4 There was a definite theme to the Easter Sunday morning CRoW as it aimed to bring one and all up to date on a few actions and related decisions along a specific route around our glorious Public Rights of Way (PRoW). So, with a bit of sunshine and a lovely mix of 22 people and two four legged friends, of all ages - some of whom were just visiting the area - we set off along Falmouth Road for a goodly 4-miler! Out and onto the High Street towards the bridleway opposite Buckingham Nip (301/49/1), we paused for a moment to brief the party on the Parish Council’s recent decision to risk assess the entrance. The consequence of this action will be to install a horse gate about 3 metres up the Lane towards Anzac Cottage in view of the clear dangers associated with bike users, in particular, emerging out onto our very busy High Street – a decision that was clearly understood by all present. On and up past Anzac Cottage where we transited along 301/49/2 and 1, John Peck interjected with some timely and very informative bits of local history and geography; initially relating to the name of his house and then the nearby quarry and shafts leading down to the County Adit. Emerging out onto Cox Hill opposite Thornleigh Cottage, out came the plastic bags for a swift litter pick along the road leading towards Tractors. Sadly, because it reflects currently unwanted trend, we P.T.O.

5 managed to fill 3 large bags in no time, which Roger Wright- Morris kindly picked up and disposed of later. Off road again, we picked up 301/13/2 just past Truro Tractors and passed the magnificent Unity Mine engines near Wheal Bush House before descending to overlook the area of Tolgullow below and beyond the parish boundary, which is currently causing a bit of an issue, due to what seems excessive landfill and poor management of Japanese Knotweed. More or less turning back on ourselves as we entered Unity Wood, the opportunity was taken to brief the party on the intended benefits of coppicing but negative consequences of poor communications associated with such tasking, which can admittedly look quite devastating and is shown in the picture below.

This rather interesting shot of the CRoW in Unity Wood, clearly shows some looking the other way? This is because we were almost immediately facing several off-road bikers who, when approached with a friendly group of walkers, immediately turned tail and went for a swift exit in the opposite direction. Curious as to why these “innocents” might be so quick to be on their merry way, without so much as a hello on a brisk Easter

6 Sunday, it wasn’t long before we realised why; for they had clearly been practising their ‘crop circling’ techniques on the grass at the foot of our famous Killifreth Mine. What a shame, especially as other – slightly more considerate – people actually like to picnic at this iconic site on occasion!

How apt the phrase, “…..for they know not what they do”.

Putting both incidents behind us, the walking group headed out of Unity Wood and along 301/16/1 and 2, over the road and on towards Great where we debated the perennial question: “What can be done about this area?” especially given the scarring of the landscape resulting from almost continuous fly-tipping. Well, recent dialogue with Tregothnan Estates confirms that attempts are being made at trying to fund some form of refurbishment plan for the Old Smithy and that the good people of Boscawen Farm may be looking to use aspects of the Engine House. We will obviously have to see what comes over time because this iconic scheduled monument deserves better, as indeed do the people who live nearby. Leaving the Wheal Busy site and along 301/33/1 which took us past Hillside Farm to the left, we treaded carefully back P.T.O.

7 down into the village once more, along this now heavily pot holed un-adopted road, just as the weather was taking a slight turn for the worse. A hearty and informative bit of exercise on a fresh Easter morn, we eventually returned to the car park by 11.30.am, by which time we were all considering an afternoon in front of the fire. The starts from the Car Park at on Sunday by which time the 3 Chacewater Mining Trails will hopefully feature on the website.

10 Despite the trials and tribulations of this season where we had, unfortunately, to withdraw both football teams from the local Trelawny League, the Club Committee have decided that they wish for the Club to once again be on the football map. To that end, we are having our Annual General Meeting on Monday,4th June at Chacewater Recreation Ground Pavilion and should you feel that you may wish to be involved with the Club next season or have some ideas to improve matters, please feel free to attend. Following our AGM, we still have to be accepted back into the Trelawny League and that will be the subject of a vote by the other member clubs at the League AGM later that month. Fingers crossed that the Club can rise like a "phoenix from the ashes" of this season. Nigel Jewell

