The subsequent development of civil aviation policy including the regulation of civil aviation, the management of a civil aerodrome and the possible start of a state sponsored civil air service to Britain or elsewhere is also explained. Michael Collins’ leading role in the establishment of a small Military Air Service in 1922 and the role of that service in the early weeks of the Civil War are examined in detail. The modest expansion in the resources and role of the Air Service following Collins’ death is examined in the context of antipathy toward the ex-RAF pilots and the general indifference of the new Army leadership to military aviation. The survival of military aviation - the Army Air Corps - will be examined in the context of the parsimony of Finance, and the administrative traumas of demobilisation, the Anny mutiny and reorganisation processes of 1923/24.     ELECTRONIC WARFARE FUNDAMENTALS NOVEMBER 2000 PREFACE Electronic Warfare Fundamentals is a student supplementary text and reference book that provides the foundation for understanding the basic concepts underlying electronic warfare (EW). This text uses a practical building-block approach to facilitate student comprehension of the essential subject matter associated with the combat applications of EW. Since radar and infrared (IR) weapons systems present the greatest threat to air operations on today's battlefield, this text emphasizes radar and IR theory and countermeasures. Although command and control (C2) systems play a vital role in modern warfare, these systems are not a direct threat to the aircrew and hence are not discussed in this book. This text does address the specific types of radar systems most likely to be associated with a modern integrated air defense system (lADS). To introduce the reader to EW, Electronic Warfare Fundamentals begins with a brief history of radar, an overview of radar capabilities, and a brief introduction to the threat systems associated with a typical lADS. The two subsequent chapters introduce the theory and characteristics of radio frequency (RF) energy as it relates to radar operations. These are followed by radar signal characteristics, radar system components, and radar target discrimination capabilities. The book continues with a discussion of antenna types and scans, target tracking, and missile guidance techniques. Since I joined the Irish Air Corps in 1999 aircraft have been replaced effectively on a like for like basis in terms of numbers albeit in some instances with a capability change commensurate with developing aviation technology, Marchetti SF260 to Pilatus PC9, Cessna 172 to Pilatus PC12, Gazelle to EC135, Dauphin to AW139, Casa CN235 to Casa Cn295, Kingair 200 to Learjet 45, Squirrel to EC135. Where capability has taken a leap forward this has been as a direct result of innovative purchasing on the part of the IAC management in specifying aircraft with greater capability during the replacement program. In the same period IAC have retired the Gulfstream GIV and as a result the IAC/State has lost the capability to project itself across the globe at short notice. All aircraft within the fleet have historically multi tasked being purchased for one mission in mind but in practise being utilised to their maximum capability in a number or varied roles. For instance, Casa CN235 maritime patrol aircraft being used for – Air Ambulance, Parachute operations, ARW ops, Wildlife surgery’s, C2 aircraft, With that in mind lets examine the capabilities that should be replaced and enhanced over the coming years.

    Medium Support Helicopter Aircrew Training Facility (MSHATF) Introduction to CAE’s MSHATF The Medium Support Helicopter Aircrew Training Facility (MSHATF) was developed by CAE in partnership with the UK Ministry of Defence. Responsible for the design, construction and financing of the facility that opened in 1999, CAE operates the MSHATF under a 40-year private finance initiative (PFI) contract. CAE’s MSHATF is delivering the total spectrum of synthetic aircrew training demanded by the UK Joint Helicopter Command Support Helicopter Force. The turnkey training program includes academic classroom training and simulator training delivered by experienced instructors. The MSHATF is equipped with six full-mission simulators configured for CH-47 Chinook, AW101 Merlin and Puma helicopters. Under the terms of its PFI contract, CAE also has the ability to provide turnkey training to third-party users. This enables approved military and civil operators across the globe to take advantage of the advanced simulation, training and mission rehearsal capability at the MSHATF on a highly cost-effective basis. Other NATO nations and wider alliances also regard the MSHATF as part of their normal training regime. For example, Royal Netherlands Air Force Chinook crews routinely train alongside their Royal Air Force (RAF) counterparts before operational deployments. In addition, Royal Navy crews operating the UK Merlin and other operators of the AW101 helicopter such as the Royal Canadian Air Force, Royal Danish Air Force, and Portuguese Air Force use the advanced Merlin simulators for a range of training applications, including battlefield and search and rescue (SAR) roles. The MSHATF also offers Puma helicopter training where the customer base includes the RAF and several Middle Eastern customers.
