Page 14 3. DOHA 2010 – Overview 3.1 The World Indoors in Brief The 13th IAAF World Indoor Championships will take place at the magnificent Aspire Dome in Doha, Qatar in March 2010. As the biggest Athletics Event of the season and the second most important of the IAAF World Athletics Series, Doha 2010 Organising Committee is proud to be hosting the event, which assures significant promotion for Athletics worldwide. Many of the top stars in Athletics will take a break from hard winter training to come and compete in Doha and the city will shine from the glamour and athletic spirit of these remarkable athletes.

The numbers are impressive: 162 counties have so far sent preliminary entries and 788 athletes have been registered for the upcoming IAAF World Indoor Championships in Doha (based on 10.02.2010 data).

3.2 Mascot

Run Saham Run! Natural abilities required by a track and field athlete such as speed, power, flexibility, endurance and jumping skills along with mental char- acteristics like the sense of freedom, pride and competitiveness, are all gathered in “Saham” the official mascot of the 13th IAAF World Indoor Championships. Coming out of the vast desert of the Arabian Peninsula, Saham is a caracal, a mid-sized cat loved by the Qatari people because it is one of the few remnants of the desert heritage, now a protected species. All athletics fans will discover Saham, which means “arrow” in Arabic and the values he represents throughout the three days of action at the Aspire Dome. After Berlino’s huge success in last year’s IAAF World Championships the bar has been raised, but Saham is ready to set a new World Record of the Championships. 360 Degree 3.3 Medals

Energy and Passion Medals have historically been given as prizes in various types of competi- tive activities, especially Athletics. The medal is the greatest recognition for an athlete, and sports competition history has plenty of moving medal moments to remember. At the same time, it is an opportunity for the host city to honor the winning athletes by depicting a piece of local civilisation on the medal. The Doha 2010 Organising Committee offers this piece of art to everyone who will find the way to the podium. On the front side the Aspire Tower, an icon of Doha and one of the most recognisable sporting landmarks in the Middle East, is etched along with a runner (official brand mark) and symbolises the energy, passion, determination and spirit of all athletes. On the back, three action figures outline what athletics is all about: running, jumping and throwing.

There will be a head-on platform facing the finish line, while the access to all platforms will be on a first come first served basis. Only a limited number of photographers will have access to the track and will be identified by a red bib. The remaining photographers will work outside the track and will wear a black bib.

Press Conference Room The Press Conference Room is located at the end of the Mixed Zone. Seating up to 50 people, it will host all medallists’ interviews, as well as related Press Conferences.

Page 32 14. 2010 RULE CHANGES

The IAAF issued a number of rules changes for the current indoor and outdoor athletics season. The following two are the most visible changes for athletics fans.

Rule 162.7 (No False Start Rule) The new rule requires that any athlete making a false start be disqualified (No False Start). For combined events the new rule allows one false start and then the disqualification of any athlete breaking subsequently. The false start rule applies to all starts from 60m to 3000m. This means a 1500m or a 3000m athlete who does not remain still after taking up his start position after the command “on your marks” will be disqualified.

Rule 181.8 (Ties in HJ and PV) The new rule makes provision for letting the tie stand or for resolving it as before. It can be decided in advance not to resolve a tie or during the competition. The Technical Delegate or Referee can make the decision. Athletes can decide not to jump any further in which case the tie remains.

The newly formed partnership between Qatar Exchange and the NYSE’s Euronext -20% share ($200 mil- lion) represents the largest investment in a foreign exchange.

Page 38 Home to the third-largest natural gas reserves in the world, in 1997 the country became the biggest LNG producer in the world with 31 million tons. In 2010, the total production will reach 77 million tons. Qatar is constructing the largest European LNG terminal in Wales and the first floating terminal in the world, located in Italy.