11 12 The next meeting of the Kernow Microscopical Society will be on Saturday May 19th in the Killifreth room at Chacewater village hall at 1.30pm. We shall be making permanent slides of tree pollens with the aim of making a reference collection of native tree pollens. Interested? Do come along. Maybe you will discover a new hobby! You don't need to own a microscope, just an interest to discover more about our microscopical world. Our meetings focus on the practical aspects of microscopy; using microscopes and exploring methods of preparing specimen slides to view. Our members include professional microscopists who can assist with queries on instruments and microscopical techniques. In March we had a very illuminating introductory talk on the nature of mosses and their identification. We are currently actively searching for new members and would be very happy to welcome you. Have a look at our 2018 events diary at http://kernowmicroscopy.webplus.net to see our meetings for the coming year. You can also email us at [email protected]. We look forward to welcoming more of you to our meetings. Pat Woodward Publicity Officer

14 15 16 Performing Arts students who specialise in Acting at Truro College are performing at Chacewater Village Hall on Friday 18th May at 7.30pm. The show has been devised using the bicentennial of the publication of the novel Frankenstein as inspiration; exploring the life of its author, Mary Shelley, the themes and key moments of the novel itself and themes which still resonate today and in the literature of Science Fiction. The students have taken inspiration from Kneehigh Theatre Company for the style of their performance and are bringing an Mary Shelley 1797 - 1851 entertaining as well as thought-provoking and touching play out of the college for the general public to see. This is the students’ final performance, they are at the end of their two year course. Four of the students have received offers from Drama Schools, others have been offered places at the universities of Bristol, Exeter, Kent, Royal Holloway, UCLAN and Bath spa. In a world where the Arts are slowly being squeezed out of the curriculum, the students wanted to bring their show out on tour to show everyone what studying Performing Arts can do for a young person; please come along and support the show. The performance is free, lasts for approximately 80 minutes and is suitable for children over 12. Kit Savage

20 Dear Reader

Last week as I write we held our Chacewater Projects Committee A G M and we were able to thank Mrs Sue Murley for being our Secretary for a couple of years. I am delighted to be able to report that following her resignation that the committee appointed Mr Paul Shevlin as our new secretary. Now with Paul on board, Brenda Bailey continuing as our treasurer and myself as Chairman, we now have officers in place to keep the Projects Team running for a further year. So the various village events that have established themselves in Chacewater can continue; such Projects as the planting and watering of our hanging baskets and other features. In fact, Paul has already ordered all the plants required from Chacewater Garden Centre. Also, the committee, along with the Parish Council, are planning the 2018 Bonfire and Fireworks night. ,To all the residents of Chacewater thank you for your help and support with all the events that are organised, without this support they would not take place. Not in Chacewater Parish but in not far from Threemilestone a proposal that will affect the village is the matter of the Stadium for Cornwall or “Sportva Kernow”. and all its 123 members were given the opportunity to vote for or against this proposal today (as I write). There were 117 elected Members present and the votes counted were 69 in favour of the proposal that Cornwall Council would put £3 million pounds of public money into this project, 41 voted against the proposal and there were 7 Member who abstained. I voted against the proposal on the grounds that: the local people, in the majority, were against the proposal on the grounds of the traffic levels on the A390 as the road is already too heavily congested; P.T.O.

21 that the effluent would be stored in a large tank and pumped out by tankers - although the supporters would not explain how it was to be disposed of, but I assumed then spread on agricultural land which I found totally unacceptable on the grounds of smell and the fly population. I was also concerned that if the tank failed all the effluent would seep into the River Kenwyn and end up in Victoria Square in Truro and the consequences of that did not bear thinking about. when the original planning permission was given to the site, Cornwall Council overwhelmingly voted that the permission would only be granted if there was to public money put into the project and this proposal was contrary to that council decision. I would have been in favour of a Stadium for Cornwall if it was situated in a more central location for our county, have better public transport access and was self-funding. The next stage, before the project can be started is for another £3 million to be granted from the Chancellor of the Exchequer in his autumn statement. Please keep me informed and as always if I have missed anything in your immediate area or if I can be of any help or support please do not hesitate to contact me.

