4 Charlotte P. Morris, B.S., M.Ed., Ph.D. Interim President

Dr. Charlotte P. Morris began her tenure as Tuskegee University’s current interim president on July 1, 2017. Her 30-plus-year tenure at Tuskegee has included numerous leadership and faculty appointments at the college and university levels. Her most recent appointment as interim president is her second appointment to the university’s top post — the first having been in 2010 following the retirement of President Benjamin F. Payton.

Dr. Morris began her tenure at Tuskegee University in 1984 as a faculty member of the-now Andrew F. Brimmer College of Business and Information Science. In 1987, she began serving as executive associate/chief of staff to the university president and secretary to the university’s Board of Trustees — duties she faithfully performed for 23 years. After concluding her first appointment as interim president, Dr. Morris returned to the Brimmer College, where she served as associate dean and professor of management — until appointed as the college’s interim dean in 2016 upon the retirement of Dean Tejinder Sara.

Dr. Morris’ early career experience includes teaching appointments at Trenholm State Community College and Kansas State University. Other higher education experience includes serving as program associate for planning, management and evaluation at Mississippi Valley State University. In 2011, she was appointed by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools’ Commission on Colleges as a member of its visiting peer review team.

A native of Kosciusko, Mississippi, Dr. Morris completed a bachelor’s degree in business education at , a master’s degree in business administration and management at , and a Ph.D. degree in education and business management from Kansas State University. Her research interests include leadership and the relationship between undergraduate degree majors and current jobs.

A resident of Montgomery, Alabama, since 1983, Dr. Morris is a Golden Life member of the Montgomery Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., a member and vice president of the Agnes J. 8 HonoraryFred Degree D. Gray Recipient

For more than half a century, Tuskegee-based attorney Fred D. Gray has championed and safeguarded the civil rights of others through a number of landmark Alabama legal decisions. Mr. Gray currently is senior partner in the firm of Gray, Langford, Sapp, McGowan, Gray, Gray & Nathanson P.C., based in Tuskegee. When he began practicing law in 1954, he promised himself he would work diligently to end in his native Montgomery.

Even as a young attorney, Mr. Gray immediately associated himself with what would later become milestone legal cases advancing the . Among his most well- known clients are Rosa Parks and Claudette Colvin who, in 1955, were both charged with disorderly conduct for refusing to give up their seats on a bus to white passengers. Parks’ case sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which lasted for more than a year and led to the desegregation of the bus lines.

In addition to representing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Mr. Gray argued before the Supreme Court the unconstitutionality of Tuskegee-based rezoning laws created by local officials that would have excluded African-Americans from municipal elections. In another Supreme Court case, Mr. Gray was diligent in his efforts to allow the NAACP to organize in Alabama after the group was outlawed in the state. He also was instrumental in leading cases and filing lawsuits that led to the desegregation of all state institutions of higher learning under the Alabama State Board of Education, and 104 of the then 121 elementary and secondary schools systems in the state.

Mr. Gray filed a suit on behalf of the non-consenting subjects of the “U.S. Public Health Service Tuskegee Study of Untreated Syphilis in the Negro Male,” which spanned from 1932 to 1972 and studied the progression of untreated syphilis in hundreds of African-American men living in Tuskegee and surrounding Macon County. The men were not told of the study nor given appropriate medical treatment, and thus were left untreated for decades. In 1975, Mr. Gray obtained millions of dollars and proper care from the federal government for his surviving clients. In 1997, President offered an apology on the government’s behalf and an acknowledgment of what had happened.

Out of his involvement with the syphilis study case, Mr. Gray became the principal founder of the Tuskegee Human and Civil Rights Multicultural Center, a nonprofit organization memorializing syphilis study participants. Today, the center educates the public on contributions made in the fields of human and civil rights by Native Americans and Americans of African and European descent.

Mr. Gray has authored two books about his legal experiences: Bus Ride to Justice and The .

Throughout his career and public service, he has extended opportunities for African-Americans. In 1970, as a newly elected state representative, he was one of first African-Americans to serve in the Alabama Legislature since Reconstruction. He was elected as the first African-American president of the Alabama State Bar Association and served as the 43rd president of National Bar Association.

Mr. Gray is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, the American College of Trial Lawyers, and the International Society of Barristers. He was inducted into the Alabama Academy of Honor in 2005. His numerous professional and personal accolades include recognition by the Washington Bar Association, Harvard University Law School, the American Bar Association, the Federal Bar Association, The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights, the Congressional Black Caucus, Case Western Reserve University, HOPE worldwide, and the National Conference of Bar Presidents.

Lipscomb University honored Mr. Gray with the naming of the Fred D. Gray Institute for Law Justice & Society in recognition of his commitment to civil rights and against racism. He is further recognized by the cities of Montgomery and Tuskegee with historical markers erected in his honor denoting his contributions in the fields of civil and human rights.

Mr. Gray attended Alabama State College, where he graduated in 1951, and then pursued his law degree at Case Western Reserve University. He is married to the former Carol Porter of Cleveland, Ohio. They share seven children and nine grandchildren.

TNAA provides its members with access to a vast network of professionals and offers alumni endless opportunities to connect, build relationships, and participate in and continue to learn from the incredible Tuskegee community.

Membership in the association is available to all alumni and former students of Tuskegee University, as well as their relatives and spouses, and current and former members of the university faculty and staff. 19 “The Tuskegee Song”

Tuskegee, thou pride of the swift growing South We pay thee our homage today For the worth of thy teaching, the joy of thy care; And the good we have known ’neath thy sway. Oh, long-striving mother of diligent sons And of daughters whose strength is their pride, We will love thee forever and ever shall walk Thro’ the oncoming years at thy side.

Thy Hand we have held up the difficult steeps, When painful and slow was the pace, And onward and upward we’ve labored with thee For the glory of God and our race. The fields smile to greet us, the forests are glad, The ring of the anvil and hoe Have a music as thrilling and sweet as a harp Which thou taught us to hear and to know.

Oh, mother Tuskegee, thou shinest today As a gem in the fairest of lands; Thou gavest the Heav’n-blessed power to see The worth of our minds and our hands. We thank thee, we bless thee, we pray for thee years Imploring with grateful accord, Full fruit for thy striving, time longer to strive, Sweet love and true labor’s reward.

by Paul Laurence Dunbar
