museums, covering the period 2018-19. The survey was carried out to gain a picture of the state of the regional museums sector at the present time and to track any changes and trends from the previous surveys. For the 2017-18 survey Museum Development North West (MDNW) commissioned South West Museum Development (SWMD) to carry out both the data collection and the reporting. For this survey, SWMD carried out the data collection, MDNW analysed and reported on the data. An online survey was sent to all 148 Accredited museums and museums officially working towards Accreditation in the North West, as recognised by Arts Council England (ACE) in June 2019. The return rate was 45%. The sections in the survey were: 1) Museums 2) Audiences 3) Resources (finance, staff and volunteers) For MDNW’s first two surveys, covering 2012 to 2016, there were also questions about collections and access to training, plus a flexible section which changed each year to give a snapshot of a specific issue. Since 2018 each of the English museum development regions has been using the same survey to allow national comparisons, and so these sections have been removed to bring MDNW’s survey in line with other regions.

This major new exhibition allows us to experience the ancient Egyptians at their most spectacular and at their most intimate, uncovering a civilisation fascinated by appearance and identity both in life and death. Rare surviving imagery on exquisite painted coffins, decorated funerary masks, delicate figurines and beautifully carved reliefs emphasise the importance of body image. Meanwhile jewellery, mirrors, hairpins, scent bottles and makeup provide an insight into some surprisingly familiar daily routines and the ever changing styles of the time. Through artefacts spanning over four millennia, from 3,500 B.C. to 400 A.D., the viewer is invited to ask why Egyptians cared so much about transforming the way they looked and how our perceptions are influenced by the objects they left behind. Beyond Beauty is created by the Bulldog Trust in partnership with 7 museums from across the country. Many of the artefacts on display come from the same archaeological excavations, and are seen together collectively for the first time since their discovery by pioneering Victorian Egyptologists.

Page 2 Summary The Centre for Applied Archaeology (CfAA), were commissioned by Mr Patrick Bride to undertake an archaeological excavation at the site of Newbold Hall, Rochdale, Greater Manchester centred on NGR SD913 134. The works exposed and recorded all surviving archaeological remains within the proposed development area and a number of selective intrusive test trenches were excavated across the site identifying that a substantial part of the hall’s external and internal footprint had survived below the present ground surface. As a result the CfAA can conclude that there were substantial surviving remains of Newbold Hall’s northern and central wings and front, cobbled, courtyard that can be classed as significant.