24 A good deal of progress has been made throughout the past month in putting the finishing touches to the Local Landscape Character Assessment (LLCA), which will soon be available in hard copy and placed on the Neighbourhood Development Plan (NDP) section of the Village website over the coming weeks. So, if you wish to know more about your local landscape, then this is the document for you. The NDP Team have also spent many hours in dark rooms working up the various Policies, Sustainability Statements and Reasons to support the Plan itself, much of which is focused on the Housing Need across the Parish from 2010 out to 2030. It is truly very interesting work and we think will add value to what we are about as a community, so if you wish to more then please do link with any of the following, we will be pleased to help:

25 VILLAGE PONDWATCH APRIL 2018

Days are getting longer and a bit warmer. There have been some blue skies and sunshine as well as many clouds and rain. Pond life was sharply affected by two spells of severe cold, bringing ice and snow, in March. Plants respond slowly. Brambles are beginning to open fresh green leaves and a spray of willow wands is dressed with yellow puffs of pollen. Bright marsh marigolds stand out on the north bank and water lilies have floated new purple leaves. A pair of mallard ducks visits sometimes and a trio of goldfinches rest briefly in nearby trees. In ever increasing numbers, whirligig beetles try to run rings round each other while individuals chase their own tails and compete with pondskaters for space to skim the surface. In sunlight, the cold clear water reveals much activity below. Water beetles scoot rapidly between the weed banks and shine silvery as they rummage through detritus on the pond floor where newts patrol. Predatory diving beetles attack almost anything. One chases and captures a water boatman. A great diving beetle splashes the surface as it wrestles and subdues a small newt. Most of the frogs’ eggs and toad spawn did not survive the freeze. A few feeble tadpoles were quickly snapped up by newts and beetles. Dozens of newts cavort amidst sunny patches of weed, crested tails displaying orange stripes. Immature newts and efts keep away as adults rush at rivals or chase potential mates. Then, the pace slows as groups of two, three or four newts can be seen drifting side by side or following in gentle pirouettes until one pauses. Its tail arches forward and it shakes vigorously – often creating ripples on the water’s surface.

26 The newts are back down in the depths now, occasionally rising to the surface alone and returning to stir the silt a little. Unconcerned, a Bengal cat stalks by.

Paul Shevlin

How many people remember digging out the pond in 1999, the Fire Brigade filling it, and the formal opening of the Millennium Green by Dame Annette Penhaligon at a Cornish Tea Party in 2000?

27 28 At on Saturday 5th May from 2pm to 4pm we are holding . This is a fun family event for adults and children to enjoy together; and will be held on the first Saturday of every month.

Our uses hands-on activities and crafts to explore Bible stories, to reflect a God of creativity and to give people a chance to play and spend time together.

Our reflects a God of love and is a church for everyone, providing an oasis of welcome and a safe space in which to thrive.

Our is about hospitality, expressed most evidently by eating together – whether it’s a plate of sandwiches to share, or sausage and mash!

We are very excited that we are now able to hold in the Chacewater area and everyone is welcome.

Cheers and God Bless

31 JENNY''S GARDEN PATCH ~ MAY In May you could probably spend all your time in the garden, and there would still be more to do. This is the month when you can sow most seeds outside, and start to put out plants you’ve had in the greenhouse, and hopefully plant out any bedding plants. Of course you should keep a check on weather forecasts for any last minute frosts, and if frost is likely, cover plants with fleece. To harden off plants put them out in the sun during the day, but make sure that you take them back in at night, or protect them. Night winds and low temperatures will check the growth of plants that have been used to nice warm indoor conditions.

PLANT OF THE MONTH LAVENDER

Lavender is best planted between April and May. It thrives in poor or moderately fertile, free-draining alkaline soils in full sun. Lavenders should be pruned every year to keep them compact. On established plants use secateurs to remove flower stalks and about 2.5cm (1in) of the current year’s growth, making sure that some green growth remains. At Wisley, pruning is undertaken in late summer after flowering, although spring pruning is sometimes recommended in books. Lavender does not break readily from old wood and neglected specimens are best replaced. Lavender can be grown in large pots, 30-40cm (1ft-16in) diameter, using a multipurpose or loam-based compost such as John Innes No 3, with some extra coarse grit to improve the drainage, and some controlled release fertiliser granules. Ensure that the compost is regularly watered in summer, but kept on the dry side during winter. Most lavender can be grown in pots, but it is ideal for tender type s, such as Lavendula canariensis or L. pinnata, which need to be brought undercover during winter.

