SHORTLIST 2013 Young Director Award 2013 by CFP-E & Shots Young directors, the most inspirational creative source. After zoos. PREFACE The visual language of today’s consumers has also changed – we yearn for edgier, cle- verer and more relevant moving imagery like no other time in history. It is a golden age for commercial film-making and subsequently the producers’ role in discovering and nur- turing new directing talent is even more vital. It is YDA’s honour and commitment to create more opportunities for producers to source young directors by showcasing and tracking their new work online throughout the year – leading up to our spectacular show in Cannes each June where we show off the very best. It’s such a pleasure to be part of this era when film-making by young directors is simply getting better, smarter, more relevant and ever more exciting. Merci and best wishes» «This year is our 15th anniversary since we Francois Chilot launched YDA - the only award dedicated President Young Director Award to rising young directors. For their latest, Exile invited NY-based artist and publisher (of the cult magazine, Straight To Hell) ,Billy Miller, to put together two concurrent shows. One, titled 'Lost Horizon', is inspired by the iconic novel and film of the same name, explores American Western archetypes through the lens of loss, while the second, 'Head Shop', owes its conceptual roots to legendary bohemian boutiques like London's Granny Takes a Trip, offering a crowded 'selling floor' full of work that explores the rich possibilities of the mind. Originalveröffentlichung in: Keazor, Henry ; Wübbena, Thorsten (Hrsgg.): Rewind, play, fast forward : the past, present and future of the music video, Bielefeld 2010, S. 7-31 Rewind - Play - Fast Forward The Past, Present and Future of the Music Video: Introduction HENRY KEAZOR/THORSTEN WUBBENA "Art presses the "Stop"- and "Rewind"- buttons in the stream of life: It makes time stop. It offers reflection and re collection, it is an antidote against lost certitudes."1 Like perhaps no other medium, the music video clip is marking and shap ing our everyday culture: film, art, literature, advertisements they all are clearly under the impact of the music video in their aesthetics, their technical procedures, visual worlds or narrative strategies. The reason for this has not only to be sought in the fact that some of the video di rectors are now venturing into art or advertisement, but that also peo ple not working in the field of producing video clips are indebted to this medium.2 Thus, more or less former video clipdirectors such as Chris Cunningham or Jonas Akerlund have established themselves successfully with their creations which very often are based on ideas and concepts, originally developed for earlier music videos: both Cunningham's works Flex and Monkey Drummer, commissioned in 2000 respectively 2001 by the Anthony d'Offay Gallery, evolved out of his earlier music videos.' Flex relies on the fantastic and weightless underwater cosmos Cunningham designed for the images that accompanied Portishead's Only you in 1998. Monkey Drummer* is heavily based on the soundtrack written by the Irish musician Aphex Twin (Richard David James) for whom Cunningham had previously directed famous videos such as Come to Daddy (1997) and Win- dowlicker (1999).

  • Another Olympics Is Over for Wrestling by Olympic Champion John Peterson #42
Another Olympics is over for Wrestling By Olympic Champion John Peterson #42 The excitement is over, another Olympics is history. There were some great matches! Mindorashivili, of Georgia, pinning Russia’s returning World Champion, Georgy Ketoev, at 84kg. in the semi-finals caught my attention. Actually Ketoev is a Georgian, born in Tbilisi. With a war going on back home that had to have been an interesting match up! Athens champion, Taymazov, Uzbekistan became heavy weight champion again! He proved that he is the true champion by defeating Russian 2000 Olympic Champion David Mussulbes, now wrestling for Slovakia in the semi-finals and in the finals Russian Akhmedov, who beat last year’s World Champion to make the Russian Olympic team. They all are from the same area of the Caucuses. And what can you say about Buvaysa Saytiev? He won the World’s as a 19 year old in Atlanta. He joins the all time greats by winning his third Olympic Gold to go with his 6 World titles. That tall thin body proves again that anybody can win on the mat! Thank you Tony Black for helping us navigate through the system to be on the right mat at the right time. For those of us who are “computer challenged”, you made it easier to handle. I proved that I am still a wrestling fanatic by getting up at 3:30 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. to watch some of the wrestle-backs and finals. And how about Henry? Congratulations Henry Cejudo! Welcome to the club of Olympic champions! Thank you Terry Brands for pouring yourself into coaching in the same way you did as an athlete.

  • Grant Singer on Making Music Videos
April 3, 2017 - Grant Singer is a filmmaker and music video director based in Los Angeles. Over the past five years he's worked with Lorde, Ariel Pink, Sky Ferreira, Taylor Swift, and the Weeknd, among others. As told to T. Cole Rachel, 1703 words. Tags: Film, Music, Inspiration, Process, Beginnings. Grant Singer on making music videos In the last couple of years you’ve directed videos for Taylor Swift, The Weeknd, Ariana Grande, and Lorde. Are you someone who grew up watching a lot of music videos? My first memories as a human being are specifically watching music videos in my parents’ garage. I remember the Warrant “Cherry Pie” video stuck out to me when I was four of five years old, and then Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun” video and Soul Asylum’s “Runaway Train” video. When I was a little bit older I was introduced to Mark Romanek’s Nine Inch Nails videos as well as Chris Cunningham’s work. Music videos, for sure, influenced me when I was younger, but I never thought I’d grow up and direct music videos. If I had seen a psychic years ago who said, “In 10 years you’ll be directing music videos,” I wouldn’t have believed her. It was never an aspiration that I had. When I went to college, my first year, I studied music and I wanted to compose music for film. It wasn’t until a little later that I realized I wanted to direct the films, not just do the music. From that point on, my focus was directing, but I never thought I’d direct music videos until I was in my 20s.

BFI AND AARDMAN ANIMATIONS LAUNCH PARTNERSHIP TO DEVELOP NEW ANIMATION FEATURE FILMS The BFI Aardman Animation Development Lab to support animated feature film projects BFI Aardman Animation Development Lab to offer support and professional, hands-on experience to emerging talent with a passion for creating animated family films LONDON – Friday 3 October 2014. The BFI is partnering with Aardman Animations, a world leader in stop-frame and CGI animated filmmaking and creators of Wallace & Gromit and Shaun The Sheep, in launching a new scheme today backed by £1 million of Lottery funding to help support the development and production of new animated feature films and the creative talent making them. The BFI will provide funding for up to two years, to three filmmakers or filmmaker teams (writers, directors, producers) to develop their projects with dedicated development support through The BFI Aardman Animation Development Lab. The process for developing animated feature films is lengthy and expensive limiting the opportunities for British filmmakers. Aardman will work with the filmmakers – animators, writers, directors, producers – to shape their ideas with the aim of emerging with a set of ‘greenlight’ materials for their films, ready to advance to production. The closing date for applications is Friday 28 November 2014. Ben Roberts, Director of the BFI Film Fund says, "The beauty of animated features lies in their ability to combine great artistry with commercial ambition. This all comes at a cost, and so the development opportunities are limited. Tapping into that Aardman brain to work in depth on a small number of carefully chosen projects from promising filmmakers, is a great opportunity for us to move some exciting and commercially appealing work closer to a reality." Peter Lord, Co-founder of Aardman Animations says, "Feature animation is the ideal medium for filmmakers.
