These informative signs will soon be seen on the Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge. Our local Refuge is one of the last of the 561 National Wildlife Refuges to close its gates after dark. This night-time closure provides the wildlife with a recuperative time from steady vehicular traffic and human visitation. The result will be a higher quality wildlife viewing experience to Refuge visitors. Night closures also simplify our law enforcement and emergency response efforts and costs. Special use permits can also be applied for by the public for activities that require access to the refuge during closed hours. Open hours will be longer during hunting seasons. In Dixie County, the Dixie Mainline and the Willey Locker Mainline, will remain open for through traffic. Shired Island will be open for boat traffic while refuge lands will be closed. The large number of tires stacked in the yard of a Jacksonville residential property was the subject of several complaints and resulted in two men being charged with maintaining a waste-tire site without proper permits and creating a public health hazard. Curt Douglas Hatton, 46, of Jacksonville and Richard Allen Evans, 46, of Mayo were using their property on Rogero Road to store waste tires, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) investigators. “The two men operate RL & C Services, LLC, reselling and disposing of used tires,” said FWC Investigator Bennie Radcliff. “The FWC worked with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Environmental Protection on the complaint,” Radcliff noted. During an inspection of the property, investigators discovered the large number of tires being stored there as well as quite a bit of mosquito activity. “We notified Jacksonville Mosquito Control and the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department of the situation,” said Radcliff. “A burn barrel was found in the middle of the tires, and the two men were warned about the dangers of any type of fire near waste tires.” Hatton and Evans were given a notice to appear in court for maintaining a waste-tire site in excess of 1,500 tires without the proper permits and creating a public health hazard for the mosquito activity at the property. “We will also be conducting a follow-up inspection to ensure that the tires have been removed and properly disposed of at a permitted waste-tire processing facility,” Radcliff said. The tradition of excellence continues at Williston Elementary School! Linda Piper, coordinator of the 27th Annual Hoggetowne Medieval Faire, recently notified WES principal Marla Hiers that 15 students had placed in the Student Art and Essay Contest. “We were so excited to learn that, once more, our WES students had excelled, doing something that was fun and educational at the same time,” said Hiers. Art entries could be either two-dimensional such as paintings or drawings or three-dimensional such as swords, shields and catapults. The essay topics ranged from King Arthur to medieval medicines and disease to a “create your own” category. The Faire’s theme this year is “In the days of Camelot.” Second and 3rd graders are judged as one group while 4th and 5th graders are judged separately. In the essay category, 5th grader Tyler Roberts (Punch and Judy) and 4th grader Trinity Peacock (medicine and disease during the Middle Ages) both placed 2nd. Placing 1st in the 2-D category was 5th grader Riley Battle (colored drawing of a medieval church). Taking home 2nd place awards were 5th graders Katlynn Karwan (drawing of a dragon) and 4th grader Adam Sistrunk (colored drawing of the Robinson coat of arms). Seemingly the most popular category, 3-D art, had the most winners; 11 students received awards: 1st place, 5th grader Everett Warren (battering ram); 1st place, 4th grader Taylor McDaniel (diorama of the Lady of the Lake story); 2nd place, 3rd grader Bailey Francis (bow and quiver with arrows); 2nd place, 4th grader Anthony Griffith (bejeweled coat of arms); 2nd place, 4th grader Maclayne McGowan (medieval stables); 2nd place, 5th grader Tyler Roberts (Punch and Judy puppet show); A group of 4th graders in the Enhanced Learning Program (ELP) at Williston Elementary School hold up their 3rd place, 3rd grader Regan Sapp (castle) ; 3rd place 5th grader creations which will be entered in the 27th Annual Hoggetowne Medieval Faire Student Art and Essay Contest.