MAY IN THE GARDEN · Be ready to protect plants against sudden frosts · Water all new plantings if weather is dry · Trim spring-flowering perennials · Finish pruning spring-flowering shrubs · Tidy up foliage of spring bulbs and mark · Harden off summer bedding plants · Plant up hanging baskets and patio pots · Keep on top of pests and weeds – including slugs · Trim hedges and feed them · Keep sowing vegetables out of doors · Continue to sow tender vegetables under cover · Check greenhouse ventilation and provide shading if necessary · Continue pruning trained plums and cherries · Mulch strawberries with straw or mulch mats · Cut lawns weekly and blitz lawn weeds

I hope you all have a great month in your gardens and hopefully we will get some good weather this month. If you would like any further horticulture advice please come along to Chacewater Garden Centre and have a chat with any of the helpful and friendly staff.

33 At the AGM in March we were delighted to welcome Paul Shevlin as our new secretary. We also acknowledged that we are all grateful to Mrs. Sue Murley for her work in the past and wish her all the best when she moves away. The treasurer gave a detailed report on the various Projects. The “Music in the Park” Project is now closed as there had been no further volunteers willing to take it on and it cannot be organised by just one person. It should be noted, however, that this or a similar event could always be restarted if there is a will by a number of people to organise something. If you think this is a possibility let us know. Beautifying Chacewater continues. We have funding for one more year but may need to find more for future plans. The Seasonal Festivities continue to be successful due mainly to the number of volunteers that help in various ways. Our thanks to all of them and to Chacewater Parish Council that hosts these activities. Profits from the 2017 Seasonal festivities were moved into the Inclusive Play Project, as were some of the residue from MiP. Enabling children who may be, in some way disabled, play with their able-bodied friends is the purpose of this project. It is relatively easy to provide facilities for the disabled, but children should not be stigmatised or led to think that they cannot play with their friends. Likewise, their friends need to understand

34 that they can play with whoever and whatever equipment we can provide. It is for that reason that we are trying in partnership with Chacewater Parish Council, to provide a roundabout in the Play Area in the Recreation Ground that ALL children can play on. We will now be busily seeking donations and grants to pay for the purchase and installation of this extra special piece of play equipment. If you or your organisation can help, or if you can put us in touch will someone who can, please contact one of us. Meanwhile watch out for information of the various activities and Projects that are organised to help make the Parish of Chacewater a good place in which to live.

35 CHACEWATER PARISH COUNCIL Now meets at 7.pm on the last Friday of the month in the Killifreth Room Chacewater Village Hall starting with Public Question Time all welcome

36 Geothermal Engineering Limited (GEL) has secured funding of £10.6 million from the European Regional Development Fund to explore the geothermal resources deep beneath Cornwall. With £2.4 million from Cornwall Council and £5 million from pri- vate investors, the funding will allow GEL to drill two deep geo- thermal wells from its site within the United Downs Industrial Estate ( Parish) and build a 1MW pilot power plant to demonstrate the technical and commercial viability of supplying both electricity and heat. Well, unlike the previous Hot Dry Rock research project carried out in Cornwall in the 1980s, UDDGP plans to target a permeable geological structure called the Porthtowan Fault Zone, which lies about P.T.O.

37 800m to the west of the United Downs site. Two deep holes (wells) will be drilled into it; one for injection at about 2,500m depth and one for production at 4,500m. The temperature at the bottom of the production well is expected to be about 190 ˚C. As the diagram below shows, water will be pumped from the production well, fed through a heat exchanger and then re- injected into the ground to pick up more heat from the rocks in a continuous cycle. The extracted heat will be used to supply a demonstration power plant.

The UDDGP Project Manager, Mr Peter Ledingham, who has briefed the parishes in the area on this project provides the latest update, as follows:

38 P.T.O.

39 Education is clearly the key to every project of this nature, so GEL is currently preparing an education programme suitable for all ages from Primary School to University. Interactive sessions from Key Stage 2 to Degree Level will be offered to local schools giving children and students the opportunity to better understand the generation of heat from the earth and this heat can be utilised to produce clean, reliable and renewable energy.
