Overview  Windows 8 is not an update. It is a comppyletely new .  It’s a bi‐modal system: ARM (Windows RT) and Intel (Windows 8). The two are NOT COMPATIBLE.  There are four versions for different uses.  The Five Charms are Search, Share, Start, Devices and .  Its four building blocks are the start screen, charms, apps, and the .  It was optimized for use with a touch‐screen monitor.

Four Versions  Windows 8 RT . Sold on tablets and phones with the ARM processor. This version won’t run standddard Wind ows applicat ions on its DkDesktop wihith the exception of a few provide d by Microsoft. New Apps sold in the Microsoft Store.

 Windows 8. Conventional Windows, and the cheapest upgrade path. Windows 8 interface but also the Win7 desktop minus a Start button. Most of the applications that run on will continue to work on Windows 8.

 Windows 8 Pro. Same as Windows 8, but slightly more expensive. Includes all of the Win8 features, and also BitLocker, BitLockerToGo, Client Hyper‐V,, Domain JJ,oin, Encrypting , , Remote Desktop(host), Boot from VHD.

 Windows 8 Enterprise. For volume licensees only.

Charms Search. Search for anything. You can search just the app you're in (like finding a specific message in ),), search another app (look up something on the Internet),), or you can search your entire PC (for an app, setting, or file).

Share. Share files and info with you know or send info to another app, without leaving the app you're in. You can email photos to your mom, update your Facebook status, or send a link to your note–taking app.

Start. Get to your Start screen. Or if you're already on Start, you can use this charm to go back to the last app you were in.

DiDevices. Use all of the didevices that are connected to your PC, bhboth widired and wiilreless. You can print from an app, sync with , or stream your latest home movie to your TV.

Settings. Change settings for apps and your PC. You'll find settings, help, and info for the app you're in, plus common PC settings—network connection, volume, brightness, notifications, power, and keyboard. These PC settings are the same no matter where you are in Windows, but the app settings are different in every app. You can also change settings for your PC when you select Change PC settings. It's where you change your lock screen picture, manage notifications, and more.

Managing the Apps  Most applications from Win7 will run under Win8…but not necessarily the 32‐bit versions.  Windows Store Apps are different than Windows Desktop Apps.  Applications may be purchased through the Windows Store.  People, Email and come with the system.  To get down to work, click on the Desktop Icon, which looks suspiciously like Win7 without the Start Button, , etc.

Deploying Windows 8  Now is not the time to deploy Windows 8.  Make use of the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant at http://windows.microsoft.com/en‐US/windows‐ 8/upgrade‐to‐windows‐8  Make use of Windows 8 System Requirements at http://windows.microsoft.com/en‐US/windows‐ 8/system‐requirements  TCO is the most critical aspect. Pay attention to the training costs and learning curve.
