04. Introduction to Li-ion Batteries
The Li-ion battery is the fastest growing battery in the rechargeable battery market. These batteries are commonly used in electronic devices such as laptops, smartphones, notebooks, and tablets because of their high-energy density and high charge/discharge rate capacity. Li- ion batteries consist of one or more generating compartments called cells. Each cell comprises three components: a positive electrode (cathode), negative electrode (anode), and an electrolyte. During charging, Li-ions from the cathode move to the anode. The battery stores energy during this process. When the battery is discharging, Li-ions move back across the electrolyte to the cathode. During charging and discharging, electrons flow around the outer circuits but do not pass through the electrolyte, as it acts as an insulating barrier.
