Ibrahim 1Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Umaru Musa Yar’aduwa University, Katsina. 2Department of mathematics Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto Nigeria [*Corresponding Author: [email protected]] ABSTRACT: In this paper, data of infectious diseases were collected from the two senatorial zones of Katsina state, and analyzed using cluster analysis, a multivariate technique. This necessitated a partition of the set of diseases into groups such that the diseases with similar degree of prevalence were identified. The result of the cluster formation shows that Malaria is more prevalent in all of the two zones, followed by Cholera and Typhoid fever using the Single Linkage and Centroid methods. The Complete Linkage and Ward methods showed that Malaria is the most prevalent followed by Typhoid fever and Cholera in Katsina zone, while in Daura zone Typhoid fever is more prevalent followed by Malaria and Cholera. The number of clusters tends to vary from one zone to another. This is achieved by using Chi-square test for independence. The study concludes that the use of clustering methods provides a suitable tool for assessing the level of infections of the disease. Keywords: Cluster analysis, Infectious diseases, Malaria, Cholera and Typhoid INTRODUCTION important is that it is caused by living One of the most challenging tasks to public health microorganisms which can usually be identified, in Nigeria and Africa in general, is the control of thus establishing the aetiology early in the illness.

  • Informal Microfinance and Economic Activities of Rural Dwellers in Kwara South Senatorial District of Nigeria
International Journal of Business and Social Science Vol. 2 No. 15; August 2011 INFORMAL MICROFINANCE AND ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES OF RURAL DWELLERS IN KWARA SOUTH SENATORIAL DISTRICT OF NIGERIA IJAIYA, Muftau Adeniyi Department of Accounting and Finance University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria E-mail : [email protected], Phone: +2348036973561 Abstract Rural areas, like urban areas have increasing demand for credit because such credit reduces the impact of seasonality on incomes. However, formal financial institutions have maintained low presence in the rural areas. This has affected the rural dwellers’ access to deposit savings and credits that can improve their economic activities. This study examined the influence of informal microfinance on economic activities of rural dwellers in the selected rural areas of Kwara South Senatorial District. Using a multiple regression analysis, six hundred (600) questionnaire was administered on members of informal microfinance institution in the study area, the study found that fund provided as credit facilities for transaction purposes, funds for housing and combating diseases have significant influence on the economic activities of the rural areas. The study recommends group savings and group lending in order to increase savings and credits to the rural dwellers. Government should also provide improved infrastructural facilities that would enable rural dwellers have more access to their economic activities Key Words: Microfinance, Informal, Economic Activities, Rural, Kwara 1.0 Introduction Africa‟s development challenges go deeper than low income, falling trade shares, low savings and slow growth. They also include inequality and uneven access to productive resources, social exclusion and insecurity especially among the women (Pitamber, 2003). However, more specific concern is raised in Nigeria due to rural-urban disparities in income distribution, access to education and health care services, and prevalence of ethnic or cross-boundary conflicts.

  • An Assessment of Operation Rainbow As a Mechanism for Peace- Building in Plateau State, Nigeria
www.ijird.com February, 2017 Vol 6 Issue 2 ISSN 2278 – 0211 (Online) An Assessment of Operation Rainbow as a Mechanism for Peace- building in Plateau State, Nigeria Ndako Salihu Haruna Research Fellow, Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution Abuja, Nigeria Gowal Beji Bekuma Research Fellow, Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution Abuja, Nigeria Andrew Bogoro Elias Research Fellow , Institute for Peace and Conflict Abuja, Nigeria Abstract: The study assessed Operation Rainbow as a mechanism for Peace- building in Plateau State. Operation Rainbow was created by Plateau State Government which includes civilians to address the perceived harassment by the Federal Government Joint Security Task Force in Plateau State to coil the lingering crises that engulfed the State most especially Jos North and Jos South Local Government Areas. The result shows that resource rivalry, power politics are factors that promote conflict in Plateau state as people struggle for power; there is collaboration between the Operation Rainbow and other security agencies to tackle the crises which leads to significant Peace-building. This study concludes that the lack of sincere conflict resolution efforts in Jos resulted in the transformation of a once-localized confrontation between political elites of different ethnic groups into a protracted communal conflict with a strong religious dimension. The study recommended that there is need to address Constitutional Reforms to political structure in the country. 1. Introduction Plateau state widely known as the home of peace and tourism is uniquely located in the north central geo-political zone of Nigeria. It was created in 1976 and has Jos as its capital.

The period between 2004 and 2006 has recorded a ruinous prebendal political conflict in the South-Eastern geo-political zone of Nigeria. The conflict, which involved an erstwhile Governor of Anambra State, Dr. Chris Ngige and a political chieftain in the state, Chief Chris Uba, occurred with attendant violence. However, empirical studies on the role played by the press in this type of conflict situation are faint in political communication literature. This study therefore was conducted to investigate how selected newspapers reported the Ngige and Uba prebendal political conflict in South-Eastern Nigeria between 2004 and 2006. Four Nigerian national newspapers were chosen for the study, namely: Daily Champion, Daily Trust, Nigerian Tribune and The Guardian. Purposive sampling was used to select 84 journalistic genres out of 72 editions of the newspapers.

S. and Ogunjemite, B. G. Department of Ecotourism and Wildlife Management, Federal University of Technology, Akure. Corresponding Author email: [email protected] ABSTRACT The distribution of large mammals in Idanre Forest Reserve was assessed using the line transect method with a total number of five (5) transect lines and employing the use of Global Positioning System (GPS) to take the different points and location of different species of large mammals both sighted directly and indirectly. It was observed that transect C and D (within the undisturbed forest) 45 and 38 sightings respectively which were evenly distributed within this transects. It was also observed that transect C had 30.41 % the highest rate occurrence in terms of distribution of signs of large mammals. The study also revealed that in terms of vegetation cover preference, all of the large mammals were distributed with the undisturbed forest habitat while the Cephalophus silvicultor were not distributed within the disturbed forest and the farm land .Also, all the primates were available within all the habitat types with the exception of Cercocerbus torquatus which is not distributed within the Cercocebus torquatus farmland. The research revealed that there are still some significant amounts of large mammals within the reserve and if well conserved in terms of enforcement of strict adherence to forest laws, there will be an increase in terms of the distribution within their natural habitat and reduced dispersal outside their natural place of abode.
