This study which assessed urban solid waste management in Ebonyi state with focus on Abakaliki urban specifically sought to find out why indiscriminate solid waste disposal/dumps has persisted in Abakaliki urban, investigate the measures put in place to curtail the tide and ascertain the extent to which indiscriminate waste disposal affects people’s health and environment. Four null hypotheses were formulated and Human Capital Theory was adopted as the theoretical framework. The study used survey design whereby data were collected from the sample considered to be representative of the population. Taro Yameni’s formula was applied to reduce the initial population of 116,987 to a smaller researchable size of 399 while data were collected through structured questionnaire. The data collected were presented in tables containing frequencies of the responses and their corresponding percentages. The four hypotheses of the study were tested using chi-square (X2) statistical tool and the result of the analyses revealed that: there is currently no government approved dumpsites in Abakaliki metropolis, most communicable diseases are contracted from dirty environment, among others.

  • GLOBAL SOLAR RADIATION MEASUREMENT in ABAKALIKI EBONYI STATE NIGERIA USING LOCALLY MADE PYRANOMETER Nwankwo S.N and Nnabuchi
International Journal of Energy and Environmental Research Vol.3, No.2, pp.47-54, September 2015 ___Published by European Centre for Research Training and Development UK (www.eajournals.org) GLOBAL SOLAR RADIATION MEASUREMENT IN ABAKALIKI EBONYI STATE NIGERIA USING LOCALLY MADE PYRANOMETER Nwankwo S.N and Nnabuchi M.N Department of Industrial Physics, Ebonyi State University, PMB 053 Abakaliki, Nigeria ABSTRACT: This research work focused on the variability of global solar radiation over the area of Abakaliki, Ebonyi State (6o20’N, 8o06’E) located in South Eastern part of Nigeria for the rainy and dry seasons. The Pyranometer used for this measurement was locally developed and calibrated against a standard pyranometer, it competed favorably with the standard Einstrain Lungs Sensor. The global solar radiation was measured every five minutes from 08:00hours to 18:00hours during the dry season 2011 and rainy season in 2012. The measurements were carried out near the New Physics Laboratory Complex Ebonyi State University Abakaliki, Nigeria. Maximum Irradiances of 1095.10Wm-2 and 689.48Wm-2 recorded in Abakaliki during dry and rainy seasons respectively occurred between 12:00 – 14:00hours local time, whereas the minimum values of 9.20Wm-2 and 9.86Wm-2 respectively are recorded during the sunrise and sunset. Partly cloudy conditions in Abakaliki cause conspicuous oscillations in global solar radiation. This can be attributed to multiple reflections by nearby cloudy layers. The seasonal difference in the observed global solar radiation was 405.62Wm-2. Therefore solar energy devices can operate continuously in Abakaliki for up to 10 hours in a solar day from 8:00hours to 18:00hours which was the period covered during this investigation.

EBONYI STATE Geopolitical Background: Ebonyi State is an inland south-eastern state of Nigeria, populated primarily by Igbos. Its capital and largest city is Abakaliki. Afikpo is the second largest city. Other major towns are Onueke, Nkalagu, Uburu, Onicha, Ishiagu, Amasiri and Okposi. It is one of the six new states in Nigeria created in 1996; Ebonyi was created from the of old Abakaliki division of Enugu State and old Afikpo division of Abia State. The state which is situated in the South-eastern part of the country shares boundaries with Benue to the north, Enugu to the northwest, Abia to the south-east and Cross River to the east. The Federal Military Government created Ebonyi State out of former Abia and Enugu states on October 1st 1997. Ebonyi state has an area of 5,530km2 with over 4.5 million people. Economy: Agriculture is the major occupation of the people of the state. The crops produced are yam, cassava, plantain, banana, maize, and cocoyam. Others are palm produce, cocoa and rubber. It is a leading producer of rice, yams, potatoes, maize, beans and cassava. Rice and Yams are predominantly cultivated in EDDA. Ebonyi also has several solid mineral resources, but little large-scale commercial mining. The state government has however given several incentives to investors in the agro-allied sector. Ebonyi is called "the salt of the nation" for its huge salt deposit at the Okposi and Uburu Salt Lakes. Mineral resources in the state include salt which is mined locally in the Uburu/Okposi salt lakes of Ohaozara.
