In Australia the musical is currently playing at Melbourne’s Her Majesty’s Theatre where it premiered in February 2018 and continues to move, inspire and entertain audiences night after night. Long before she was Carole King, the chart-topping music legend, she was an ordinary girl with extraordinary talent. She sold her first hit, Will You Love Me Tomorrow, at just 17. By the time she was 20 she was writing number ones for the biggest acts in rock ‘n’ roll, including The Drifters, The Shirelles and Aretha Franklin. But it wasn’t until her personal life began to crack that she finally found her own voice and stepped into the spotlight. “I LAUGHED, I CRIED, I SANG, I DANCED… EVERYTHING A GIRL WANTS FROM A NIGHT OUT!” 3AW “ESTHER HANNAFORD IS ABSOLUTELY PERFECT” Broadway World “OUTSTANDING, A SUPERSTAR” Channel Nine “CONVINCING AND EFFORTLESS” Sydney Morning Herald “A HEART-RENDING PERFORMANCE” Limelight “SHE IS A REVELATION” The Guardian In celebration of the Australian premiere of Beautiful, Sony Music Entertainment Australia has released a brand new tribute record, BEAUTIFUL – A TRIBUTE TO CAROLE KING. • Reflections of the Class of 1971
Reflections of the Class of 1971 By Tom Lashnits ‘71 It was a turbulent time. The Vietnam War. The Draft Lottery. Black Power. Women’s Lib, Kent State. And Closing Down the College And the personal recollections . During our four years, the Protest Tree was filled with signs and comments about the pros and cons of coeducation (and a lot of other issues like the Vietnam War.) The Class of 1971 was the first in the 200+ year history of the college to truly enjoy the benefits of co-education, beginning in our Junior Year. It was approved by the Board of Trustees and in the Fall of 1969, about 100 women showed up on campus and lived in Marshall Hall. Approximately 40 women graduated in our class. The odds on campus were 18 men to 1 woman and there would often be only one woman in a class! Lots of adjustments were made to the physical buildings, rules and policies, social atmosphere, extra-curricular groups, and the dating scene (Little Sisters initiated into Phi Sigma Kappa). How many of us studied, or napped, on the comfortable couches in the Reading Room of Fackenthal Library? Ray Zuschlag took freshman Bio (an 8:00 a.m. class!) and learned the genus and species name of every tree on campus by Dr. Shively reciting the names of all trees passed during periodic walking tours throughout campus. History classes with Dr. Thurman (Pall Mall) Philoon, an entertaining lecturer who did amazing things with his Phi Beta Kappa key. Prof. Robert Russell died recently.

  • ANN HAMPTON CALLAWAY - Biography
ANN HAMPTON CALLAWAY - Biography ANN HAMPTON CALLAWAY is one of the finest singer/songwriters of our generation. The statuesque performer dazzles music lovers as a singer, pianist, composer, lyricist, arranger, actress, and educator. Her talents have made her equally at home in jazz and pop as well as on stage, in the recording studio, on TV and in film. She is best known for starring in the hit Broadway musical "SWING!" and for writing and singing the theme to the internationally successful TV series,” THE NANNY". Ann is a devoted keeper-of-the-flame of the great American songbook. She brings fresh and original interpretations to these timeless classics and works to uphold the canon by writing songs with Cole Porter, Carole King, Barbara Carroll and others. Her spontaneity, intelligence, and soulful charisma have won her a diverse fan-base including notables as Barbra Streisand, Clive Davis, Carly Simon and Wynton Marsalis. The New York Times writes, “For sheer vocal beauty, no contemporary singer matches Ms. Callaway.” Ann attributes her voice and love of music to her mother, Shirley, who throughout her childhood sang and played torch songs, Gershwin and German lieder at the piano. Of the uniquely musical household she says, “I didn’t know it at the time, but we were sort of the Von Trapp family of Chicago.” After a music teacher discovered her unusually mature soprano voice, Ann was encouraged to study classically, honing the pitch-perfect control and expressive three octave range she is known for. While her voice teachers suggested she could have a career in opera, Ann eventually realized that she would be happier singing the music she most loved.

  • Ruth Frankel Professor Swedberg CAS WS214 May 2, 2013 Carole
Ruth Frankel Professor Swedberg CAS WS214 May 2, 2013 Carole King: A Consequential Female Artist in Achievement and Message Carole King, a Brooklyn born singersongwriter, most associated with the music of the 1960s and 1970s, is significant in that she, according to her biographer James Perone, “almost singlehandedly opened the doors of popular music songwriting to women” (1). She also became the first female artist in American popular music in complete control of her own work. Her writing was prolific. She has written 500 copyrighted songs throughout her career and has had tremendous commercial success (Havranek 236). King’s greatest success was the release of the 1973 album Tapestry, which remained on the charts for 302 weeks (Perone 6). Though her cultural impact is often underappreciated, Carole King has been an important contributor to advancement of women in the music industry and a positive role model to the female audiences of her generation. It is even hard to find academic sources reflecting the success and cultural attributions of King. Overall, it appears that sexism has faded the memory of Carole King’s contribution to women in music. Again and again, King impact has not been recognized or remembered. For example, in the book Go, Girl, Go!: The Women’s Revolution in Music by James Dickerson, King’s name is mentioned only once. Dickerson writes, “Carly Simon and Carole King were the two most successful singersongwriters of the decade, and of the two, it was Carly who was dazzling the world with her toothy smile and sexy album covers” (77).

Plenary: Songwriter Session – Don’t Just Tap Your Foot, Tap Your Creativity Presented By: Gary Burr Musician, Songwriter, Producer Nashville, TN Don Henry Singer, Songwriter Nashville, TN Jim Phtoglo Singer, Songwriter Nashville, TN Victoria Shaw Singer, Songwriter Nashville, TN Presented at: ACLEA 53rd Mid-Year Meeting January 28th – January 31st, 2017 Nashville, Tennessee Gary Burr Musician, Songwriter, Producer Nashville, TN “…But the guitarist always writes the songs…” That’s what they said in Gary’s first band. So, following in the footsteps of his heroes John Lennon and Roger McGuinn, a writer was born. After years of hard work and hard writing, he got his first break in 1982 with Juice Newton’s “Love’s Been a Little Bit Hard on Me.” With a hit under his belt he started writing in earnest, getting cuts from such talents as the Oak Ridge Boys and Conway Twitty. After a brief time on a solo career and album, Gary took over for Vince Gill as the lead‐singer for the band Pure Prairie League. In the late 80’s, feeling that he’d done all he can from Connecticut, Gary decided to move to Nashville, and a better move is hard to make. It didn’t take long for Gary to become one of Country Music’s most sought‐after writers, having hits with Randy Travis, Reba McEntire, Patty Loveless, Garth Brooks, and many more. Burr has been awarded ‘Songwriter of the Year’ on three separate occasions by three different organizations: Billboard, Nashville Songwriter’s Association International, and ASCAP and has written 14 Number One songs.
