The Hollywood Cinema Industry’s Coming of Digital Age: the Digitisation of Visual Effects, 1977-1999 Volume I Rama Venkatasawmy BA (Hons) Murdoch This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of Murdoch University 2010 I declare that this thesis is my own account of my research and contains as its main content work which has not previously been submitted for a degree at any tertiary education institution. -------------------------------- Rama Venkatasawmy Abstract By 1902, Georges Méliès’s Le Voyage Dans La Lune had already articulated a pivotal function for visual effects or VFX in the cinema. It enabled the visual realisation of concepts and ideas that would otherwise have been, in practical and logistical terms, too risky, expensive or plain impossible to capture, re-present and reproduce on film according to so-called “conventional” motion-picture recording techniques and devices. Since then, VFX – in conjunction with their respective techno-visual means of re-production – have gradually become utterly indispensable to the array of practices, techniques and tools commonly used in filmmaking as such. For the Hollywood cinema industry, comprehensive VFX applications have not only motivated the expansion of commercial filmmaking praxis. They have also influenced the evolution of viewing pleasures and spectatorship experiences. Following the digitisation of their associated technologies, VFX have been responsible for multiplying the strategies of re-presentation and story-telling as well as extending the range of stories that can potentially be told on screen. By the same token, the visual standards of the Hollywood film’s production and exhibition have been growing in sophistication. -

Born in Malaysia, Calvin has moved to Thailand, Dubai, and now Ohio. His main focus is digital painting but also dabbles in poster creation and logo design. After graduation Calvin is planning to pursue a career as an illustrator. 3 IGNACIOS RIOS Ignacios Fernandez Rios is a digital illustrator with expertise in Photoshop, ZBrush, and 3ds Max. Rios’ skills include prop design, environment design, book cover illustration, character design, and concept art. He has done work for multiple video games including Cliver Barker’s Jericho, Castlevania Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate HD, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2. Much of his work can be seen on DeviantArt under the username Pencracker. 4 DAVID CARSON Carson is an American graphic designer, art director and surfer. He is best known for his innovative magazine design, and use of experimental typography. He was the art director for the magazine Ray Gun, in which he employed much of the typographic and layout style for which he is known. In particular, his widely imitated aesthetic defined the so-called “grunge typography” era. 5 LEN-YAN Len-Yan (Magdalena Pagowska) is a Polish artist with a masters degree in Korean studies and an English bachelors degree in multimedia with a focus in game graphics. -

Christophe Gwynne Summary: President, Rooster Founder and Big Bird. It was during a 2003 photo-documentary trip to Bangkok that the idea of creating Rooster took seed in Chris’ mind. Impressed by the production quality of the commercials he saw in the Asian market, Chris felt he could elevate the art form by bringing in creative talent from Hollywood and letting their imagination run wild in a new environment. With over 17 years of experience in post-production, he’s worked for some of the most respected names in the industry, representing some the world’s biggest brands, in many different capacities, from technical director, to project management, to creative direction and live action director. With dual American and Swiss citizenship, Chris was born in Greece and grew up in Latin America, Europe and Japan, before moving to the New York area for high school. Chris is the quintessential “citizen of the world.” A Boston University Film School graduate with a degree in Communications concentrating in film, photography and art history he's been a computer graphics fanatic since discovering Space Invaders in Tokyo in 1979. If he wasn’t running his own post-production design studio, he’d be shooting photos for National Geographic. Chris has been a CG Supervisor in Los Angeles since the TV series South Park in 1997 and has gone on to work on features such as Matrix Revolutions, Hellboy, Elektra, Superman Returns and Ironman as well as participate in ground breaking commercial work as a designer/animator at studios such as Imaginary Forces, Logan, Buck, Stardust, Picture Mill and Prologue Films. -

One part of cards are vivid and disgusting illustrations with lots of blood, guts and violence, the other are light fine fairy-like line-art (there is even a baby animal and a flower you can send even to a small child). The cards has a standard size and rounded corners. They are glued together, so you can easily look through the book and don't be afraid that it collapses in your hand.
