This study which assessed urban solid waste management in Ebonyi state with focus on Abakaliki urban specifically sought to find out why indiscriminate solid waste disposal/dumps has persisted in Abakaliki urban, investigate the measures put in place to curtail the tide and ascertain the extent to which indiscriminate waste disposal affects people’s health and environment. Four null hypotheses were formulated and Human Capital Theory was adopted as the theoretical framework. The study used survey design whereby data were collected from the sample considered to be representative of the population. Taro Yameni’s formula was applied to reduce the initial population of 116,987 to a smaller researchable size of 399 while data were collected through structured questionnaire. The data collected were presented in tables containing frequencies of the responses and their corresponding percentages. The four hypotheses of the study were tested using chi-square (X2) statistical tool and the result of the analyses revealed that: there is currently no government approved dumpsites in Abakaliki metropolis, most communicable diseases are contracted from dirty environment, among others. -

Socio-Economic Factors Influencing Poverty Among Rural Households in Onicha Local Government Area, Ebonyi State, Nigeria

Eze1*, N.E. Odoh2, O.E. Igwe2 and C.J. Mgbanya3 Received 8 March 2019, Revised 18 May 2019, Accepted 24 June 2019, Published online 30 June 2019 Abstract The study examined the socio-economic factors influencing poverty among rural households in Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi state, Nigeria. The study adopted multistage random and purposive sampling techniques to select 120 household heads. Primary data used for the study were collected using structured questionnaire. The data were analysed with the aid of means, percentage and frequency count and OLS multiple regression model. The result indicated that the households spent an average of N31,250 monthly to take care of their families and other essential personal needs. The result of the socio-economic characteristics showed that majority (53.3) of the respondents were females. The mean age was 36 years with majority (64.2%) married while an average of 6 persons per household was recorded. The predominant occupations were farming (36.0%) and civil service (35.8%). The households cultivated a mean farm size of 3.8 hectares, the mean monthly income was N19,720 while their average monthly expenditure amounted to N31,250. Moreover, 73.3% of the respondents belonged to one social organization or the other with over 90.0% of them having acquired various forms of formal education. -

This study was aimed at assessing the prevalence of Paragonimus infection in Ebonyi State. Deep sputum samples from 3600 individuals and stool samples from 900 individuals in nine Local Government Areas in Ebonyi State, Nigeria were examined for Paragonimus ova using concentration technique. The overall prevalence of pulmonary Paragonimus infection in the area was 16.30%. Six foci of the infection were identified in Ebonyi North and Ebonyi Central but none in Ebonyi South. The intensity of the infection was generally moderate. Of the 720 individuals examined, 16 (12.12%) had less than 40 ova of Paragonimus in 5 mL sputum and 114 (86.36%) had between 40 and 79 ova of Paragonimus in 5 mL sputum. -

COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF CRAYFISH MARKETING IN SELECTED MARKETS OF AKWA IBOM AND ABIA STATES, NIGERIA Simonyan, J.B Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Department of Agricultural Economics PMB 7267, Umudike Abia State, Nigeria. E mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT The study was on comparative analysis of crayfish marketing in some selected markets of Akwa Ibom and Abia states of Nigeria. It specifically looked at market integration, costs and return, marketing margin, marketing efficiency and factors influencing marketing efficiency in both states. Data were collected from 60 respondents (30 from each state). Data analyses were carried out with the use of such statistical tools like bivirate analysis, efficiency ratio, marketing margin and regression analysis. The results show that selling and purchasing prices had weak correlation between the markets in Akwa Ibom and Abia states, implying low level of market integration. Costs and return analysis showed a net return of N 16, 816.42 and N 35, 734, 50 for Akwa Ibom and Abia states respectively. This implies that crayfish marketing is more profitable in Abia state. Marketing margin in Akwa Ibom and Abia state was 9.58 and 15.01 respectively, while the marketing efficiency was 8.29 and 13.31 respectively in the states. The results call for policies aimed at provision of infrastructural facilities to reduce transportation cost and marketers encouraged to increase the level of crayfish marketing because it is lucrative, thereby meeting up with the increasing demand for protein. Abstract The conditions of the watersheds of Ebonyi State has become a concern for individuals, communities, governments, donor agencies and private and public businesses as everybody depends on its resources. A study was therefore conducted within 2011 to 2012, to identify the dimensions and level of environmental degradation at the watershed sites with a view to developing management strategies for them. The study involved global positioning, reconnaissance survey and evaluation. The assessments of the sites identified were based on technical judgments, using the environmental baseline data collection and secondary information methods. A total of 39 degraded watersheds were identified, and which environmental assessment was carried out on. The results indicated that erosion, siltation and deforestation were the major environmental degradations, and cutting across almost the entire watersheds. Previous restoration measures were reviewed and recommendations for future conservation strategies were highlighted. Introduction A Watershed is a land area whose runoff drains into any stream, river, lake, and ocean. Other terms used for watershed include catchment or drainage basin . The watersheds consist of land, water and the shed; the vegetative canopy that assists in maintenance of the dynamic equilibrium in the watershed ecosystem. Watersheds are uniquely multifunctional and capable of simultaneously producing agricultural commodities and generating ecosystem services. -
The Significance of the Immunity Clause for Democratic Consolidation in Nigeria
African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies: AJCJS, Vol.6, #s1 &2 November 2012 ISSN 1554-3897 THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE IMMUNITY CLAUSE FOR DEMOCRATIC CONSOLIDATION IN NIGERIA Olaoye, Ebenezer Olugbenga (Ph.D.), Department of Political Science, Ekiti State University, Nigeria Abstract This paper interrogates the relevance of the constitutional provisions on immunity for certain categories of elected political-office holders to the quest for democratic consolidation in Nigeria. It traces the history of immunity for political office-holders to the 1963 Republican Constitution and examines the rationale or justification for its inclusion in Nigerian constitutions. On the strength of evidences from case studies from Nigeria’s Second (1979 to 1983) and Fourth Republic (1999 till present), the paper notes that, while the original intention for its inclusion in the Nigerian constitution was good, politicians have used the clause to the detriment of democracy. For this reason, the constitutional provisions on immunity have become a threat to the consolidation of Nigeria’s nascent democracy. Rather than throw away the baby with the birth-water, the paper recommends a review of the provisions to take cognizance of the need for transparency, accountability and good governance while ensuring that political chief executives are not unduly constrained in the performance of their constitutional duties. In this way, the paper concludes, the excesses of elected political chief executives can be curbed while Nigerians can reasonably expect to reap more dividends of democracy now and in the future. Introduction: The Concept of Immunity The concept of ‘immunity’ originated from a Latin word ‘immunitas’ which the ancient Romans used in describing the exemption of an individual from service or duty to the State (Silverstein, 1999:19).
