The Hollywood Cinema Industry’s Coming of Digital Age: the Digitisation of Visual Effects, 1977-1999 Volume I Rama Venkatasawmy BA (Hons) Murdoch This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of Murdoch University 2010 I declare that this thesis is my own account of my research and contains as its main content work which has not previously been submitted for a degree at any tertiary education institution. -------------------------------- Rama Venkatasawmy Abstract By 1902, Georges Méliès’s Le Voyage Dans La Lune had already articulated a pivotal function for visual effects or VFX in the cinema. It enabled the visual realisation of concepts and ideas that would otherwise have been, in practical and logistical terms, too risky, expensive or plain impossible to capture, re-present and reproduce on film according to so-called “conventional” motion-picture recording techniques and devices. Since then, VFX – in conjunction with their respective techno-visual means of re-production – have gradually become utterly indispensable to the array of practices, techniques and tools commonly used in filmmaking as such. For the Hollywood cinema industry, comprehensive VFX applications have not only motivated the expansion of commercial filmmaking praxis. They have also influenced the evolution of viewing pleasures and spectatorship experiences. Following the digitisation of their associated technologies, VFX have been responsible for multiplying the strategies of re-presentation and story-telling as well as extending the range of stories that can potentially be told on screen. By the same token, the visual standards of the Hollywood film’s production and exhibition have been growing in sophistication.

Christophe Gwynne Summary: President, Rooster Founder and Big Bird. It was during a 2003 photo-documentary trip to Bangkok that the idea of creating Rooster took seed in Chris’ mind. Impressed by the production quality of the commercials he saw in the Asian market, Chris felt he could elevate the art form by bringing in creative talent from Hollywood and letting their imagination run wild in a new environment. With over 17 years of experience in post-production, he’s worked for some of the most respected names in the industry, representing some the world’s biggest brands, in many different capacities, from technical director, to project management, to creative direction and live action director. With dual American and Swiss citizenship, Chris was born in Greece and grew up in Latin America, Europe and Japan, before moving to the New York area for high school. Chris is the quintessential “citizen of the world.” A Boston University Film School graduate with a degree in Communications concentrating in ﬁlm, photography and art history he's been a computer graphics fanatic since discovering Space Invaders in Tokyo in 1979. If he wasn’t running his own post-production design studio, he’d be shooting photos for National Geographic. Chris has been a CG Supervisor in Los Angeles since the TV series South Park in 1997 and has gone on to work on features such as Matrix Revolutions, Hellboy, Elektra, Superman Returns and Ironman as well as participate in ground breaking commercial work as a designer/animator at studios such as Imaginary Forces, Logan, Buck, Stardust, Picture Mill and Prologue Films.

INTRODUCTION In early 1996, international chess champion Garry Kasparov played a six game match with an IBM computer, named Deep Blue, specifically designed to play chess and programmed with the knowl- edge of every known chess move, game, and strategy.' Kasparov's hard-won victory was hailed as a victory for human ingenuity over ar- tificial intelligence,2 but the match itself was important for another reason: it highlighted the potential commercial value of the Internet as an entertainment medium. IBM, which sponsored the match, created an Internet site that al- lowed chess enthusiasts to follow the match move by move and to read on-the-scene expert commentary.' IBM was expecting 200,000 people to drop by, but over 6 million people signed on to view the action as it transpired.4 These are Nielsen-size numbers larger than those of many TV shows, and if IBM could have charged admission to view its Inter- . IBM ANNOUNCES FIRST ALL LINUX DIGITAL STUDIO SOLUTION Submitted by: Pleon Wednesday, 19 September 2001 IBM today announced the Linux Digital Studio Solution, IBM's first complete Linux-based solution for the media and entertainment industry. The package represents a comprehensive suite of IBM workstations, servers, storage and services all designed to support animators, special effects wizards and digital media producers as their work increasingly takes advantage of Linux. The solution would enable a studio, for example, to animate a scene on the IBM IntelliStation M Pro workstation, complete rendering on the shot with the Server xSeries, store the data on one of several IBM TotalStorage products and technologies, obtain advice, consulting and support from IBM Global Services, and secure financing for all these products and services from IBM Global Finance. All components of the solution work together and are optimised for Linux. Threshold Entertainment has plans to deploy the IBM Linux Digital Studio Solution. "Deploying Linux is an investment of resources and an act of faith and will that requires the support of a one-stop technology supplier, and we have confidence in IBM as we move in that direction," says Larry Kasanoff, chairman and CEO of Threshold Entertainment. Threshold's franchises include the "Mortal Kombat" feature films, web site, and television series.