Qatar is managing its resources, using oil and gas revenues to implement comprehensive reforms that help transform Qatar’s economy from one that depends largely on oil and gas exports to a diversified economy that depends on knowledge and focuses on high-tech industrial activities and services. Despite the global financial challenges Qatar’s real estate growth shows little sign of slowing down as most projects in both the public and the private sector are going ahead as planned. The new real estate and urban developments revive heritage and embrace modernity: the redevelopment of the center of Doha will involve the construction of 750,000 m² of mixed-use space that combines ancient culture with modern technology. The Pearl-Qatar, a multi-billion dollar 4 million square meter reclaimed island, by 2013 will provide upscale housing and amenities for more than 41,000 people, creating 32 km of new coastline. It is the first urban development in Qatar to allow international free- hold ownership. Another new district, Lusail, will accommodate 200,000 people on over 35km². It will include an Entertainment district and Energy city.

The country is constantly adapting its infrastructures to new challenges: plans are underway to build a metro rail network to complement the transport infrastructure covering over 140 km when completed, in 5 years. Qatar is also on track to open its new airport with a capacity for 24 million passengers and cargo of 1.4 million tons a year. This corresponds to the demand for additional international pas- sengers’ capacity and will allow Doha to service two A380-800 super jumbos at the same time and 48,000 m² of cargo terminals.

The Qatar-Bahrain Bridge, also called the “Friendship Bridge” is planned to be 40 km long and will become the longest bridge in the world.

Page 44 19. FAQ – DOs & DONTs PLEASE DO…

Use greetings and formalities as they are particularly important when dealing with local people. It is considered impolite to start any conversation or request without saying “Good Morning” or “Good Afternoon”.

Dress modestly in Qatar, which is a Muslim country with conservative dress codes. Loose trousers are acceptable for women, but avoid shorts and short skirts, strappy low-cut tops, see-through and transparent clothes.

Hail Mowasalat turquoise taxis, which are safe, clean and metered. The majority of drivers speak Eng- lish. When ordering a taxi by phone do so well in advance as delays can occur.

Bargain with shopkeepers is the norm in the souqs, so let go of your inhibitions and allow yourself some extra time for a good barter. Always counter the original offer with a lower price than you expect to pay and work slowly upwards to what you wish to spend.

Watch out for separate counters and sections for women in banks and utilities.

Enjoy Qatar at night as it is one of the safest places in the world and during the hot summer and Ramadan you will see people around town well into the early morning.

Drink plenty of water in addition to other beverages.

Use a high-factor sun block on all exposed skin (even in the winter sun), including the tops of your feet if wearing sandals. Children and fair-skinned people also need a hat or cap.

Remember the air-conditioning, which can chill you to bone at the restaurants, cinemas and malls. Take along a light jacket or sweater as a precaution.

Page 45 IAAF World Indoor Championships - Doha 2010

PLEASE DON’T…

Look or stare at people closely no matter how fascinating their dress! This general courtesy is particu- larly important in a society where modesty of dress and behavior is mandatory.

Ask an Arab lady for information or directions if you are a man. Respect the fact that some Arabic ladies are very private people in public places. They will be more than willing to help other females and if you are a family let your wife do the talking!

Be offended if your handshake is refused by a Muslim. Handshakes are most often refused to mem- bers of the opposite sex. It is not meant personally, but simply a religious prohibition applicable to Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

Take a photograph without permission of either people (including the police or armed forces) or sen- sitive sites. Arab women and many older people strongly object to being photographed.

Be annoyed if your guest / contact is late – just remember time is more elastic in Qatar.

Use your left hand for eating with your fingers. Following Muslims conventions the right hand is con- sidered more propitious and the left hand is reserved for personal hygiene.

Sit with the soles of your shoes or feet pointing to your Qatari hosts. It is considered insulting. Equally, don’t sit with your back to other guests.

Drink too much that your behavior is affected in public. Alcohol in Qatar is a strictly regulated conces- sion and there is zero tolerance for drink-driving or rowdy behavior.

Go barefoot in the sea where stonefish (which look like stones) lie along the shoreline. Although rare, the poisonous defense mechanism causes excruciating pain and needs a hospital visit. Also be on the lookout for jellyfish.
